Marty O'Donnell Fired By Bungie

Holy shit, what a loss.

I know it's presumptuous, probably unjustly so, but I wonder if it has anything to do with his political views? He's pretty conservative from what I remember.

That's my hunch. He may have stepped over the line again and Bungie wasn't gonna have any more of it after his twitter fiasco...

I actually thought the soundtrack of Halo 4 was really excellent in a Casino Royale sort of way - I love how, like that movie and the Bond theme, Halo 4 doesn't actually feature the main iconic Halo theme, just ghostly snippets of it dancing in and out of other melodies. It's very clever. I'm not entirely sure I'd want Marty back on it.

Didn't know this, this would be pretty stupid on his part.

On the one hand he is free to do whatever in his personal life, on the other hand, we know how people associate unrelated stuff, so it's understandable for Bungie to give him the boot, if he didn't stop when asked to.

Wait, really? Was this recent?

I don't see anything on his twitter nor does Google bring up anything, so how about you explain.
It was over a year ago, maybe even two years. He and I argued about it on Twitter for a little bit. I can almost 100% say that it wasn't what got him fired. I mean really, there's no way it was. I only mentioned it cause it's the one (important) blemish on my otherwise unwavering love for the man.

Like... for real?
This is sad. Hopefully someone as talented as he is can find a job in no time. But still, fired for no reason? Awful. Just awful.

We aren't going to get an answer from Bungie as to why. This is between them and their (ex) employees. Privacy laws will cover it, so unless Marty goes public with reasons, we won't know.

And even if he did such a thing, it would only be half the story.

The reasons are not something that the wider audience are entitled to know
first case in years where entitled has been used in proper context in a gaming news comment

What?! Bungie should be kissing his feet for giving the Halo -franchise that distinctive, mysterious atmosphere... Those soundtracks are some of the best in gaming.

This is the worst news I've heard all year. Saddens me greatly. Not let go, not him leaving, but "terminated without cause."

What the actual fuck. Hype for Destiny and love for Bungie games has decreased greatly...Marty is the life blood of that studio and games.

I don't have them on hand, but I saw the tweets Kittens is talking about as well. But he hasn't made an overtly political tweet since November, so if this was over politics they sure took a hell of a long time to act upon it.

What really blows my mind is that Bungie left him, not the other way around... Like seriously, what could have happened?

They're the same thing.
"Terminated without cause" is firing. WA has at-will employment.
Thanks for clarifying, the more you know. Where I'm from you wouldn't really say someone was fired, unless they did something wrong, and lost their job as a consequence.
What makes you so certain he's an angel and Bungie must be villains for sacking him? People don't sack employees for fun and laughter.
I didn't say that at all :S All I said was that people don't get fired for no reason. And no of course they don't sack people for fun and laughter, it could be due to many different factors, no one is an angel or villain.

y'all should be ashamed

Two years ago?

You made it sound like it was last week. :p

If I would guess he crossed some line one too many times or just is too hard to work with (or in otherways dont fit in). Companies dont just fire people without a solid reason.

No offense, but if you're going to post something like that in this thread, why don't you tell us it was years ago? You essentially threw a hand grenade in this thread that's led to a lot of speculation already when he apparently has done nothing like that recently.

That seriously sucks. His music was a huge part of my love of Halo and part of the reason for my excitement for Destiny. Really strange and sad.
