Holy shit! Cinemaware goodness! Rocket Ranger, Wings and It Came From The Desert next!
Isn't/wasn't Defender of the Crown already on iOS?

Rocket Ranger is already on iOS! Bad controls though.

I think Wings is on android but only as part of a tech demo and yes, Defender of the Crown is also on iOS, again, bad controls though.

Any more impressions for tengami? Does the gameplay hold up or is it just beautiful to look at?

I'll let others answer this because I've noticed some games of this kind are hated by many and loved by myself (not only but still...)

I know for a fact some of the games I loved most in recent times like Sword&Sworcery or Device 6 are considered 'less' games by some friends of mine, while I think they transcend the gaming boundaries exploring other fields of sensorial experiences....and I consider them 'more' (obviously I have a ton of fun playing/interacting with them too...while others do not).

With this premise, I'm in love with Tengami so far.
As for the 'interactive' part I found some dead simple puzzles (more like a tutorial about how to interact with the world) in the start...but now I'm stuck in front of a multiple stages puzzle.

BTW...it's easy to forget about it because the first thing you notice while playing Tengami is how gorgeous the graphics is (I'm a fan of Japanese paper, in rl my work is commercing in paper)...but I would like to point out that, right out of the bat, the game is really complete and polished with proper localizations, iCloud seamless support, Game Center integration and all those things that one would think should be the standard nowadays (but they aren't).

The game that Tengami resembles most so far is Sword&Sworcery imho (I consider S&S a masterpiece).

Hope it helps!!!

Cool new release, and a pleasant surprise at how fun it is:

Word Mage
iTunes

....

I don't think I've played a word game that's as fast and involved as this one. You need to be quick and be planning ahead, with only seconds to do so.

Word games can be a lot of fun, I always enjoy seeing new ones mentioned I missed hearing about, thanks for the recommendation.

Going to add Tengami to the OP later today/early weekend. Any other gems? :)

OUT THERE NEXT WEEK WOOOOOOOOOOOO

On the topic of word games, while not quite as new (but I'd wager definitely a bigger splash Word Mage above), Spell Quest: Grimm's Journey is probably OP worthy. I'd say it's the biggest entry for a word game fan since Words of Wonder, and prior to that I think was Spellwood.

Spell Quest also gets extra points for being free, with an IAP coin doubler that works more as a "I'm enjoying this free game so much, I really should pay something" than an actual coin doubler, because you're given the option to turn it off after buying it, as it's not even necessary to the game and if you leave it on you'll end up with way too much money... basically the entire game is free the whole way through.

It does, thank you! Definitely going to pick it up, just a question of when now. ;)

So far it's a mix between a slow paced Sword&Sworcery and The Room 2, and I'm loving it.
The third chapter is utterly fantastic (have yet to complete it), I'm 3 hours in.

Not really unexpected since it's from the same devs of Puzzlecraft, but I've played Another case solved for a straight hour and I must say it's pretty awesome.
The 'solving case' part after the 'matching' part is pretty great so far.
No clue about the freemium part, but so far seems negligible.

yeah having similar funs. The games industry really does need like 1000x more output of detective games.

Beat Drift update
- Added 2 new levels.
- Added option to reverse the controls.
- Allow users to continue listening to their own music during game.
- Minor bug fixes and interface tweaks.

New level Intangible is even faster than Blur. My reflexes have been defeated
---

Since some on TA were asking how Spell Quest compared to Word Mage, gave Spell Quest a try and Word Mage is so much faster and intense. In Spell Quest, you can select letters anywhere on the board, while in Word Mage, the letters need to be next to each other. In Spell Quest, spelling a word removes the letters from the board, while here, the board stays consistent, you can't scramble the board, and you must make the best of what you have for the whole round. The timer adds an extra layer of challenge and intensity that Spell Quest lacks. Word Mage's passive and active abilities also add a strategic element not seen in Spell Quest; for example, Overcharge pauses time when you spell a five letter word, so you'll want to play around that, chain together longer words or save them for the best time even though they'll do more damage, and especially since once you use the word, you can't use it again. Spell Quest has more charming visuals, but Word Mage is superior in my opinion as a challenging game.

That should do the trick. It's a very quick process too.

Would this work for games that are crossbuy? I have FF4 and it's crossbuy but it doesn't sync saves. I would like to be able to play on the go on my phone and then transfer the save over to my ipad when at home. Any idea if that would work out?

It should, the file structure is the same between iPad/iPhone so you should just be able to find the matching folder on the opposite platform and drop the files in.

Shit, that changes everything. Still, why would you support Crossbuy and not Cross save when the game is a 20-30 hour RPG is beyond me.

