I'll rock a pony avatar for 3 days if PS4 outsold XBO. That's how confident I am that it didn't.

Here you go mate. Resized and ready to go.

I'd really like to know how much Microsoft forked over for the Titanfall exclusive. It's hard to believe PS4 outsold the XBO in march.

The deal was inked before everyone knew what a success PS4 would be, so perhaps not that much on the initial deal.

I'll bet EA ain't too happy about it's end of the bargain.

Of course MS did spend a ton of money on deals and promotions with TF, so in the end the cost was still pretty high.

I'm not saying the sales gap is insignificant, but if both systems were at 5 million shipped, we'd be talking about how healthy the industry was.

So it's not like Xbone is doing poorly or anything IMO.

5 mil seems good in comparison to previous gens at the same point in time post launch, but going by 2014 1.1 mil shipped in 3 months is not an impressive figure at all.

While TF might appear to have been a waste of money, it is MS's biggest exclusive until Halo 5, which could be next October. They needed something, we don't know how bad XBO would be doing without it.

.

It really isn't. Sales are good but they have a direct competitor who released his hardware at the same time, going for the same audience. People are always going to compare it to PS4. A widening sales gap over time will probably influence some publisher/dev decisions.

The claim that Sony announced the 7 million figure yesterday for preemptive damage control seems really silly now.

Looks like Sony was aiming for a one-two punch.

They announced 6 million before the last NPD, I and others pointed this out but none listened.

It meant nothing but to inform that over 7 million people own PS4.

love on your sleeve
Titanfall did sell a fair amount of consoles but games can sell consoles long before they actually release. Case in point, I bought a Wii U at launch for Bayonetta 2 and that game doesn't even have a release date yet.

I would still love to be a fly on the wall at MS or EA right now though.

According to Polygon and others EA already made the decision that TF will be on PS4 next time around.

They won't make the same mistake twice.

In terms of numbers, no.

But it's not competing in a vacuum. Pretending that the PS4 doesn't exist isn't a viable option.

At some point, with low sales, people only buy the Xbox One for exclusives, since the PS4 runs them better, and gets more exclusives, as games will sell better on it.

And Microsoft can not survive on being the companion console. Their stable of IPs is a mess and their studios are in the single digits.

You can already see in the NPD software that the tide has shifted. By and large, the 360 games outsells the PS3, but the PS4 games outsell the XBO.

Also it's worth noting that multi console owners are less likely this generation to have XBLG, as paying for 2 subscriptions is a much bigger ask than paying for one and if multi plats are on the PS4, it makes sense which sub to pay for....

Bingo! ...... making multiplayer a PS+ feature might turn put to be one of the scrape test things Sony did this gen for this reason alone.

Do you really think MS will want to risk another 'but where are those other 900,000?' I don't think they can risk stuffing the channels in the same way.

Ok

Don't take that for granted because they were left with 900k unsold systems in December (shipped mostly in the US) and sales during the first quarter just haven't been strong enough to put them in a position to ship an other million units.
They're selling the system just in the US and UK at this point and even there the numbers are not really strong.
In fact I wouldn't be suprised if they announced cumulative shipments of 4.5m units by the end of March in their fiscal report. But we'll see of course ;)

Their shipped number didn't mention March so I'm guessing they didn't quite make the 5m in the quarter, but yes we'll see what the report says.

I'm sure we would know it would be doing pretty f'ing bad. I'm feeling Halo won't help either.

Titanic was called the Ship of Dreams, and it was. It really was.
Call me crazy, but I think things can still change greatly.

Is the PS4 not the most powerful console in the run? The most powerful console doesn't win, and I'm sticking to that. If the opposite happens, it will be highly unusual. Right now, the PS4 is selling to those early adopters, based mostly on specifications and promise, that will pass like gas. Even the PS2 had DVD as a killer application, before the real software kicked in. So we'll see what happens in the long run. I think the picture can change dramatically very quickly.

Wow so PS4 has sold 7 million compared to XBO's 5 million shipped. I only see the gap widening when The Last of Us remastered is released.

"playing" dumb? unpossible
So that now we know how much PS4 sold on NA last month, can we deduce EU numbers?

We can get a ballpark estimate. 1M WW sales - 371K March NPD, gives you the rest of the world. Remove Japan from the remaining figure using media create numbers, and the bulk of what's left is Europe.

The most powerful console has always been the most expensive, it's not like the mass market hates better technology.

The 'most powerful always loses' has been true of every generation, but performance itself has never been a determining factor I'd imagine. Obviously Sony is going to win this generation, but even that's not because of their performance advantage. MS poisoned the well with their anti-consumer Machiavellian maneuverings, their package has an inflated price because of Kinect, and worldwide, more people favor Sony.

Last time they had between a year and eighteen months head start, they had a huge price advantage, they had the better versions of multiplatform games, and they still came last by the end of it.

The "most powerful always loses" argument usually stems from that console being the most expensive. The fact that that same console has a large price advantage this gen makes a massive difference.
