Rise of the Tomb Raider Crystal Dynamics FAQ - Confirms timed exclusive for XB1/360

What does exclusive to Xbox mean?
It means that Rise of the Tomb Raider is coming Holiday 2015 exclusively on Xbox One and Xbox 360.

Does the exclusive to Xbox have a duration? Is it timed? How long is the duration? Can we expect a PlayStation 4 or PC release in the future?
Yes, our deal with Microsoft has a duration. We aren’t discussing details of the deal, and are focused on delivering a great game on Xbox One and Xbox 360.

Did Crystal Dynamics know about this deal?
Yes, Crystal Dynamics is excited to be partnering with Microsoft to make the best game possible. As Darrell mentioned in his message, we have a long history with Microsoft and they have been a very strong supporter of the franchise. They will help us grow and nurture the Tomb Raider franchise more than ever before.

Were the fans considered when making this decision? Are Crystal Dynamics and Square Enix aware of the franchise history with PlayStation and on PC?
Of course. We did not make this decision lightly. Our goal is to build the best game that we possibly can, and our relationship with Microsoft will help us realize our vision for the game.

Why didn’t Microsoft, Square Enix or Crystal Dynamics say upfront it was a timed exclusive? Why all the indirect language?
We certainly didn’t intend to cause any confusion with the announcement. The Microsoft Gamescom stage was a great place to make the initial announcement, but not necessarily to go into details

That last answer is funny.

"Timed" is hardly such a complex detail, hm?

How they live their lives if they think "timed" is complex, fuck me lol :p

While the whole "relationship with Microsoft" angle is fluffy bullshit its nice they made this little breakdown. Should have been up day 1.

it's still PR fluff and waffle though....

I love the fan loyalty response.

"Yes, we are well aware that well over half of our fanbase comes from PlayStation and PC. We look forward to releasing it on Xbox."

Microsoft had to have payed more than the projected sales from PS3/4 and PC for this deal to be worth it. Must have been a hefty sum.

What a load of crap. Twice as many people bought this game on PS4 as on XB1. IF the fans were considered, this deal wouldn't have happened. They should just be honest and say it was the money.

I'm not angry. I own XB1 and they have a right to go for profit, but don't lie to me.

BS. What they looked at is the bottom line - they think they can make more money doing it this way. Public companies don't care about fans, they care about Quarters.

Good to know.

Welp, glad to have that cleared up. *waits patiently for Steam release*

Man, it's almost as if they could have simply said "Coming FIRST to Xbox One and Xbox 360"

It's really not that hard.

are you concerned about a pc release?

No concern. I have an Xbox One and a PS4. I'll just grab it on Xbox. But depending on what I'm playing at the time, it might be worth waiting for a complete edition on PS4. Even if it's a year because it will most likely be cheaper too.

Pie and Beans

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
Making an Xbox 360 version for the very end of 2015 is absolutely ridiculous. Making one while also signing a "wont appear on market leading platform until is old news" deal makes it even insaner.

Specifics of the deal involve us using shady, unclear and purposefully obfuscating language, but we can't tell you that because the deal prevents us from going into specifics.

Nothing we didn't know. Am I right guys? Timed exclusive yes and release on unknown platform after the duration. But one would assume it will come to PS3 and 4. Unless it sells crazy numbers and Microsoft sees potential and plans to buy off the franchise. But chances for that are slim to none.

Wait, this game is cross-gen?

Yeah. I remember Amazon listings just after E3 also mentioning PS3 and 360 releases. Although that was likely an assumption.

I do wonder if PS3 will get it when it releases on PS/PC in 2016. I think it'll be a GotY edition on PS4/PC/XB1/360 only occurrence.

That is an absolute load full of BS and they know it.

I pretty curious how much MS spent on this. It just seems like a waste of money to me.
I just get the gut feeling that they paid pretty close to what they pay Activision for timed exclusive DLC. I just don't feel that Microsoft went extra bonkers with the money for this one.

The last answer is a cop out. Sony had no problem distinguishing what was coming "First to Playstation," i.e. a timed exclusive on stage. They made it very clear to me. I don't understand why Microsoft, Square, and CD could not do the same.
