Low scores all over the place and I'm not surprised. all video and media since E3 was hinting on a bad game, the game seems to be full of flaws and mistakes and that was clear for anyone who cared to watch the videos carefully without hype.

This is Hitman Absolution and Tomb Raider situation all over again as Square Enix keep killing and dumbing down Eidos IPs.

Hmm some worse scores than I would have expected from this team. I'm glad I'm going to be trying out on Gamefly before I bought it.

Bat-vision was heavily criticized and called overpowered and called detrimental to the game's aesthetics as the great art was hidden for long times.

Well this must have flown right past me. Cheers for clearing it up. Even still, the Arkham games never lost points for that. They were adored in spite of any shortcomings. Like, you understand where I'm coming from, right? Compared to your average AAA fare, it doesn't seem like Thief is really doing much worse, and if it is, it's not being communicated.

This is pretty important for some people !

Ps If you have played this game on PS4, how about the frame rate ?

Framerate was decent but it did dip throughout. Yes, the atmosphere went a long way into keeping me playing further. It's a game I'd revisit for the atmosphere alone, that's how strongly I enjoyed that aspect of it.

You have some saying this(Game Informer)

''If you’re content to save your game every couple minutes and enjoy a slower-paced stealth game, then Thief rewards you with plenty of moments so tense you might catch yourself holding your breath. Eidos-Montreal may have adhered too closely to the series’ roots, resulting in a reboot that suffers from classic problems like simplistic combat and trial-and-error sneaking missions. However, locked behind this old-school game design is a gem that stealth fans should eye up for their collection''

And some like Kotaku going:

"It's hard to know quite where to begin with a shambling mediocrity such as this"

Opinions will be opinions I guess...

Apparently the levels are huge. I guess I'll be fooling around with this until Stick of Truth comes out in a few weeks.

What kind of attitude? He clearly doesn't like it, and he's letting people know the way he's leaning because he knows that he won't have the review today.

Some people feel that it's unprofessional to offhandedly talk about the details of a review before fully publishing it. I don't care one way or the other, it's the guy's personal Twitter account. If he wants to tell people he isn't enjoying the game he's playing, that's his prerogative.

GI are obviously trolling. Nothing about the footage suggests they've adhered to the series' roots.

Nothing...

This game is such a contradiction. Some reviewers say the levels are big, others say they are too tight and small.

Some say it stays too far from its roots, some say it sticks too closely to them....oh what to do...to buy or not to buy.

Sounds like the "levels" are split up in to smaller zones. Probably what is causing the contradiction.

Just like Deadly Shadows.

Yeah they're all over the place. If you're in doubt I suggest waiting a bit until some GAFers have played it. GAF impressions often are way more accurate.

For me
4-6 = mediocre
7-8 = good
9 = very good
10 = must play

anything below 4 is usually garbage.

Yep, pretty much, I use this scale as well, however I have enjoyed some games very much that landed in the 6 region, Remember Me, Of Orcs and Men to name a few.

Average 75+ score seems like a game that lands in the 'Good" category. Will be picking up Thief tomorrow for PS4.

I haven't played the original but i'm considering getting this. It got higher reviews than i expected, if it had been mostly 6's i wouldn't bother but 7-8 isn't so bad.

That’s the most important thing to take away from my meandering screed. For the vast majority of the time, I had so much fun. It didn’t need to match its predecessors to achieve that. I have spent the last three days crouched in shadows, terrified of light, giggling with glee as I evade the gazes of patrolling enemies (some of whom even deliver a proper Thiefy “Doo be doo be doo”!), and stuffing every twinkly candlestick and golden pair of scissors I could find into my trousers.

Some will be furious about one aspect or other, and they will be loud about it on the internet. The context sensitive jump/climb/swoop button is going to be the launch pad that fires a lot of people out of the game in abject fury. But the truth is, I’ve had a fantastic time playing it. For where it falls short, it far more often had me crouched in a shadow, heart racing, waiting for the perfect moment to dart past a guard’s routine. It may be the fourth best Thief game, but it’s a damned fine game in its own rights.

That's the last bit of the RPS article... and really all I need to know to at least give it a try sometime.

yup. opinions are like assholes after all. my opinion is that it's a bloody good game and nailed everything i felt from the original games but at the same time, feeling modern.

Looking at those scores and I have to ask myself, who do I even trust anymore. We have gaming media, but do we have anyone who can give us an honest review anymore. I wasn't planning to get the game anyways and while the scores do reflect my own predictions, I don't think I can trust reviewers anymore beyond a general guideline of a games quality.

Funny, first few comments in the thread are about how bad the scores are. Business as usual. 6-8 is seen as cringeworthy apparently.

Yeah exactly, I'll just wait for the Gaf-pressions (Gaf Impressions, just created that word)

Very surprised by this, have been on a media-embargo, but was sure it was going to be good. Well, guess Im getting it anyways to check for myself, but now its definitely bomba-bin material for me :(

In their defense, the first line of reviews I added to the OP coincidentally all were in the 6-range. I took about 20 to 30 minutes to get all the reviews added to the OP, which tilted the sentiment a bit in the game's favor.

Alex from Giant Bomb says he still needs to finish it up, but says expect it to be a lower-end review, and that it sucks.

Judging from the reactions on this game, it seems to be stuck in the middle of two options: going old school or going AAA, big budget set piece game. A lot of the more mainstream review outlets seem to fault it for not being modern or flashy enough, while more PC-centric sites like PC Gamer and RPS seem to be of the mind that while it's very old-school in some ways, the faults come from attempting to be modern.

This is on top of the rather universal claim that the story sucks. It's kind of fascinating to see a game find universal fault for apparently different reasons. The development of this game was surely a real bloody battle.

I really don't know what to do now, I have this on pre-order but I have a gift voucher for Amazon that'll cover the price of it, so I might just pay for it using that.. so I won't feel as guilty if it isn't too great.

Yeah I haven't gotten into the text yet, but the scores seemed alright at a glance. It just seems anything lower than an 8 always gets a lot of "yikes" from the crowd.

Games that are reimaginings of beloved, nostalgic franchises that take 5 years to develop with monstrous budgets have a lot of expectations.

Currently polling second in Australia's federal election (first in the Gold Coast), this feral may one day be your Bogan King.
I have no idea on what planet Thief could be seen as sticking too rigidly to old ideas.

Thanks, that's kind of reassuring. One final question: how often does a mission end with Garrett magically getting caught resulting in an explosive/heavily scripted chase scene?

Twice maybe.

Excellente review EatChildren. Seems like a game to buy on sale then.

Cheers.

Where once upon a time a water arrow was a high value resources because you knew you'd have to use them but also didn't want to waste, that's far less of a problem here because you don't really need them. Using them makes the game easier again.

So a game mechanic that's very risk/reward is now considered a problem?

Do the difficulty modifiers help to enhance the game further? Is there a specific configuration of modifiers that help to recreate the classic Thief experience or make the game interesting?
