Nintendo Direct Feb 13, 2014 Thread | 3DS/Wii U Spring games

Right, but there's no excuse for it. The XBox 360 came out in 2005. Developers were complaining about HD development all the way back then. Meanwhile, Nintendo sat on Scrooge McDuck levels of cash while releasing nothing for the Wii's last two years.

They've had catastrophically bad leadership, and it didn't have to end up this way.

They are also just now realizing how useful it would have been if there was more computability between Wii U and 3DS (like a shared OS).

That was atrocious.

I got a Wii U bundle last week and set it up over the weekend. My GF and I looked through the entire catalog in the eShop for stuff to play together. She literally said: where are all the games? I said something about stuff coming later. Her response: why did you buy this if there's nothing to play? She's right. Why did I think anything would be different this time?

Mario Kart is Mario Kart; you expect one every gen like clockwork with no real surprises and it's not even coming soon. X looks like every other dull bargain bin RPG I avoid and won't see a release this year if I even cared. Super Smash Bros is almost certainly not coming out til the holidays and this long string of gameplay teases, in place of an actual game or at least a decent release date(!), is not cool. Bayonetta looks pretty good but has niche appeal at best and, again, won't be out anytime soon. Donkey Kong looks genuinely great, but it stands truly alone in this ridiculous drought. It's not enough.

I just got this thing and I'm disappointed in the little available and the paltry offerings on the way. How has anyone who has had it since launch or for months now been managing? I would lose my mind if not for my PC and Steam account.

Is this for real? There is a shortage of games on Wii U, but there is tons of stuff to play with couch coop. That's just silly. You looked through the catalog for stuff to play together and couldn't find something? Not even possible, especially if you just got your system. Nintendo Land by itself is enough to hold local multiplayer parties many times. Why don't you try Spin the Bottle, instead.

There is a lack of software, overall, for Wii U. But don't start your post with that kind of nonsense.

I agree that Nintendo was lazy and there arent enough games for the console but what they showed was all great and looked like it would be a ton of fun.

But its always the same...after a direct the thread is flooded by the haters, screaming around how bad everything was because Nintendo didnt showed the new Zelda, new Miyamoto IP, F Zero, Star Fox, etc bla bla.

The one thing that really bothers me is that Iwata lied again and the Wii U still hasent enough games or is getting them. :/ March and April is besides from NES remix...empty.

It looks like Nintendo will repeat the same mistake in 2014 like last year for the Wii U: Most their software offerings will occur in the second half of the year. They really need to spread the games more evenly to sustain some inkling of momentum. It's amazing that if Tropical Freeze didn't get delayed, there would have been no major title until the end of May with Mario Kart 8.

But still, that's only 2 major releases in the first half. It's pitiful. NES Remix 2 is nice, but that's not huge or anything. Honestly, these next couple months would have been a great time to release some HD remake, since Wind Waker was a success.

At least the 3DS keeps delivering.

just watched it... you guys never learn, do you? lol

I guess there's a new influx of juniors between every nintendo direct. it's always someones first... gotta learn the hard way.

not sure what everyone expected out of this. Footage of Mario Kart, Bayo 2 and X left me happy.

If I had to take one thing away from this Direct, it was the fact that Mario Kart 8 will be coming out on May fucking 30th.

Donkey Kong - February 21
Mario Kart 8 - May 30

That is a 3+ month gap of NOTHING. Unreal. And no, NES Remix 2 and GBA VC games aren't going to do shit and you know it.

Woke up early to watch the direct, wish I hadn't bothered. Looked like they threw most of it together earlier this week. GBA VC will be ok if they can actually release titles in a prompt and timely manner but I'm not optimistic after the Wii U VC efforts.

You spent $300 without knowing what games are on the system? I'm not buying it.

You answered your own question.

I spent exactly $270 (no extra tax/shipping) for the Zelda bundle with two other games. Impulse buy from a Newegg sale. I did so under the assumption the eShop was loaded with fun games. It was quite jarring to see the store isn't very deep. And a huge chunk of the games are out of the question because they're full retail price, which is absurd when they're a fraction of the cost at regular Steam/GoG/Amazon prices (even worse factoring in heavily discounted titles during sales). I own a lot of 'em and paid far less than Nintendo's asking price. Wii U isn't being competitive when the exact same Lego game retails for $60 on Wii, but $30 (or less) elsewhere. Same for Trine and other indie fare. It's a price gouging ripoff. Same with the VC games. Most of those games are ancient and should sell for a buck or two.

I'm playing 3D World with the gf which is really fun. Im playing W101 and it's a solid C+ effort; kinda fun but the shape drawing is annoying, game monologues too much, level progression is trite, camera is shit in places, and the screen occasionally becomes a difficult to follow mess. I may pick up NSMBU, although we kinda played it a lot already with her nephews. I'm hesitant with Pikmin because I abruptly stopped my Pikmin 2 playthrough on GC and wasn't compelled to go back to it. Already own superior PC versions of Sonic Racing, Rayman, etc. I will look into a RE and a few others, but I'm being honest when I say these are very slim pickings for a console out this long.

