Dark Souls II - Graphics Comparison - PC Preview

PC version compromised due to old consoles, the amount I'm willing to pay for it is equally compromised. Guess I'll be waiting for a cheap steam sale.

Yes FROM was really keeping the assets for the PC version despite the majority of their fan base being on consoles. Oh will you look at that PC version now :)

Excuse the image compression, but looks very good

Yikes, sorry PC guys, that's really disappointing.

Why? We get an excellent port.

Differences are very slight

You are buying PC for upgraded performance overall but this is the final game.

Damn shame we will never get the original vision but thats the way it goes in AAA

From Software is not a triple-A developer. Dark Souls II is not a triple-A game. they're a niche-level developer making niche-level games that just happened to explode in popularity because of stagnation in the market.

Something like Deus Ex or Tomb Raider PC ports are excellent.

This is just competent.

That's funny, because they used the same marketing schemes of triple-A development.

As a long time fan of the series, I think the influence of the console ports are apparent in BF4, graphics are the only thing not affected.

Also, Dice is a lot bigger than from and what they do in BF is important for Frostbyte in general - which justifies the extra work the PC version.
Ok, well how about Metro: Last Light? The Witcher 2? Neither developer is some huge studio, but they managed to make very impressive looking games, being led on PC.

I'm guessing that FROM simply lack a bit of talent when it comes to performance. Both Demon's Souls and Dark Souls had noticeable performance issues on last-gen consoles, despite being nothing particularly special in terms of graphics. I think developing on a new platform(PC) was probably biting off more than they could chew. I'm sure with more time, they could have done better, but as a first attempt, the result isn't very impressive.

This was the last hurrah for the last gen. Now we could look forward to whatever comes next while enjoying this.

I still believe PC was the lead as in all three games were based of a build developed on PC but like you said From is From and I think when it came down to it they made sacrifices across the board to get the game to work on the consoles and couldn't take more advantage of the PC. I really do think the initial demo is what they hoped to achieve and probably would have if they weren't held back by the older hardware.

They certainly received a AAA budget and resources

I think the time table deadline to release forced such compromises... or maybe the reveal demo was never attainable for the full game to begin with

I hope we get some developer commentary on this once the pot boils down. Will be very interesting

The cost of living and development for both 4A and CDPR is significantly lower than Japanese and American produced games.

The backlash and downgrades surrounding this have really soured me on picking this up right away. The game may be really good, but when you release details that are even better and use those details to generate interest, disappointment should be expected. I think I will wait to see if the modding community can do anything with this game.

All signs point to the quality of the PC port being excellent though.

So that begs the question, what the hell are you talking about?

Eh, I wouldn't call it "excellent". More like "competent".

I'd call it "excellent" if they included an SDK and Steam Workshop support or the like. There's really nothing about this port that's any better than your average PC console port.

So whats the bigger culprit?

Time? Money? Management?

Maybe they were just comfortable not focusing on hitting that previous target. Would have been a weight off any developers shoulders

Why? We get an excellent port.

Not really, see Hitman: Absolution or Sleeping Dogs for excellent ports.

here we got high res+ higher framerate port (no Nvidia techs, no lighting, nothing extra that add to the graphics options) so this is barebone and very basic port really.

You expected them to completely overhaul their lighting engine for a PC port?

Yeah, and in a month apparently. The perspective of a lot of people in these Dark Souls threads have really lost control.

We are now at a point where a PC version with more than double the frame rate, higher resolution textures, higher resoluition, AA, etc, is considered crap.

Did you guys play the network test? Did you not notice how freaking annoying it was having to use a torch everywhere? Want to use a shield? Too bad. Want to use a 2 handed sword? Too bad.

The old lighting system sucked ass from a gameplay perspective.

Look for me on the local news, I'll be the guy arrested for trying to burn down a Nintendo exec's house.
The dream is dead. Honestly I am absolutely gutted.

Guess this will forever be marked as "The B Team's Souls Game". Kinda looking for a big discount on the Steam version now, will have to scour for codes and whatever.

do you have evidence of this? because the game looks like every From Software game to date (i.e. - not a triple-A budget).

In this video the, some sconces don't give out dynamic lighting when lit.
I could have sworn that they do in the console version.
Maybe a glitch?

The port looks solid. No doubt. At least we don't require fixing up stuff this time.

I'm still pretty mad about the downgraded lighting and the misleading advertising with pretty pre-release footage.

Well congratulations! You got yourself caught!
Oh well, will wait for a Steam sale and hopefully a bunch of great mods before double dipping. The loadtimes coming off PS3 really are the most impressive change. Got accustomed to the framerate, but feels kind of wasted given how ugly the game can be in most cases.

FROM/Namco don't care about PC enough to use those assets (JP developers usually don't).

Or maybe the assets were never made for the entire game so the entire game was never going to look like that.

There's one interesting point there which clearly shows that the shadow resolution is higher on PC.

ds2d5u6q.png

So improved IQ, framerate, texture and shadow resolution.
(That shot also clearly shows higher texture res on the stones in the front btw.)

lol, PS3 is so blurry.

CD project took a year to port The witcher 2 and that was only to 1 console.

I don't know know enough about Metro's dev to comment really, but Metro is also a linear FPS of which a significant portion takes palce in tunnels. That helps a lot with visuals.

Not saying that these two devs aren't stronger technically, but there's different circumstances too.

Comparing it to From's past work? Yes, it is an excellent port.

Using well-funded, massive, and experienced teams to leverage an argument isn't really relevant.

Ahahaha

I'm sorry, but this really cracks me up.

All that "bu-bu-but wait for the pc version!" and here we are... Downgrade still firmly present.

So to all the people telling guys like me that I should have known better than to fall for media presented as console gameplay that was oh so very clearly the superior awesome pc version the whole time, I ask, what say you now!? Feeling a little stung, eh? Yeah, well, Welcome to March, glad you finally showed up.

I guess now this issue will become "real" since the glorious pc gamers got the shit end of the deceptive Sandwich too and not just us lowly console folk.

Hope everyone saved up for the ps4/xone version properly titled "Dark Souls 2: What was expected Edition" that will inevitably come out.

/still salty as fuck about downgrade

They delivered a better PC version than the "A team" and a great game overall. Damn shame that a lighting engine downgrade causes so much disrespect to a group of obviously talented people.