Nice to hear a comparison in favor of Word Mage, I'll give it a look for sure. Spell Quest does open up quite a bit later on though, if you keep with it. There's a ton of things that get added to the game (all the upgrades/tomes, etc), and it does have timed levels / alternate modes. I think Spell Quest is probably more casual friendly, looking at it as well, not that it matters too much for me. Also I'm generally more of a fan of the at-your-own pace scheme to word games... the timers can get me disinterested in them.

For challenge, I would expect Words of Wonder to beat out Word Mage though, though Words of Wonder is probably the hardest word game ever made once you reach the later worlds, iirc some of the challenges haven't actually even been completed according the guides from the facebook version from what I read. It's actually a decent game, and plays like Word Mage a little more from your description I guess, in the sense you spell words with adjoining letters (though the tiles are dropped and replaced after using them here), and tiles can become special tiles when you spell longer words. Using multiple special tiles in the same word gives extra points and special board clears (of course you have to plan out the words correctly to get the special tiles in the right spot).

OUT THERE NEXT WEEK WOOOOOOOOOOOO

MAD SKILLS MOTOCROSS 2 is out and it's GREAT!
What truly pisses me off is that I can't believe they once again screwed up and won't let you customize where to place the UI buttons/controls, it's unconvenient when playing on iPad!
Performance is decent on my 1st Gen Mini.

Hey Pray for Death, hanks for the Autumn Dinasty "it's FREE" post man!

Ouch :(
How does King of Chicago control?

You guys missed the Bug Heroes 2 sale. It's $1 now, but it's really worth it. Awesome game, the best from Foursaken Media.

Just completed Tengami.

Pure poetry.

A short but touching experience with sky high production values and some mind bending puzzles.

Took me a bit less than 4 hours (most of all spent walking around), but I really enjoyed the ride, very relaxing.

Definitively NOT suited to the inpatients or action lovers.

Puzzle fans, fans of Unblock Me and Cross Fingers, you need to check out Shapist

For the mot part it's OK, they've sorted it so that you can just tap for mouse control but the action sequences either use a virtual stick that's pretty unresponsive.

Any Oquonie impressions? Pitta, did you buy it?

I'm downloading it as in typing.
Didn't like Hiversaries that much and I fear this is in the same vein, but I can't say no to that ultra cool iso graphics tgat reminds me Head over Heels.
Will report if you didn't buy it already.

Transport Tycoon just had a price drop.
Worth playing on an ipod touch? I don't have a tablet, might be a bit hard to play :(

I'm playing Oquonie.
It's really beautiful, but I've absolutely no idea of what I'm doing.
If anyone knows how to pass the first stage, I'm all ears.

EDIT: Ok....I'm getting the hang of it and now at least I have a clear target and understood how to traverse the various inter dimensional worlds.
It's starting to get better and better now...liking it much more than Hiversaries.
Graphically is a joy...so weird, so alien, so beautiful.

Seanbaby's Calculords is out. F2P, saw some ads. Not sure what the IAPs do. Someone made a thread, too.

It's basically a collector card game + lane-based strategy RPG + simple math. Try it if you can handle getting to a desired number under 100 (at least from what I've seen) using addition, subtraction and multiplication with a set group of numbers (which is actually a deck of numbers you can edit later, crazy) to deploy your units. You get a bonus (I think it's an extra turn?) if you use all the numbers you're given for your turn.

Bug Heroes 2 is definitely OP-worthy. I think it's the best Foursaken game yet, even exceeding Block Fortress and Heroes & Castles. Definitely superior to the first Bug Heroes

It's fast and action-packed, with tons of tactical depth. Controlling two heroes is fluid and adds so much strategy and each hero plays differently. It's also extremely generous and balanced; you'll never have to spend a cent on the game beyond the initial purchase to experience everything the game has to offer. The wealth of content, variety, and depth here rivals the best PC indies IMO and I haven't even tried multiplayer yet

Another Case Solved is seriously so good.

yeah played a bit too much at work yesterday lol.

wonder if there is an ability or something to let me see ahead. blowing a huge magnifying glass chain until you realize you need that for the next objective down the line kinda sucks :X

Thanks for the early impressions, Pitta. Internet is spotty where I am right now but I'll grab it when I get back home.

To be fair I didn't enjoy Hiversaires much when I first tried it either, but I went back to it after a while with a different mindset and it eventually clicked. Aside from a specific puzzle (the
penultimate door
) it follows a certain logic that's rewarding after you "get it". Sounds like Oquonie follows a similar development, but with the different presentation making it less obtuse.

I think you are right...I'll probably get back at Hiversaries someday for that very reason.
Oquonie, after admittedly a struggling first hour I was able to get through thanks to the lovely graphics, clicked suddenly and now I'm pretty hooked.
Somehow I think I got how the weird universe is regulated and I know what must be done.
Now I'm trying to do it, and it's a lot of fun.

