Marty O'Donnell Fired By Bungie

Wow, surprising announcement. Bungie has been flying pretty low on the radar lately and then stuff like this and Joseph Staten jumping ship.

It will be interesting to see what Marty will do outside of Bungie though...

That's just insane! Marty was an essential part of what made Bungie games so great. I'd love to see him back on Halo, of course, but it would also be great to see him do something entirely different. In any case, best of luck to him finding a studio that better appreciates his talent.

At the same time, with both Marty and Staten now gone, I have to wonder what Bungie is turning into.

They better have a damn good reason for this, since he is one hell of a composer.

Halo's soundtrack was always top notch stuff.

My interest for Destiny just took a big hit right now.

We obviously need more information to make heads or tails of this situation, but I'm this close to not buying Destiny. This is unbelievable.

Wow, this came out of NOWHERE.

Bungie has huge guts (or Marty really messed up somehow) in order to do something like this. Marty's music is part of what made Bungie's games so iconic.

I hope he finds a place he likes. I'd love him back on Halo with 343...I didn't like Halo 4's music at all compared to the rest of the series.

No fucking way. :O :O

I mean, his work on Reach and Destiny (from the little I've heard) has been way below his incredible standards but that can't be it, he was practically one of the faces of Bungie.

WTF! He's been with Bungie for so long too!

There must be more to this story...potential celebrity composer replacement incoming?

Hard to speculate without any real info, but I think "without cause" implies that he wasn't at fault or didn't do anything to get himself fired. It might just mean that they didn't need him anymore.

he must of fucked up
Outside of some weird behavioral shit, I can't imagine what Marty Motherfucking O'Donnell could have done to get himself fired.

And disclaimer: I'm not suggesting Marty did some weird behavioral shit.

Microsoft, 343, do it.

I wonder what the politics behind the scenes are that, seemingly, no one at Bungie decided to give him a heads up about it? I hope he gets more work though, I love his music.

Gonna pour one out with the ODST soundtrackIt's my favorite. :)

Whoaaaaaaa. I think Marty is a total douche lord for using his influence to spread anti-abortion rhetoric on Twitter, but at the same time, the man is a talented genius! God damn. I'll really miss his piece of that Bungie magic, no matter how much I think his politics suck.
Didn't know this, this would be pretty stupid on his part.

On the one hand he is free to do whatever in his personal life, on the other hand, we know how people associate unrelated stuff, so it's understandable for Bungie to give him the boot, if he didn't stop when asked to.

All this being speculation of course.

I don't even know how to process this right now. There better be a damn good reason to let him go. The quality of his work speaks for itself.

that puzzling face
Just put Halo aside for the moment. I don't understand how this can happen, especially considering he's an integral part of Destiny's identity, and Bungie obviously are going to be doing that franchise for quite a while..

Not sure what their corporate structure is like, but it seems odd that it took an action of the board to fire him. That's something executives usually do. Unless they are one and the same.

What the Actual Fuck??!?

I'm listening to One Final Effort right now, entirely by coincidence, and this saddens me greatly!

Wait, really? Was this recent?

The music was one of the defining aspects of Halo for me. You can't say that about a lot of first person shooters. The only upside about this is if 343i picks him up and then Halo can sound like Halo again. This is a real bummer.

No, that's not what "without cause" means. WA (like many other states) has at-will employment, meaning you can quit your job without giving a reason and can be terminated without giving a reason.

bish gets all the credit :)
How many devs have in house composers these days? It seems the majority of soundtracks are farmed out. Maybe keeping a full time composer on board was no longer cost effective. Shame, i like his work but I'm sure he'll be picked up by somebody soon.

I truly can't believe this. I loved Marty's work in all of the Halos and was hoping to hear his new work in Destiny.

My heart goes out to him. 343, you know what to do.

I don't see anything on his twitter nor does Google bring up anything, so how about you explain.

I don't think it was his twitter.

Reading his timeline, he comes off like a total fool, but nothing "scandal" worthy and nothing at all recently (just some conservative talking points around the last election, some pretty lame Obama bashing attempts, and a Benghazi reference or two).

Could be that his Destiny work just wasn't up to snuff? Or maybe they decided that his material is too Halo derivative and wanted to go into another direction?

I can't even right now. This is crazy. And possibly great news for the Halo series. Bodes badly for Destiny. One can't help but wonder.

Yeah, Marty seemed like the exception given how a great majority of composers have gone freelance.

The only political stuff on his Twitter since last July are a few tweets about healthcare, unless they've been deleted.

Edit: Beaten several times.