You, sir, are an illogical person. Here's why:

The fake-polite "sir" thing got old long ago. Drop it.

Illogical doesnt describe anything I did. I'm already playing Mario and 101, and will get DK soon if reviews are stellar. I incorrectly assumed Super Smash, Zelda and other compelling content would be out sooner rather than later. Yeah, tough luck for my impulse buy, but would you say that to every person who got one and ended up greatly disappointed? Because I'm one of apparently many who aren't very happy with the state of the Wii U. Lambasting my shopping habits doesn't change the lackluster experience of owning this console.

I lost the plot soon after launch. Wibble.

Really? Did you post this just to be different?
Well I'm different too then. It was pretty boring. MK is a bit like oxygen, you need it but it doesn't blow your socks off but other than that, yes Child of Light looks at least original and interesting.

This Direct makes me assume they want to do a stage presentation at E3 which is why they're not announcing everything right now. That said, I enjoyed it a lot. Little Mac, Mario Kart, X, Bayonetta 2... Everything looked great.

Just woke up and scanning the first few pages of NeoGAF there's nothing big at all. Seems like a disappointing Direct as usual. I can't even find any new Hyrule Warriors stuff, which is really odd. I'll have to watch the whole Direct later tonight.

What else do you all think Nintendo has in development for the Wii U (apart from the titles shown here)? There's IS/Atlus' SMTxFE and then we have Zelda U. Other than that I can't really think of much else.

Besides SMT x FE and Zelda U, the announced first-party retail titles not mentioned in the Direct are Yarn Yoshi and Hyrule Warriors. The only third-party game that's even kind of exclusive is Sonic Boom (also on 3DS).

And that's it.

I agree that they're done pouring money into this loser. I would be extremely surprised if they announced a new title in a big franchise (Metroid) at this point.

I got it on launch. I have 15 retail titles and a plethora of eShop titles. Average of over 1 new title a month. I also have a lot pre-ordered for this year. I'm very happy with my Wii U and I haven't had a month of not playing a game on it since February last year

So I assume you played the Wonderful 101, Super Mario 3D World, and Zombi U already, right?

Ignoring that this is a Direct thread, but I feel that Jado is right about the Wii U being barren. I have 7 retail (5 which are exclusive) Wii U games and I don't feel that satisfied with the system either. Interested in Smash Bros, NES Remix and maybe Bayonetta 2... not sure what else I'm looking forward to

It doesn't matter whether he bought it or not without knowing what he's getting himself into. It does not change that there are constant droughts on the system, the Wii was never this bad when it launched.

With all that said, it was a decent direct. Really nice to see Little Mac confirmed for Smash Bros! And NES Remix 2 sounds great

Sorry, but this is nonsense. I don't believe you.

What don't you believe? That I own a Wii U? That my GF questioned my purchase as a bad decision? That Im genuinely disappointed in the meager selection of titles that appeal to me? That a large chunk of eShop games I already own superior versions on PC, all for a fraction of Nintendo's crazy non-competitive prices? I've detailed in the last couple of posts all my issues with the console. I don't see what's so hard to believe.

I mentioned on this page I'm playing Mario and 101. Mario is great; 101 is nifty but has problems.

wait, what exactly were people expecting from this

A healthy number of games on a reasonable release schedule. That's all anyone wants. What we got was really dire.

From what I've seen around the net, people were expecting huge megatons to be revealed, with release over the next three months to fill the gap between DKC and Mario Kart

You do realise that it's the developer (or their publisher which isn't common since they self publish) who set the price, not Nintendo, right?

As someone who thought that the Wii U had a GREAT first year game-wise, this year is looking dire.

Real shame. Nintendo need to do something - anything - to get more quality games on the system this year.

Didn't last year also look dire? ;)

I thought last year was really freaking awful. The good chunk of 2013 was a wasteland with games far few and between. It sort of picked up during the last few months with games like 3D World.

*below my post* EmCeeGramr is right though, there isn't much they could do about it right now because developing games takes a long time. I feel Nintendo should've prepared for this console and the move to HD better. I think what they might be able to do right now in the mean time is to constantly release more VC games at a better rate. The VC service as is is way too slow and barren.

A healthy number of games on a reasonable release schedule. That's all anyone wants. What we got was really dire.

Nintendo already released a schedule two weeks ago for its upcoming retail products. There weren't going to be any hidden games from major teams appearing.

This situation was spelled out a whole year ago, confirmed months ago, and there's not much Nintendo can do right now about it. It's terrible but you'd have to be really uninformed to expect otherwise.

