I don't qualify two nights in a row as brief.

I've missed two gameplay sessions with friends now, and that's the whole damn point of xbox live.

The point is others would. I'm not disagreeing with you here; I think there should be a way of forcing the update.

I was just reading some of the things they updated. I don't have an xbox one, but i'm glad they had this update. Reading that list it seems like you guys were seriously stuck in the ps3 age without cross party chat??

xbox one has had cross-game party chat since day one. the change is more about how invites work than party chat.

tech question: i have a 2.1 soundbar i use for audio (optical) and am unsure what to set my xbox to output: stereo uncompressed or dolby whatever the hell its called, 5.1. naturally id assume to output stereo as i dont have multiple speakers set up (no room in my apartment) but my soundbar does have this 'virtual surround sound' option. im not a big audio guy, but when ive got that option turned on it does seem to "widen" the sound field a bit.

should i leave it at stereo uncompressed and keep that option off/on (i dont know if it actually degrades audio quality) or set it to 5.1 and have it off/on?

Maybe someone has mentioned this.

If you have an Xbox Music subscription, when you create a playlist you can choose for the music videos of the songs that have music videos to play when the song comes up. Really cool feature. So if I have Criminal for example by Fiona Apple on my playlist, when it comes up it will show the video instead of your typical splash screen with the music.

yea it's a great feature that they added to it.

From what I could tell, I guess it seemed like MS initially assumed everyone used parties to move groups of people from game to game, hence the previous auto invite stuff, and disabling party chat by default (since the game itself would have you chatting anyway). If that was your specific scenario, the previous version probably worked fine.

Now the default features are set up for what's probably the more likely scenario for most people, where you don't necessarily always want to play the same game immediately with a party, but you do want to always talk to them no matter what, and then simply have the option of inviting everyone (like on 360).

In fact, a lot of the more annoying initial Xbox One issues seemed to be a case of trying to automate too many things, and having weird defaults, rather then stuff being "broken" in the traditional sense. Good to see them recognizing those issues though.

But that goes against what ms is trying to do. Make updates half invisible and less worry.

Having the option in the settings menu to force update doesn't complicate it for users who don't care to do it. It's not an uncommon feature to have in modern electronics.

Did they fix the Full RGB color problem or black crush? I notice DR3 isn't that dark anymore at night time. I even lower the brightness down a bit but not sure if this is a placebo effect.

Full Range works on my computer monitor just fine but is messed up on my TV. For some reason my TV won't detect the full range signal and adjust the TV mode accordingly. It works fine on PS4. Blacks are unfortunately still crushed in Dead Rising 3. The only way they aren't is if I'm using my computer monitor and setting the XB1 to limited range. The UI is then brighter than it should be, but at least game looks like it should. I still have no clue why DR3 has this issue. Some claim it's the scaler, but Titanfall didn't have the same issue.

What I want to know is... Does this update incorporate the 'performance boost' that was talked about?

No way to know this since the games already out were programmed before the boost.

Hmm still no auto login for a certain profile.

I really liked that feature from the 360. I know the Kinect should sign you in but sometimes it is a little slow.

"8% Kinect"? If it did, we probably wouldn't see games that use it until the Fall at the earliest.

That's another thing. Originally, something like 10% was allocated to the Kinect sensor. They reckoned on freeing up 8% of this by shutting off the camera - leaving 2% purely for the voice commands feature.

If they shut off the camera, even if this can be a choice by the devs themselves - isn't that going to affect Twitch broadcasting???

Unless... the camera itself actually uses very little power - it's just the Kinect 'recognition' functions that are actually switched off.

Still, it would be nice to know whether MS have actually enabled this change anyway.

Most of all, just trying to work out whether devs now have access to this additional performance and / or the 'tiled resources' plus the new SDK tools to help devs utilise the ESRAM properly.

Bingo. The camera itself does not need a lot of resources, it's all the processing time reserved for recognition functionality that's the culprit.

By the way, what Microsoft people have said is that they'll give developers more options when it comes to using Kinect's capabilities, so it's probably not just a single on/off switch, but a range of functions you can enable or disable as necessary. Maybe some older games will get patched to take advantage of additional processing resources, but I doubt it.

Not sure if its been covered, but the avatar app has changed. They've got rid of the twinkly nintendo-esque music in the background, and also have changed a lot of the background choices, should you choose to have you avatar as your gamerpic.

They've actually got rid of some of the old backgrounds entirely.

You can also email your gamerpic directly to an inbox for use elsewhere.

If game, that doesn't utilize Kinect motion tracking, was patched. It would improve the frame rate, by a small margin but still it's possible.

Where the fuck are the achievements?! Honest to god i cant find them anymore, unless i "Compare Games" with someone, and even that it shows me a bunch of games i haven't played. Its ridiculous.

My Games & Apps.

When ever i open the Achievements app, it takes me to a page that is just the most recent game that i viewed achievements for. For instance, i can i see my 3 recent games under my profile, so its usually one of those. When i ever i hit B from the app, it just takes me to the dash. Im a wreck. There use to be an option under "My Profile" to view all games. It was a little box with three dots in it under your games. Its gone now.

That is odd, when I open the achievement's app in my games and app it functions as before. If I go into my profile via the friends tab then I can see the last three games I have played and achievement completion, not noticed that I can't see any more games there as I tend to use the other method to see my achievement's. If you use smart glass or you find the app you could pin the app so it's always available.

I figured it out. When i open the Achievements app and wait roughly 5 seconds, it ends up going to the full history list. But it i move the joystick, it remains on what ever game it was that i viewed recently. In this case it kept staying on BF4. This dashboard is still a mess.

The method MS uses to navigate backwards into apps is a horrible mess. This is emphasized by apps that don't open on the home screen.

I've said this since the beginning and I'll say it again: B shouldn't be a system level button, it should work inside the app you're in and that's it.

It seems they removed the notifications about new videos if your friends recorded something. They are not showing up in the feed anymore.

Why ??

I love the update that smartglass got. Now when I get a message on XBL my phone makes a noise and lets me know. I dont even have to have my XB1 on now to know if someone wants to play something.

"Xbox, go to XXX", for whatever is that you want (A specific game, friends, achievements, messages, etc).

Or, you can launch them in the apps section of my Games and Apps (Keep in mind that they are pin-able to the home screen too)

Yeah, it works similarly in WP8 and it's just as stupid and unintuitive there. I think they're changing it for WP8.1, and it's not really used in Windows 8.1, so it seems they might be aware of how dumb it is. Hopefully they can fix it sooner rather than later.

Groups and nicknaming would be good things to have for sure. They want our feedback so we should definitely let them know that this would be a good idea.

I also think it's very feasible to do. Hopefully, they're reading all of our comments here.

A force update feature would be nice, if only to avoid some inconveniences people might have. However brief it may be.

Yes, as I've said before, it'll be perfect for the people on both sides of fence. The core can get their updates right away and the casual players will not care and get it when the system pulls it. I see no negatives with that suggestion.

Finally got this update this morning.

Switching to 5.1 Dolby and then playing Killer Instinct was a revelation my back speakers kicked in.

Can't wait to replay DR3 now.

I really like that I can watch my game clips from anywhere on the SmartGlass app, have you always been able to do that?
