I get the impression from Nintendo's discussions of their future architecture that they want to dump 3DS as soon as possible. Everything they invest in it will be deadweight within a few years.

It actually makes me think of them focusing on different things and leave the 3DS be, considering it's they're only safe bet at this point. It's the one thing they have that's doing well.

my bet is:

- QoL fitness based system thingie
- cheaper WiiU revision
- this rumor is bs

there's no way they'll fragment the 3DS even more

I hope it's a home console that can be competitive.

I think NeoGAF won't survive if Wii 4K is a stronger machine than the PS4/xbone

come on guys

I'd highly welcome the 3DS successor. Isn't it about the same period between the GBA launch and the DS unveiling?

Sorta, but I doubt the release will line up with the DS as that would mean it would come out this year. The GBA was 3 and a half years old when the DS came out while the 3DS is a little over 3 years old now. A mid-late 2015 release for the next handheld would give the 3DS a longer life than the GBC or GBA.

I'm guessing QoL.

I'd actually be really (unpleasantly) surprised if we even saw a new Wii U or 3DS model. Judging by their January Investor's meeting there are absolutely no new plans for a Tabletless Wii U and they already have three 3DS models on the market, they really don't need to crowd the market more by releasing ANOTHER model with an Apple-esque strategy of new versions every year.

If it were a 3ds revision, I'm calling something to replace the base 3ds. They've never had a ds lite equivalent for this gen. They made a bigger "luxury" model that some people find uglier and less comfy. They made a budget model that is perceived as even more of a toy than usual. The ds lite was a miracle that simultaneously got cheaper and made the thing cooler.

At a gaming event?

The QoL platform will probably be something that tries to use gameplay to get people to improve whatever metrics it tracks, no? It's not like they're gonna make their own version of Nike's fitbit thing, or a line of shirts with respiration sensors embedded in them, or something else random and utterly unrelated to the source of all their business for decades. Nintendo has shown before that they will totally not hesitate to show game content that hardcore gamers think is dorky at e3. Sheer scale of the event alone would get the mainstream press's attention to some extent anyway.

Two things:

1) It's not doing well. They were already moving to DS at this point in GBA's lifespan, and GBA was selling better than 3DS is! (Not to mention that GameCube was profitable.)

2) If they are really invested in the account-based, multi-device, single-platform future, they have no choice but to make sure the execution is perfect. That means they can't waste time and resources on their non-future-proof platform.

why would they create a 3ds successor? 3ds is still doing well. lots of great games still coming out for it. doesn't make sense.

Well, I'm not suggesting that I believe they'd announce a successor at E3, but I do think it's worth noting that it's not really doing that well. That's not to say that it's tanking or anything, but it's hardly sunshine and roses unless you're only looking at it from the perspective of "it's kicking the shit out of the Vita!"

As Nintendo's marketing of MK8 is specifically aimed at quelling talks about lack of horsepower, I doubt this is a new console. At the most this is referring to the QoL, as a new handheld is a little too early, especially when the software sales are really starting to pick up.

If the source is to be believed, and that third parties know about it, that would imply that it in some way changes the development landscape. I think that rules out a 3DS hardware revision.

It is too early for new systems. So that leaves us with a hardware revision that alters development of future games.

Maybe it is a tually is a gamepad-less Wii U revision.

What are we 31 days away from their E3 video?

I assume this is, if it's true, either QOL or some improved Wii U (more RAM), with standalone expansion for those that already own the system. Or, maybe it's an entirely new handheld like the one that patent was talking about (interchangeable controls).

almost, but it's a pretty outdated way to look at things. Console cycles have changed drastically. the DS lasted 7 years.

You also have to realize that the DS was one of a kind. It was able to have a long cycle because it's competition (PSP) wasn't able to steal the limelight from it, so it went similar to how the PS3 and x360 did. Longer cycle than normal, but it was allowed because there was no real competition from new hardware at the same time in a normal cycle
