New Destiny Gameplay

That seems like a really silly request considering the beta will be out before September.

Just watch one of the thousands of people that will stream it if you really need to see that much of the title that early.

Look, you can feel free to wait x amount of time for the beta to finally get announced, and then x amount more time to watch streamers play the beta. Personally though, I'd like to see some footage of the game now, that amounts to more than "here's another 5 minute mission video of a group of players shooting a bunch of enemies in cramped interiors".

This game is supposed to release in 5 months, and we've not really seen more than a small handful of 2-7 minute videos that show guys shooting enemies in pretty cramped enviroments. That's just insane for a game of this scope. Only game developer that I have seen show less of their AAA game at this stage is rockstar.

Shh.. Dont tell them all this. Let them wallow in the pre-conceived notions that the whole game is generic and boring based off of a portion of a Strike mission.

The crows a cookin.

Yup. Just wait. The crow eating will be fun to watch. Actually reminds me of the doubt of Halo before it came out. Yet we all know how amazing that turned out.

There are three classes that are distinguished more by their "supers" and appearance than they are by the weapons you carry. The weapons serve a purpose, but the real fireworks (and oomph) come when you drop in and unleash a super and decimate several enemies. I can hear friends already yelling and sharing those moments together over chat (and hopefully via the Share button) come September.

Yes hopefully then playstation can make it into a commercial...

Do you work for playstation?

The rational people are gonna judge the game based on what has actually been shown of the game. And so far that has been the small portions of missions in videos that kinda look the same gameplay wise. What the guy you quoted said sound fucking awesome, and I hope the game actually is like that. But it just makes me wonder why the fuck bungie isn't showing something like that with such a short amount of time left before the game is supposed to relase. Because they need to show that.

If someone changed the intro screen to Borderlands 3 and said they aren't doing cell shading on next gen I would believe them.

You should apply for a job at IGN.

And GTA V delivered.

At this point I don't think everything needs to be spelled out for the player. I'm not super interested in this game, but I reserved my judgement on it because Bungie is known to make quality shooters.

They want to reinvent the wheel when it comes to emergent shooters, and likely that comes with the feeling to hold some things close to their chest. If you make something special you cook it until it's ready, not show it half baked.

If the game ends up being fantastic, it will only make this trailer seem even more baffling.

Some of you have a really weird idea of fun. Are you honestly going to get on people's case for reacting to marketing footage? As opposed to the quality time that almost nobody here has had to sit down with the game in its current state?

The reason footage like this exists is so that people can make judgments about the game as a whole - to (hopefully) develop a hype train and spread interest - the fact that reactions can include negative judgments always seems to drive others nuts though, and its bewildering to watch unfold, each and every time.

Must be the 360 version otherwise holy shit at dat downgrade, no shadows man, what the hell. Gameplay looks fairly generic, it's going to be a huge flop for Activision, I don't what they are expecting from a Borderlands clone.

I would argue that Bungie is saving all of its best footage for E3. Let's face it, E3 is the biggest advertising and marketing moment for any game. Why reveal everything beforehand when you can keep on teasing everyone with information to keep them excited. Bungie knows what they are doing, they have been doing this for awhile.

The reactions to this are confusing me. I didn't see anything bad, but I didn't see anything particularly fresh either. If the game is like borderlands then that's cool cause I loves me some borderlands, but if it's a lot more than that then I didn't see it.

Or they could just be waiting for the beta to speak for itself.

I personally disagree that GTA 5 delivered, but that's a seperate issue.

The point is that bungie isn't doing a good job of selling people on their brand new IP yet. The lukewarm reactions to this footage is all the proof you need of that. So instead of keep on showing the same kind of videos that aren't gonna have an effect on people. How about showing something new? Crazy idea, I know.

I kinda think so as well based in the E3 note at the end of this footage.I dunno, I'm just frustrated at how they've handled the pr for this game so far. I mean it's just been a weird process from the beginning almost. The part where bungie invited journalists from all over the world to their studio, only to not show anything from the game to the press other than a short trailer. And just spend the rest of the time telling them about destiny is just incredibly strange as a form of PR imo. And since then it's mainly just been about telling people about how amazing it is, only to not back that up with footage.

So I downloaded the Gamersyde footage and I noticed details I didn't see the first time.

