STEAM | April 2014 - Insert witty title here.

I have to wonder what a developer's thought process is when they add 15 steam trading cards to their game. Do they think that it will lead to an increased number of market trades and thus higher profit for them? Because that sure as shit doesn't happen. The number of people who are interested in completing 15 card sets must not even be in 3 figures, globally. Instead you get a situation where each of the trading cards sells for 3-5 cents on the first day after release.

Even more baffling is when it's a game where they developer had to give out free copies to bribe people to vote for it on Greenlight.

I gave up for good yesterday, when I couldn't get the game to run (which is weird, because it worked fine last time I tried it, a few months ago). I didn't enjoy the 10 or so hours I put into it at all.

I can see it's a well crafted game, but it's not for me. I'm not a fan of frustrating games (I can count the exceptions with one hand), and this game's goal in life is making mine living hell.
not really, it does try to mess up with you and annoy you but it is very explicit in that there is a way to play the game and if you try to sideline that then you're gonna get fucked. if you play by its rules you won't get eaten by mimics or step into traps or get ambushed by hollows up of the wazoo

sometimes it can be kind of bullshit, but for the most part if you play the game how it's meant to be played you're seldom frustrated and you can always summon a sunbro to help you out if you're stuck (less so in dks1 than dks2 tho).

I hope they can do something regarding GFWL and make the game much more functional. If you ever decide to give one last try this could help. ;)

I'm not good at games, really. Hard difficulty is not for me and I'm horrible and any sort of platforming/jumping to point A to point B but I can honestly say thay 99% of the time I died on Dark Souls 1 was because:

- I was not patient
- I did not studied my enemy
- I got too much confidence

Too much games these days hold your hand for so much time that when I tried a game that did not gave me a constant green arrow to point my objective all the time and ultra weak enemies I felt the game was "hard" but it was not, it's all about your own perception and understanding how patience is key and being clever makes you proceed in the game. With that in mind, I managed to finish Demon's Souls and later on Dark Souls. Right now on Dark Souls II, I had plenty of deaths and again, 99% of the time was because I was too greedy and decided to swing my sword just one more time or I was not fully aware of my surroundings.

With that being said, these games are not for everyone and I understand, however, never a sense of risk-reward felt so good like when playing a Souls game. Specially when this is coming from someone who is not good at harder games.

This weekend I played more of Dark Souls 1.
I keep going guideless for this game :)

Okay, so I killed those pesky Bell Gargoyles and somehow managed to get a nifty Axe out of the tail of one of those.
Went under the blacksmith and killed... uhhh.. something that only had one leg.
Made my way trough this ugly forest and killed some Ents, took a detour and found myself killing a Black Knight on a risk ledge, it was a cool fight. Got into a elevator and reached a place called "Valley of the Drakes". That wasn't a good idea.
Reached back and killed some weird ass golems, and saw some kind of hydra farther, but the water kept me from getting there fast enough. I will come back later.
Traced back, killed more Ents and thanks to a fire message found out a hidden bonfire behind a wall. Took a breath off.
Went further, killed more Ents and found a path after "killing" a tree. Remember to hit trees from now on. Found myself on forest with stone giants sleeping, those bastards hit hard! also they cast slow on me. I killed them. Found a secret path after killing another tree and slayed some weird frog things and a couple more of those stone giants, reached all the way back to a soul I couldn't reach before, it gave me a Wolf Ring that improves "Poise". What the hell is poise?.
Turned back and cleared all the forest, found out a fog door atop a tower.
I feel a boss nearby. The bastard will bite it today.

It was a good weekend.

Nice. It seems like you're getting the hang of things.

Vangers uses voxel graphics; the engine was built around that resolution as such, so higher resolutions would require a lot of work not necessary to enjoy the game.

I've bought it after reading through the developer's old and new websites, which respectively have a glossary and a condensed backstory for the Vangers universe. Game looks fucking crazy: top-down car combat CRPGs taking place in truly alien, unforgiving environments? With hillbilly techno music? It only cost me 3 bucks and a half, and I feel confident in the buy. The devs are active on the game forum as well, which is a good sign of things to come.

Apologies! Thanks for the correction. Definitely sounds much cooler than I first supposed.

Last Bastille is what I did first out of those.

Just explore, it really doesn't matter.

I would suggest finishing off Prison and Sinner's, then moving onto Huntsmans.

For example, Rhanknar any I were roughly keeping pace in terms of progression, and I assume, Soul Level. At one point I ventured off far in a random direction into a place he had never seen before.

That's kind of what I'm doing... but I'm just wondering if one is advised or something because I'd find the method for upgrading weapons better
McDuff needs his ember still, apparently
. And I know that somewhere there's a throwback to both Dark and Demon's with
freeing an NPC who is a pain in your ass
.

So far, I've been spending a lot of time helping people and killing intruders into the Belfry Luna.

McDuff is going to be needing his ember for a long ass time.

That is my favorite covenant so far.

Yeah, it's definitely a throwback to the one for protecting the Forest. :)
I keep wondering if I've come across any GAFers in my travels in Drangleic... since, y'know, you see character name, not Steam name when you encounter.

FYI, if you're looking for me, my character is Frost.

The game is averaging 40,000-60,000 people on every second, good luck!

For you.
Good point, but it's still better than having a character's face cut off or whatever.

Yep!

Regarding Dark Souls, I will say that it took me about 10 hours and being shelved for months before I was able to get everything to click. After that, I was hooked.

Took a lot less time for Dark Souls 2.

Thanks guys.

Happy birthday creeper. Hope you make some new gifs for us :D.

