I think there are many factors that go into determining why certain characters get in and others don't. Popularity and gameplay potential being a big one but I do think surprise factor is one. Greninja seems slightly random, not that im complaining. If series relevancy was a sole factor we wouldve gotten Toad in by now instead of Rosalina. Im rather surprised Sakurai hasn't gone with Tingle to be honest. Hes had several spin off games and has been a recurring Zelda character and he seems to have that quirky charm Sakurai would find funny to put in the game.
Im still bitter about Midna and Wolf Link being a playable character.

I think that he's trying to tease things, and tell us indirectly that he still has some stuff up his sleeve, rather than just outright fuck with us.
Sakurai is a benevolent troll. His trolls are funny, not cruel.
I can agree with that, but those of us who want Ridley have been publicly humiliated 6 years ago. No need to make this a repeat of Brawl, especially not after all the cockteasing Sakurai has been doing.

You may have missed it, but folks posted popularity polls for XY, and Greninja is on top of them all.
So Palutena and Chrom are the only newcomers related to the trophies? That doesn't make any sense. Tingle hasn't been shown as an assist trophy so that's my first logical guess. But then again, "Toon Zelda" on the Brawl disc; that leads me to question what to pick. For the Metroid trophy... it's obvious.
I'm sure the trophy series' were chosen for a reason. Doesn't necessarily mean newcomers, I agree, but you know he sat down and mulled over which four out of the many possible trophies he should show.

I want Ridley in, I can empathise with his fans, and will happily be wrong on the minuscule chance he ends up playable, but people that post snarky stuff like this,
I just cannot feel sorry for and will enjoy the tears of when he gets shown off as a Pyrosphere boss.
Masahiro Sakurai is the patron saint of not making sense. Expecting a newcomer from each of the four trophy segments is the immediately logical assumption to make -- but Sakurai isn't immediately logical. He knows we get worked up over everything, and he wouldn't just "spoil" four newcomers so easily. He's always one step ahead of us.

I didnt miss it. However there are a lot of pokemon that are popular and usually more marketed and focused on in merchandising and the anime that miss the boat in Smash to let Greninja in over lets say Blaziken who has maintained popularity for 10+ years does seem like a choice not entirely dictated by popularity. Its a factor but there are other elements at play, imo.

Well, when that happens, Sakurai will probably talk about Ridley as a character. Just like the Samus section of Direct, he will let us know if he is a character or not at that time. At least, I hope he wouldnt leave it unsaid.

Last night at chow, Smash GAF starts talking about some space pirate and how he would be in the next Smash Bros. I told them I didn't believe in fairy tales like that, and they took it personal. I just find it hard to believe that one reoccuring boss from a franchise could be playable, that's all. But if they want to believe in this Ridley, or Bigfoot, or Santa Claus, they can.

They'll work together. Alfonso flaps the wings while Salvatoro (who undoubtedly looks like his ancestor Salvatore) sits on Al's shoulders wearing a purple bird beak, throwing random items at the fighters and shouting things like "Keh-boom!" and "Spleursh"

My god...I cant believe I havent speculated this earlier, theres no reason for sakurai to take out the waddle dees in deedeedee's moveset, he could have just buffed the move. Guys...I think kirby is getting it's 4th member

The trophy quizzes are not hints at newcomers.

Waddle Dees are enemies in Smash Run, and they're probably still included in Dedede's Final Smash. Sakurai seems to be removing some of the random elements from characters, and since Gordos are the most powerful of Dedede's minions, it makes sense to throw them over Waddle Dees.

I think the Palutena trophy was definitely a nudge towards the fans. Whether or not it means she's coming is undecided. She's one of the more requested characters, and the way the trophy tease was edited indicated it might be her, until the reveal.
I agree that Ridley is probably a boss/stage hazard, but again, showing his shadow does imply that Sakurai is at least having fun with the expectations of the audience.
As for Pac-Man, the game is developed by Namco, he's already been in Mario Kart, and there's certainly room for one more third-party character or surprise. He's got a good shot.

I'm with someone who said earlier that the trophy section might just have set up the "Palutena" fake out. Yknow, to establish a trend a break the mold with that fake out as a hint.
The Fi trophy throws me off. I don't see Demise or Ghirahim showing up.
Just Ganondorf and MAYBE tetra or tingle.
However with the inclusion of Rosalina and Greninja I think Ghirahim is sounding a bit more... Likely to catch me off guard.

cool, I'm not the only one who thought of this. lol. Imo, the direct did show signs that Sakurai knows Ridley is still a highly requested character. It will only be a matter of time until we find out the truth :] At this point I don't feel strongly either way but I'm rooting for the Ridley guys.

Well with Palutena coming in as well from Kid Icarus, that'd give Sakurai 6 characters. Clearly he needs to add Hades as well
Sakurai is taking out many random elements from characters (Olimar's Pikmin being in a fixed order, for example).
Besides, the Waddle Dees are in Smash Run.

I'll just assume third-party characters like Mega Man and Sonic will be unlockable again since they're begging to be a "Challenger Approaching" fight. Now that Zero Suit Samus and Sheik are their own characters, it might be safe to say they along with Toon Link will be in the starting roster. So that leaves 27 characters, five of which would be newcomers. Melee's starting roster had 10 veterans to 4 newcomers; Brawl with 13 veterans to 9 newcomers. With 27 characters to play with, SSB4 would have 22 veterans to 5 newcomers. I'm gonna go out on a limb and say 3 newcomers (not including Pac-Man) are set for E3 this June bringing the starter total to a nice, rounded 30.

I think it's because of the unique properties of the projectile he uses. In the little clip of him in the Direct they show that he has the lightning bolt from MM1, where he shoots it and it then splits into three projectiles (one continuing forward, one going up, one down). That's a fairly original attack shape.
