Any reason; why the UI in the older 'Before' screens look crisp/detailed when compared to the video stream (which is obvious), while the render resolutions looks similar?

these remind me of multiplatform games during the ps2/xbox area
the ps2 version always had the lighting and a bunch of effects completely missing and looked flat in comparison

in the 'run down the hallway with the epic atmosphere and statues while the lightning flashes, none of the columns draw shadows or affect the lighting anymore, it's just the window bit (that is probably faked to boot)

Why did I have to check this thread? Cannot unsee now. :'( I know people say there's not much difference between the two Mirror Knight versions, but I work with light every day (film) and there are huge differences in atmosphere. The retail version looks like a stage because of the lighting, like a closed controlled environment (in film it would mean the lighting would betray the set built for the film)...the demo version looks part of the world, with such an oppressive and angry background and creates such an immersive feeling.

I'm not a guy that puts graphics for the sake of graphics at the top and I couldn't care less for technical shenanigans ... however atmosphere and immersion are some of the most important features for me and I loved even the Dark Souls console graphical aspect because it was one of the few games that gave me such a powerful sense of its universe. From the screens and comparison videos I've seen in this thread (I don't want to spoil the game too much for myself), in the retail version I really don't feel the crushing power of the environment, that organic feeling I felt while playing Dark Souls.

As for the torch mechanic, I don't know what to say... I just remember the emphasis made on it for such a long time. This stuck into my mind and hyped me senseless the first time, just thinking of an optimised Tomb of the Giants.

Wow the Mirror Knight video confirms that the downgrade isn't just to do with torches. I hope the PC version looks like the demo :'(. For one, the giant mirror actually reflects light instead of being a black hole.

Namco just saying 'higher framerate and more!' just doesn't cut it for me I'm afraid.

Should have been a bit more specific.

IE Specular Highlights, texture resolution, normal maps, etc.

I doubt they'd have answered it if it was specific.

What do you even mean by that? It's not like the game doesn't have dynamic light sources.

I don't think that area was even in the next work test. That's the hallway to the Mirror Knight I think, which wasn't in the test.

OK cool. I was just wondering if it had ever been seen running on PS3 (that scene). I would of thought the PS Access footage would of been from a PS3 considering the commentary (the video is on the site).

No kidding, this mess is comparable to this:

What would ppl prefer FROM keeping the lighting in and have half the game run like Blightown or cut it to keep frame rate stable which makes them look like they deceived everybody?
How about hiring competent programmers so we could have good lighting and a stable framerate?

What is unfortunate is you cannot get Splinter Cell: Pandora Tomorrow working on PC anymore at all. Double Agent version is based off of the 360/PS3 version which is objectively worse than the different version that was released on Xbox/PS2.

So we basically miss out on two awesome Splinter Cell games on PC entirely. Emulation saves the day for me in this respect.

I think From just bit off more than they can chew, all of these effects are very expensive and very difficult to pull off on the last-gen consoles.

Comparison of the Hall, this is fucking awful.

The torches are gone.
Characted no longer gets lit when the thunder falls.
Everything looks flat.[/QUOTE]

Hopefully those enemies from the demo version make it back in NG+ or something. The fact that they are replaced by one guy with a sword/shield is way more disappointing to me then any visual downgrade.

I just imagined they starting with the PC as the main platform and going "HEY LOOK AT ALL THE COOL SHIT WE CAN ADD TO THE GAME"

All that awesome ambientation is really lost on the retail. The fight itself dosn't look that bad, but damn if that hall was a big downgrade in every aspect.

I still hope that From managed to pull that on the PC version.

Durante isn't an end all solution to everything.

I'd say that, but didn't his original dark souls solution actually work on several other games even though Durante said

Actually, it really shouldn't work for anything other than Dark Souls. Even the basic buffer resizing functionality is hardcoded to apply to 1024x720 buffers (as vanilla DS uses), and I don't think any other PC title renders at that resolution.

So is this what we can expect from the new engine?

How does this compare to the old engine? Is it an upgrade at all?

The new engine is capable of delivering way beyond the previous (as the demo proves), unfortunately, the PS360 isn't capable of running with all the bells-and-whistles.

i have a feeling that even the PC version is going to look downgraded and the only hope would be if they made a next gen edition next year, kinda like they did with nba2k14 where the PC just got a ported version of the PS3/xbox

It's not like we haven't seen these removed effects on these consoles before. FROM just couldn't do it for whatever reason.

Very disappointing. I wonder if they had trouble porting a PC game to PS3 and if that's really how it was handled this time. Though I assume not.

That's probably the biggest downgrade comparison yet. It would be really nice if the PC version still had all of these effects. It won't stop me from buying it, but it might make me wait for a sale if this actually has gameplay impact.

Well, if they created their engine for x86/x64 with PC/next-gen in mind, going back to powerPC and Cell adds an extra level of difficulty.

Certainly plausible.

This is my big worry.

This isn't just a lighting change, after all. Textures and geometry are also different.