Gentlemen, we can rebuild it. We have the capability to make the world's first enhanced store. Steam will be that store. Better than it was before.
Hey Jshackles -- how goes the standalone ES development?

I just saw the ES icon in the bottom of Bernardo's screen and it made me wonder.

Slowly. I really need to build a good virtual machine for each version of Enhanced Steam's development. It actually takes a good bit of time to get everything set up so that I can even make changes to the code and test it.

That said, I plan on working on the next version of the standalone ES after I release version 6.1 for Chrome (probably later this week?)

Out of curiosity, how do you all use your categories in your library?

I'm on 140 games now and have them separated into Favourite, Installed and the default Games. Is it worth putting them into genres or years or anything like that?

I tried putting 'em into genres, it was a nightmare cuz I had 430 games (so much sub genres) so I changed 'em back to as seen in the image above.

I leave all games I have yet to play and beat unsorted. They are there, asking me to place them in a category and have a sense of order to them.

When I've beaten a game or just feel finished playing it, I put it in genre type categories. For example Half Life 2 is in the First Person Shooter, Portal and Mirror's Edge are in First Person Other, Left 4 Dead 2 is in Multiplayer, Pinball FX is in Pinball, Finding Teddy is Adventure Store, Kairo will be sent to Adventure Explore, AaAaAA!!!! is in Sport Non-Traditional, Mark of the Ninja is Stealth, Scribblenaughts is a Puzzle, and so on and so forth. With a few specific categories for things like Don't Work for titles that won't run on modern systems or my current set-up.
My genre uses aren't the same as the average person, but it works for me as they are based around what type of game play they be or what type of game feel a title goes for (e.g. Shelter is all about playing for survival for example).

For me I get a satisfaction in feeling complete with a game and then seeing it go home to sit alongside others of it's type.

Though quite honestly I don't need the categories other than the "Don't Work" one, as every time I go to play a game I just search for it to get to it right away.

Favorite (obvious)
Endless (games that have no real ending to them)
Episodic (games with multiple parts like Monkey Island and Back to the Future)
Finished (games where I reached the credits)
Games (obvious)

I should probably add 1 or 2 more, but I'm happy with what I got now.

I don't have many games, I'm currently on 103 so I've currently got it set up as Windows, Mac and Non Steam games. As my library expands more, I imagine that I will create more specific categories.

That's a great idea, gives you an excuse to play the ones you wouldn't think of trying just to see if it could fit in a category.

Pretty self explanatory, the A's and Z's is just to force categories to the top and bottom of the pages.

Junk is stuff like Mac versions, superseded games that I have the new version of (Arkham City, DE:HR) and betas. Games at the bottom is the default one where games that haven't been categorised sit until I can be bothered to move them. Might add a broken category at some point as there are a couple of games I just can't get to run.

I had the same experience except with Demon's Souls. I shooed it off multiple times over a few months before giving it a legit chance. It's definitely a game that can easily discourage you when starting, but man after it clicks, it's really satisfying.

I always wait to attack if there is another person or engaging an NPC. I haven't seen anyone else in the Covenant following these principles however.

Now if the fight is heavily in their favor, IE they are just flat out better than me by a wide margin, I will use whatever means are at my disposal.

I don't post much ITT since it moves way too fast now but i still owe gaf a little bit after the christmas sale. Enjoy.

Aye, that was one of my main reasons for starting it, besides helping me to figure out a way to classify something, it's helped me pay attention and appreciate the game mechanics and presentation more.

Helped me come up some categories to use for the odder stuff as well, such as The Wonderful End of the World (and other titles like Katamari Damacy) I now call Pick-Em-Ups.

Gary's Mod - Never really sure where to put this one!

Sandbox is how I would do it. It is, after all, just playing around with a lot of toys however one wants and what their imagination allows them to do.

i'm fair against red phantoms i summon, it's just that covenant that really annoyed me cos i kept getting invaded while running to the boss and they couldn't just have the decency to wait for me to finish off the little blue dudes

I like the idea of "Endless".
The categories I have are:
  • 2nd Run
  • Backlog
  • Done
  • Mac
  • Multiplayer
  • Playing
  • Games
Since managing categories in Steam is a chore, I haven't done so in forever so there is a lot of stuff in "Games"... I also should totally add a "Crap" or "Garbage" category.

While not a fan of golf myself, Worms Crazy Golf has been rather enjoyable to me. Being on a 2D single plane with other goals such as collecting all the coins help it out quite a bit as a title to casually play.

That and making other worms explode is enjoyable.

Fairway Solitaire , golf via Klondike card game, would be nice to have on Steam as well someday.

This post is very very good, though I wouldn't expect anything different coming from you. I admit I don't have the patience required for this game, and that for me is the hardest obstacle to overcome. I get extremely frustrated extremely fast (this doesn't apply only to games, but to every other aspect of my life too), and that makes me drop the game and never come back, completely sure that I will never be able to beat it. That, coupled with the fact that I couldn't feel myself getting better at it, was a recipe for disaster, and probably the main reason why I couldn't enjoy the time spent playing it.

I don't know what I need to do for the game to click with me. I'd like it to happen, but it seems really improbable at this point. But yeah, if the game ever starts working again, I think I'm gonna try it again. Or get DS2 once it sells for $5 (but not a single cent more!)

not really, it does try to mess up with you and annoy you but it is very explicit in that there is a way to play the game and if you try to sideline that then you're gonna get fucked. if you play by its rules you won't get eaten by mimics or step into traps or get ambushed by hollows up of the wazoo

I wouldn't worry: the flag's been present since the sub popped up a month ago. If it were a mistake, it would've been fixed by now.