  • -The first groups of enemies (Fallen Dreg and Hive Acolyte) in the encounter are pretty weak. They seem like the Grunts of the respective races.
  • -Mixed in there are some Hive Knights (level 10), which appear to be tougher and take longer to kill (except what we see of them has them getting shot by multiple players at once, so they still go down fairly fast).
  • -Once inside, we see more Dreg and Acolyte's, though these are Level 6 and weaker than those we saw outside. From the written reviews, we know the players are level 8, so it makes sense that they're going down pretty quick.
  • -Some new enemy types show up (Fallen Vandal, Fallen Wizard, and Fallen Captain). They're still level 6 and get killed pretty easily.
  • -Once Ghost's hack sets off an alarm, we begin to see stronger and more varied enemies. We've got some kind of Stealth Fallen sniper, and Fallen Captain's that appear to use positional shields of some type.
  • -Around the time that Mesh 2 is deactivated we see Stealth Vandals, which close the distance on the Titan and attempt to gank him from behind through melee. The Warlock saves him with his Nova.
  • -Hive Thralls show up and swarm the player (I believe the Titan?) with coordinated leaping melee attacks and down him. The Warlock clears them out with another Nova and resurrects him.
  • -A Hive Wizard shows up and has a Shield meter at the top of his life bar, The Titan and an unseen Guardian unload on him, dropping his shield, then the Titan hits him with his Heavy Weapon (a Rocket Launcher) killing him instantly.
  • -A named Hive (Naksis, Devil Baron) shows up. He can teleport and has what appears to be a directional shield. The Warlock switches to his heavy weapon and unloads on him with the Hunter (while the shield appears to be facing away) and kills him.

Gameplay does seem a bit slow but it also seems like the players spend a lot of time walking around at normal speed rather than sprinting. They also seem to make some odd targeting choices at times. Edits and cuts from one Guardian viewpoint to another makes it difficult to really discern the pace of the fights at times. Overall though, looking at the footage a bit closer showed me a bit more about the enemy types. I'm still left wondering though, if it would've been better to have Level 6 Guardians for this playthrough. Can't tell if it would've made the encounters feel a bit more balanced in terms of difficulty.

It looks like some sort of amalgamation between Halo, Warframe, and Borderlands. Still, I'm glad we're finally getting more footage, but I want to see the open-worldness of it; the ships, vehicles, etc.

"It looks like Borderlands" kinda does it a disservice. I would love to play Borderlands with better level design, encounter design, AI, gunplay, music, storytelling, and UI. If this is that, that is like pointing to some pinot noir and saying, "It looks like grape juice."

I say this as someone who genuinely thinks Borderlands is trash.

I mean it's not like we're going to know until we get to play it (well, unless you're a journalist or something). As of now though, I haven't seen anything that makes it seem like it's significantly better than Borderlands so far. I mean I'm still probably going to get it day one and everything, but nothing is screaming "GROUNDBREAKING" to me quite yet.

Yup. Also if you notice there are plenty of cuts too. So we're not getting to see everything that the players encounter. You'll also notice that some of the camera angles are obviously dev cams. They did the same stuff with Bungie footage in the past too. I'd bet money that they probably cut some stuff so as not to show their entire hand. We have to realize that this is just the beginning of the train rolling. I would be shocked if the real goods don't hit at E3.

I agree also it's very frustrating, I think the PR move very awkward where they restricted journalists and probably have them play just 1 strike over and over.

I am still excited for the game but I want more.

.

The lukewarm reaction is not just from the fan base, but also journals, which I understand. I never stated their marketing was a success, but that the limited showing seems to correlate with their statement on how this will change the way players play shooters together.

They're likely partially fumbling in marketing due to just really not wanting to show anything until e3 or near beta and release.

They feel they have the right with this creation, and I give them the benefit of the doubt being Bungie and all.

Personally, I know I'm going to love the game. I also know I'm fast at lowering my expectations. The game looks like Halo with a nice scoop of rpg, which is fine. But it really looks like there has been no attempt to innovate or even change in the combat department(more specifically gunplay, the skills are pretty cool). Which once again isn't bad considering I love the combat in Halo, but I think a lot of us were hoping for more. Fluidity in movement needs improvement, weapon feedback needs improvement. The animations and general look of the game are so familiar to Halo that nothing feels new. I'm sure the rpg aspects will contribute into making the game more in-depth and multi-layered than Halo, which is what I believe was missing from Halo campaigns.

Basically. I'm fine with the footage, Bungie is probably still teasing the hell out of us, but I can't say I wasn't expecting a little more in certain areas.

Maybe it's silly, but I want the game to look like the atmosphere in this concept art at one point.

Some cool parts, but overall the gameplay video was just decent. Not much there to set it apart from other shooters. I was more impressed with a couple of the older gameplay videos (from last year).

Still on the fence about Destiny.

Well said. I hope that it feels better to play that it looks (gameplay not graphics). I love the ways enemies react in Halo and I would be supremely disappointed if Bungie didn't nail the combat in this game.

