3D might come as an update to the Blu-Ray app and not a system update?

And yet this update includes a change to Blu Ray's 50Hz. For some reason app updates occur in OS updates sometimes. You also see it in Windows 8 -> 8.1 apps and iOS updates.

I'm actually curious as to what you find so terrible about the OS. I mean, calling it the worst of all time, you must have some pretty good reasons. What do you think they still need to fix?

Shit shouldn't be so hidden. I shouldn't have to manually "pin" the achievements tile just to check my achievements without using the Kinect. Same goes for all the other settings. That shit just needs to BE THERE, right in my face, easy to find and fast to access.

The main page is also a disaster. The Inception minimized window shit is terrible, and it took me a few hours to realize the the two tiles underneath it were my most recently used apps. I figured that this would continue with the tiles on the right, but nope, those two are static.

WTF? Nothing about this UI makes sense. It's completely unintuitive. I had to actually look up the exact required voice commands in order to be able to get around. Good UI design doesn't force the user to learn new things. It also doesn't confuse the user with obtuse layouts that aren't instantly understandable.

The PS4 UI requires no training. Everything is right there in your face, right where you expect it to be. I don't need to look up any voice commands just to get to where I want to go. It's all right there. Sure, it's not as flashy... but I don't need or want my game console UI to be flashy. I want it to be fast, functional and thoughtfully designed. The PS4 UI is that. The Xbone UI is an utter disaster.

It's mind-blowing to me that MS botched this so badly when their last 360 UI was practically perfect. How does this shit even happen?

Seriously? Because you have to pin the achievements app in order to access it without kinect or going in to the "My games and apps" menu the OS is the worst ever? And having the last 5 things you used on the home page so you can easily get back to them is a disaster? OK...

Its true. The Xbox UI insulted my wife and terrorizes my cat.

Yes. Obviously.

I shouldn't have to manually pin ANY tiles for core system functionality. That type of stuff should be baked into the UI, and it shouldn't be difficult to find. I shouldn't have to look through the "My Games and Apps" to check and see if there's an actual Achievements tile (or whatever else) and pin that myself.

I do like the "pinning" system, but if I had it my way I would only use it for games. I shouldn't have to use my pin space for basic system functionality. That's a complete design failure by any standard.

Imagine where a user doesn't want the Achievements tile right in their face. Imagine a system where the user could determine what is important and what is not and take two seconds to let the system know their preferences.

Imagine a world where the user base isn't entirely molvetica. What is 'core' to you, might not be for anyone else.

Installing the first of many updates now. I still need to go through and pick out my favorites so I know who's online.

Achievements aren't right there on the PS4 either, so I don't know what you're talking about.

First, it literally tells you that recently used apps go there when you first use the console. I'm serious. Go create a new account and when you go to the Home for the first time that area is blank and basically says 'recent games and apps go here.'

Second, that's not true, all four tiles under the main tile box are recently used apps in the order they were used last. It's sandwiched between the Friends title and Disc tile. (Friends app and the 'My Games and Apps' app doesn't show there because they have tiles already on the Home screen.)

I agree the way you need to learn the exact phrases to navigate is dumb. But if you say just 'Xbox' it tells you the commands you can say at the bottom of the screen.[/quote]

I disagree with this. The Xbox UI works like a smartphone. Everything is an app. All the apps are in the 'My Games and Apps' section.

There are issues with the Xbone's UI. But don't fucking blow it out of proportion.

Glad to hear that the Game DVR game clip will look a bit better. I've been sharing clips with some friends, so getting better video quality is great.
Glad to see that friend notifications are coming back. Not sure how they missed this at launch, but whatever, at least it is coming soon.

Yes they are? The "Trophies" icon is right there in the top row by your profile icon. If I ever want to look at my trophies, I instantly know exactly where I need to navigate to — and I knew that the first time I ever looked at my Trophies, because it only took one glance at the main menu bar for me to instantly understand where I could find that information.

It's not just the Achievements tile either, it's pretty much every bit of basic system functionality that's hidden in the apps folder. I shouldn't have to manage that stuff myself, it should be managed for me.

I somewhat get the smartphone analogy, though as an iOS user the concept of having my "apps" in two separate places doesn't make much sense. Hell, I think several of the Xbone apps shouldn't be apps in the first place. The friends list, for example, should be baked right into the main UI and not require me to launch a separate "app." 360 nailed that perfectly. Especially in the UI prior to the Metro overhaul. Though the Metro one wasn't bad either.

Oh, and "snap" is fucking terrible. So annoying when I accidentally snap some shit over the game I'm playing. If MS wants to overload users with customization options, then at least give me the option to disable snap entirely.

Not that I want to be overloaded with customization options.

What the hell are you trying to do to this thread? Jesus.

Just watched a newly recorded clip and compared it to an old one, they are definitely better compressed, a lot less artifacting and much more clearer.
This surprised me a bit as I wasn't expecting it to be all that different.

I really don't know how this is possible.

Good to see Microsoft fine tuning the Xbox One OS. I hope external storage support comes out in the next round of updates. It's hilarious that the Wii U has had this feature since nearly the beginning and the other consoles still don't.

Launching the "electronic manual" for Titanfall snaps it over your game.

lol I am thinking the same, even if it happens just double tap B or say Xbox unsnap. Is that too hard?

Didn't know about the double tap B. That will help.

And no, obviously that's not "too hard." Should it be necessary, though? Double tapping B is a good tip, but I shouldn't have to get on NeoGAF and have a user explain that to me. Things like that should be easy to understand just from using the UI itself.

That's the main problem with the Xbone UI overall. You have to go out of your way to learn how to use it. A good design doesn't require that.

I wonder how long it will take them to bring in Live Tiles.

...Then again, It'll probably be when they decide to open up the Appstore to developers. I'd kill to be able to pin a Weather app or have YouTube show new videos or Twitch show how many people I'm following is broadcasting without needing to open the app first.

I'm really excited to have friend notifications back. I find it strange both next gen consoles launched without them, when everyone seemed to like them last gen.

I really hope this update includes fixes for the headset adapter. That thing is a mess right now.

Shit, what's wrong with it? I've been trying to track one down.

Would I be better off modding the included mono headset into an adapter, or does that have the same issues?

If you are going to have this pinning thing then you need to have the ability to order your pins. The fact that the only option is to "move to front" is amazing.

Another patch for the Beta Tier!

Sounds like us Tier 1 gamers in Scandinavia, Japan etc. are going to get a working console when it gets launched in our countries.

I'm glad the friend notifications are back, but I really wish there is an option to turn off the notifications when I'm using certain apps, specially when I'm watching TV of usinig Netflix. In Xbox 360 it was really distracting when these notifications showed up while I was watching a movie - it actually covered up the subtitles and my family was always complaining about it.

you could disable those quite easily when watching videos.

this update sounds very nice indeed.

I really wish Sony would figure out a game plan similar to this. M$ seems to be killing it with these monthly updates. I'd be cool with a slow, meaningful trickle of features. Just give me a timeline!

good news , but the party chat is still broken for me and my friends :(

It is for me as well.

I've got a friend in Titanfall and I tried to join him. I can join game, but not join party. So I assume he's not in a party, and instead I just send him a party invite. (not game, just party) He didn't get the invite, so he invites me, and I tell it to "join party and game." It brings me into the party, but not into the game. I see green circles next to both our names, but we can't hear eachother. After a minute or two, my party window tells me, "Try again later. Due to network limitations, you can't join party chat right now. (0x807d0106)"

I've been getting this every time I try to join or create a party. I've yet to successfully join a party since the March update. It went from confusingly complicated before the update, to 100% broken for me.