EDIT: now it's getting really serious. Was quite a while since I had to get pen and paper to solve a puzzle or to map a world.

Wow that's an awesome game. Easy to get into, fun strategies and addictive. Love it.

Thought Emoji Movie was good. Take that as you will.
"the latest game from the makers of Puzzle Craft."

Say no more.

I wish it was 5 bucks with out the bullshit IAP.

It takes a few cases before the IAP wall hits.. and it hits pretty hard... some of the levels are just pretty freaking unfair without tossing down cash... you just don't have enough moves for the amount they want you to get. To the point you swear that the drops are purposely going against you.

I really loved it until that hit.. but it ruins what is a pretty nifty little game.

Are you making use of your skills and tools? I'm on chapter 2 and, while it gets hard, I haven't encountered anything that I can't get past with strategic use of skills and tools.

I am, but it still feels cheap. I've been able to beat quite a few cases in Ch. 2.. but if the progression continues that way it has.. I've lost hope.

I knew going in to expect that paywall feeling.. but it hit harder than I would have liked.

Yep. Shame is isn't getting much attention here.

I love how different each hero is from each other, yet most of them are fun to play. And with you controlling two characters at once, there's plenty of different combinations to try.

Ugh, I know nothing about this, could you please elaborate a little?

It's an issue where your device doesn't properly authenticate SSL connections; basically, that lock icon you see on secure websites using Safari is effectively meaningless once hackers learn to exploit this and Safari (or any other built-in app that uses secure communication like Mail) can have their data intercepted without the user ever knowing.

Do not, under any circumstance, skip this update.

A BIG HUGE WARNING TO PEOPLE PLAYING OQUONIE :(((((((((

During the loading screen there is a circle in the lower right corner.

DO NOT TOUCH IT.

Without any prompt it deletes your save.

DAMN IT!!!!
I was already at the fourth red pillar!!!!

EDIT: dev informed me via twitter he has patched this already, next update.
So till then, watch out.
Game is still great tough.

how is bug heroes 2 different from one? videos make it look just a bit better visually and adifferent camera angle.

All around a much better game.

It plays a little like a MOBA now. You are not just defending your base, but in PvP you have to destroy the enemy's, and there are ally creeps. There are 25 heroes and they play very different from each other. In the first game all the bugs were suited for everything, now they have very specific roles and very different skill sets, which greatly improves the tactical depth. Now you only take 2 heroes, but they are both present in the battlefield and you freely switch between both or give commands. Since each hero is very weak and limited alone, you need two heroes that complement each other well. You will play in a completely different way depending on the heroes you take.

There's also more stuff in the way of RPG elements, like equipment system, scrolls, persistent upgrades, etc.

Also, many more enemy types and the game plays much better all around.

It's also not just a bit better visually, it's like one generation ahead.

It's really better in every possible way. The first game didn't really grab my attention.

How are the iOS ports of the Phoenix Wright trilogy? I have them on DS, and am tempted to double dip. But from what I've played thus far, the menus are really choppy. I sometimes feel it goes into single digit FPS.

Some Machinarium codes up for grabs! (NA store only) Quote to reveal -- just post to let people know which one you took:

Also, has anyone checked out Calculords? I hadn't heard a thing about it, picked it up based solely on the name (free to play), but it's really fascinating -- It's sort of like Plants vs. Zombies mixed with Donkey Kong Jr. Math. Seanbaby made it, apparently:

screen568x568.jpeg

screen568x568.jpeg

Every turn, you draw 2-4 cards and 6 numbers -- then you have to add, subtract, or multiply your numbers together to generate the "resources" to play your specific card. So if you want to play a card with a 17 cost, and you have a 1, 2, and 9, you can play it with 9 x 2 - 1 = 17, then play the card. You play cards to summon units, then click "Fight" to have them roll out down the lanes.

If you use up all six numbers, you get a "Calculord" bonus that gives you a fresh set of 6 numbers, and if you are able to deploy all of your units, you pull an extra 2 cards for your next turn. So it's in your best interest to be smart with what numbers you use, since smart play lets you deploy more units.

Play in the lanes is also kind of cool in that you have two "classes" of units -- offensive based or push-based. The push-based units are typically more defensive and actually shove units back down the lane; your units march down the lane in the order they're summoned, so it's best to start with a push unit or two and then have offensive units behind them.

It's really, really cool. I've only played the first two battles but there looks to be a shit-ton of customization (full deck building, including winning units/cards from enemies and even determining what extra numbers you use for playing cards).

Warning: It does have ads and IAP, though -- it has a "Fun Club" option where you can sub to gain extra cards and remove ads (not sure if it's a one-time payment or sub), and there are expansion decks of units that look to be 99 cents or $1.99. I think it's worth a toss, though, as it's really clever.