I went back and reread this post and was like "huh, yeah, that's... not a bad post. You go, me!" I don't normally do that, but I'm legit proud of some posts I've made tonight. Anyways...

The big non-Halo example I have of this is FEAR. You hit guys with a grenade, and it'll knock 'em over. If they were far enough away, they'll get up, but they're wounded, and they'll start limping away. Having different "states" is a great way to explain what's going on visually, without a stupid health bar.

DeeJ is on Guardian Radio's podcast right now on Twitch, and said that Destiny will be playable at E3. Also said the Beta will be after E3.

As did the footage in the OP, no?

we'll probably get that one in some area or some planet.

they've only shown old russia extensively, so far. it'd be naive to think there wouldn't any variety at all with the environments.

Wow that impression is amazing. I'm actually worried about finding 2 other PS4 players who will be willing to team up with me every time I come on line since I will be a senior in college and my schedule won't allow for much gaming (back in high school I would game 4-5 hours a week day, 10+ on weekends) now I only get to game 1-2 days on week days and 3-5 on weekends if I'm free. I'm assuming I will just be finding firequads that will have working professionals who have normal 9-5 jobs.

It's a 7 minute snapshot of a quick runthrough, in a situation and mission of which context we're unaware of. It's a glimpse of a part readied for beta-testing. I'm not sure how people can make such grand statements as "graphics be shit", "music be shit", or "gameplay be shit". Still...

I shall.

Looks smooth.
Looks fun.
There be loot there be. Arr.

But. Please oh please be a splitscreen. Borderlands 1&2's main thing for me and our boy was just that.

Looks like some of the impressions from the sites are kinda... Bad.

Hype officially dead.

It looks to me that they got, what, 45 minutes playtime? My question is, who at bungie let this happen? That's not enough time for a solid understanding of this type of game. How much were they able to mess with their loot? If it is anything like skyrim as mentioned previously, getting through a single side area may be about all you would see in that time. And honestly, that's what it looked like.

Don't worry, GAF will always have people wanting to party up. When the OT for the game is up just pop in and post your PSN name and ask for people to play with and you're set.

Nothing too special tbh. Seems kinda dumb actually. Why are these super future space marines using guns and sights that look like they can fit in the latest COD? Also post Titanfall I notice movement in FPSes more than I did before and this seems so...dated.

It's not looking bad per se but I find the hype levels surrounding this weird as fuck considering it seems to be lacking anything that really sets it apart besides Bungie on the box.

Eh, the video is not capturing me and the Destructoid preview was kind of sour. I can definitely see the appeal from a loot grind perspective, but that doesn't interest me too much at this point.

TBH it doesn't look challenging at all. Like Borderlands, how long can you kill the same mindless bots over and over in the same linear misson. How will you not be bored with this after the initial run through.

I'll wait for H-Hour. Playing against players has spoiled me.

It's not a good thing when so many of the reactions to what they've choosen to show thus far are not exactly that of great excitement.

I just noticed this quote in the bring destiny to PC thread

Parsons also said creating and releasing a PC version of Bungie's shared world shooter would not be as easy as many believe, because all versions of the game connect to the same persistent video game world, which itself extends to multiple platforms.

"It is not nearly as simple as you think," he said. "It is one central world no matter what the platform, and so that requires lots of intensive thought.

"Frankly, it's not a thought we can spend time thinking about right now. Just building up the game and putting it across generations of platforms, and working on platforms we've never worked on before with the PlayStation 3, these are very big challenges. I'm thankful we have the engineering team we do."

Does this mean possible cross platform multi ? that would be pretty awesome to let xbone,ps players play together .

Destiny looks like a hollow, less focused version of Halo when it comes to enemy encounters and gunplay. Enemy AI doesn't seem too hot either, based on how much carnage is happening and there being no clear direction in battle. What Bungie was aiming for seems to be something more appealing to non Halo fans while relying on Halo fans to jump in.

And before I get flak, let me explain. Halo 1-3 single player is incredibly focused design wise. Levels feel like encounters stringed together, with different adversaries, weapons, vehicles, and area sizes for battling. Now Bungie just didn't throw shit at the wall and watch to see if something stuck, different weapons influence the speed and tone of the battle. Enemy types cause the player to reevaluate where to attack and when. Halo 1 and Halo 3 on Legendary is unmatched regarding pacing and how different each encounter feels.

Destiny looks like Firefight mode with a XP system tacked on. The encounters seem devoid of tension and skill. Shoot everything and spam your powers in the middle of battle. At the end of a long battle in Halo 3 you look at all the corpses around you and feel relieved, depressed, satisfied. At the end of a battle in Destiny? " *Yawn, alright guys lets move to the next room, maybe we'll get some sweet loot".
