Bethesda’s ‘Brink’ FPS debuts at No1 for 360/PS3/PC. Developed in the UK by London-based ‘Splash Damage’, this is the developer widely known for the online-only ‘Wolfenstein: Enemy Territory’ (released in 2003) and in terms of physical product ‘Enemy Territory: Quake Wars’, originally released on PC and debuted at No1 in the UK PC Full Price Chart back in week 39, 2007.

Also new this week and debuting at No2 is Disney Interactive Studios’ multi-format ‘Lego Pirates of the Caribbean’. This is a good week for UK development as this title was created by Traveller’s Tales, based in the North-West of England. ‘Zumba Fitness’ from 505 Games is pushed down from No1 to No3 (-2%) and EA’s ‘Portal 2’ dips 2 places to No4 (-42%). Activision Blizzard’s ‘Call of Duty: Black Ops’ drops one place to No5 (-19%) followed at No6 by Warner Bros. Interactive and ‘Mortal Kombat’ (-39%) down 3 places from No3. The only other new entry is THQ’s ‘MX vs ATV Alive’ for 360/PS3 (developed by THQ Digital Studios Phoenix, USA) and debuts at No10: two-thirds of the sales are for the Xbox 360 version.

Gamers are ready to swallow anything with guns apparently. Seriously, it would be nice to see an FPS bomb once in a while.

Proof that AAA+++ titles like Lego games will sell even on the 3DS.

Really?

It's not like Brink is your typical FPS game. It has an uncommon visual look, far more customisation than other FPS games and is in general a very fun team based shooter.

Brink is surely an imaginative game, but plenty of noFPS imaginative games bombed, and I'm confident its nature basically gave it a free pass.

Just to be clear about it, Brink prospers and this game http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SWGfXaXlzoI&feature=related bombs, and it makes no fucking sense, sorry.

Of all the videos you could have linked after that (perfectly valid) rant, you choose a Third Person Shooter?

There's a competitive shooter drought atm. Honestly Gears 3 would've made a killing if it was released now.

Comparing an online shooter with a singleplayer TPS? Really?

Well it's not really gamers, but parents. Lego has a legacy of goodwill built of being something educational for children while being fun. It's not surprising they put the same trust in the games as well.

Packing the very accessible and very slick games full of unlockables and giving them all drop-in/drop-out co-op really helps as well. They're well made games, even if they're getting a little 'cut & paste' lately. I know more than a few adults that are partial to the series, especially those with kids.

As much as i love Vanquish it's not a game for everyone, same as Bayonetta.

And it doesn't have MP.

Genuinely surprised by Brink's strong start in a few countries, thought it would bomb for sure with PSN down, the poor reviews, and the (relatively) unknown dev. Lego keeps marching on...

Is this the first Lego game where Wii isn't the leading platform? Or did I imagine they were always stronger there?

And Wii Fit will never stop selling in France, I wonder what's its LTD there.

Gaurdian has splits of stuffs. Brink has more PS3 sales then you would think and apparently LEGO Pirates didn't come out on 3DS? Or its part of the unaccounted for 6% (isn't there a PC version too).

As for brink and poor reviews. Wasn't home front even worse. I wonder when this FPS of the week at number 1 club will end in the UK.

Killzone 3 shot up in the UK. From 39th to 24th. Wonder why.

Red Dead 360 also shot way up.

Price drop in Euroland. Bought a copy yesterday (because they were out of Crysis 2 :( )

Seems not! I think that used to be the case but not this year.

Lego Star Wars 3: 360 followed by PS3
http://www.chart-track.co.uk/index....p&ct=110032&arch=t&lyr=2011&year=2011&week=12

DS Star Wars didn't do so well but for some reason PotC DS outsold Wii and 3DS.

Looking at Clone Wars, the 360 version has been top in all but one weeks. Probably not much in it though.

The Wii versions don't always open strongest, but they tend to stick around longer. (This happened to Lego Harry Potter last year.) Lego Star Wars III behaved a bit erratically though which suggests intermittent shortages.

Wii version went:
14 -> 14 -> 13 -> 14 -> 31 -> OFF -> 34 -> 32

360 version went:
4 -> 6 -> 11 -> 16 -> 16 -> 18 -> 26 -> 30

It looks like the Wii game sold very consistently the first four weeks, then got hit by shortages that weren't alleviated until week 7 at which point people may not have cared anymore. We'll see what happens in the upcoming weeks now that Lego Pirates is out. In either case, the trajectories support the notion that the Wii versions generally have legs.

Homefront is a much worse game yet got better scores.

I don't think anyone ever went as far to say "I'm not reviewing the console version of Homefront because it's a broken unplayable PoS" like they did for Brink. Brink is probably a better game, when it actually works.

SmokyDave said:
Of all the videos you could have linked after that (perfectly valid) rant, you choose a Third Person Shooter?

Are third person shooters nearly as successfull as FPSes?

My personal qualm is with FPS specifically. I would never design one. I LOATHE them, because there's no genre that limits immagination as much. The idea itself of a first-person experience is limiting creativity - no wonder they all look and control the same.
Yet they are successfull exactly because they're so immediate, and apparently people can't wait to play the same game over and over and over again.

Vanquish was a game in a semi-popular genre that tried doing something more than the simpliest thing possible, and failed, and I'm confident it suffered from terrible word of mouth because for the kind of (average) gamer that feels satisfaction from playing KZ3 and Homefront back to back between his CoD sessions, it was simply too complex.

FPSs are dumb, and they're dumbing down the gaming audience. I know, personal opinion and probably it's gonna enrage all those hardcore gamers who can appreciate excellent games and FPSs (and excellent FPS games, which, to my discomfort, actually exist). My rant is simply about the sadness of seeing a genre prosper because of its own conservative and minimalist nature.

The thing is, Brink is one of the more different FPS out there, especially in terms of mobility and its overall aesthetic. Your criticism of the genre doesn't really hold up in this case.

Don't worry, LA Noir which is basically an adventure game will be topping the charts fairly soon