I don't know, this feels like before and after E3 2013, when some people like myself were desperately trying to explain that it was nigh physically and economically impossible for Nintendo to be working on much more major stuff than we already knew, and people were still stunned when that happened exactly.

Didn't last year also look dire? ;)

There always seemed to be that next great game just around the corner. So far this year, we have DK and MK8 before June.

I'm sure by the end of the year there'll be a few more titles to make a good-ish year, but still, Nintendo are clearly struggling!

Sorry about that, didn't even see that post.

Why do people expect W101 to appeal/satisfy every gamer?

Mainly because it's one of the best exclusive games on the system. It won't appeal to everyone; no game truly can, especially not a niche game like W101. But it's the one of the best examples of a standout third party developed game on the Wii U that, by this point, is relatively cheap, so it's brought up often. Matthewmatosis has a great, in-depth review of the game, though as a warning to anyone who hasn't played the game it does contain (mainly gameplay) related spoilers.

You forgoet Pokémon Battle Trozei, GBA VC on Wii U in April, Steel Diver now out

And Weapon Shop de Omasse gets released next week for the 3DS.

Well at this point it's pretty much clear that if you like to game a lot and you love Nintendo games, then you will buy a WiiU as a secundairy console for just those titles. You'll probably play less than 10 titles on it a year. In my case, probably around 6 or 7 games at most.
But i do play those 6 or 7 games to death with my GF and son. They are fun games of an extremely high quality imo.

For all other gaming needs, i have the PS4.

I suspect Nintendo is already shifting resources to Wii U's successor.

I don't know...we thought the lack of Wii games in the latter half of its life meant the next console would launch with good support, and look how that turned out. It's been this way for so long, it's practically a guarantee: whenever you think Nintendo is proactively working on something for a home console, they're fucking not.

wait, what exactly were people expecting from this

Some... kind of action, or something to inspire further confidence in the Wii U beyond the titles already announced. Maybe not make it so shockingly obvious it has an expiration date.

Maybe a few Wii U surprise announcements. Hell, Wind Waker HD was shoved out into the spotlight as an experiment around this time last year, and they fast-tracked it to be out that very same year.

Heck, seeing these announced for America would've been a start:

Not saying they would set the world on fire, but do SOMETHING with the damn console.

2013 was like game & wario and lego and... monster hunter 3 ultimate from january through august.

2014 also has three games: dkc tf, nes remix 2, and mario kart 8, but all of them seem way better than what we got last year.

from june onward, we can expect bayonetta 2, sonic boom, hyrule warriors, smash bros., and i will just go out on a limb and assume yarn yoshi and x. i think it's pretty comparable to last year's offerings of nslu, pikmin 3, tww hd, sonic lost world, wonderful 101, and mario 3d world.

I did enjoy this nintendo direct. Got exactly what i expected and nothing more. But overall it is going to be a pretty sad gaming year if this is all what is on offer. funny part is most of the games i am going to buy are going to be on wii u. Wii u i am going to buy Mario Kart, Bayonetta 2 and Smash on my 3ds Senran Kagura and maybe layton vs ace attorney. and ps3 Tales of xillia 2 and atelier escha. I also own a vita but sadly there is nothing i want to buy for that. main reason was that it is going to be a persona machine so still satisfied with my vita. Also glad that i didnt buy a ps4 was excited by the promise but there is litterly nothing that i want to play or that looks good on that.

I just checked Wiki for the release dates of games and you're pretty much right.

I guess the year ending strong made the slow start forgetful. I'll hopefully be doing the same for this year at the start of next!

Happy to admit when I've been proven wrong :)

Pokemon Trozei wasn't so great. It was pretty shallow for a puzzle game. It looked okay but it got pretty old fast.

I'd rather have a Pokemon Puzzle League battle.

Im lucky in that i never owned or really played a wii. So when i bought my Wii U, i have alot of Wii games i still need to play through. I just bought Zelda TP, so for me right now, i have a shitload of games im able to play. Im almost done with SMBU then i got the Luigi one to get through as well.

SO for me its not that crappy right now.

Also, nintendo needs to do 64 and Gamecube HD remakes. I'd be all over quite a few of them old school games.

I suppose if you spent the entire day yesterday in this thread posting My Body Is Reggie gifs and getting hyped up belief AND then being disappointing - then that is on you.

They delivered pretty much the exact thing they promised they would, some news and footage of upcoming games, with a few small tidbits of news.

They are not going to announce Zelda U this way, not to just 40k (give or take) people watching a stream. More people watch League and DOTA on a daily basis than these things. They will save the big announcements for big events.

No new retail games. No risks. No change in strategy. Maybe a cheap eShop cash-in like NES Rehash Volume 2. Continued droughts. Trailers for the big, expected sequels with no surprises. Overall incompetence.

Do I win anything?

Why would anyone expect that?

Also, I'm expecting to get some more interesting titles after the wave of spring SW goes by and its time for E3.
