IGN Rumor: Nintendo Revealing New Hardware at E3 [Up: MCV + Videogamer]

1) They did exactly that with GBA in 2004. And they were in a better position then than they are with 3DS and Wii U. When you need to get your business on track, you take drastic measures. For Nintendo, that meant DS and Wii. Today, it could mean fast-tracking the move to a multi-device architecture that lets them salvage their Wii U software efforts (Iwata says the new architecture will be based on Wii U for maximum future proofing) without the hardware execution issues.

2) Not necessarily. The iPhone didn't come out at the same time as the iPad, for instance.

The bolded scares me because the tiny bit I know of computer architecture does not make it seem like the WiiU architecture is the best thing to be stuck with long-term.

I just think the whole idea they're trying to convey lately requires a shift on all fronts. On one point you say they have to drop everything and drastically change and on the other you say they "don't necessarely" have to do it all at once..

Im just saying it's too early for both. They should try to salvage the WiiU with a CHEAP revision and save a whole shift for a next E3 stage show.

The last 2 consoles they revealed at E3 they announced they would do so beforehand. Can't see why they wouldn't warn us for this one. Unless it's QoL or a revision.
Well, for Wii U they issued a message due to the many leaks that were floating around. For 3DS I don't remember what they did, but for Nintendo Revolution there was a short message.

The Fiscal Year Earnings Release (FY 2013) is on May 7 with investor presentation the day after. If they are indeed going to show new hardware at E3, most likely will they say so there.

Would they announce a Wii U revision when they have a Mario Kart hardware bundle out like two weeks prior?

Doubt it. There are really only two possibilities here (well three):

1) 3DS hardware revision
2) QoL
3) Nothing (rumor is bullshit)

Probably just a new Wii U. Bigger hard drive, fairly significant price drop ($249).

Mario Kart comes out before the announcement to move consoles...then the redesign to keep the momentum.

Dropping the Wii U in favor of a Wii 3 would be suicide for their future prospects in the console market.

It's either going to be a new SKU or a peripheral.

Given that it's hype time, I may as well make up some bullshit.

New handheld that can also double as controller for Wii U. Interchangeable control widgets depending on what you're using for for. You can download Wii U games to it from your Wii U and continue playing them on the move. Wii U firmware update will enable this functionality.

I would actually go for this if it were to be remotely true...

Speaking of interchangeable controllers, a Nintendo patent recently popped up today detailing changeable controllers :)

I want that single nintendo portable/home console device as much as the next guy but c'mon we all know that this is going to be something really underwhelming like a bundle or some kind of wii u revision.

I'm still kind of betting that QoL = nintendo smartwatch

Huh? What did I say? Did I screw up again? :(
Something that failed to flush down the toilet after one flush told me that its gotta be a new console....

Lets start specing!!

  • 12-Core AMD APU w/ 7970 Graphics
  • 12 GB GDDR5 Memory w/ 210 GB/s
  • 1 TB Hybrid Storage with 32 GB SSD
  • 802.11ac Wireless + BT4.0 + 100/1000 Gbps Ethernet
  • 8x BluRay Drive
  • Backwards Compatibilty to for Wii and WiiU

So... $999? :p

If the source is to be believed, and that third parties know about it, that would imply that it in some way changes the development landscape. I think that rules out a 3DS hardware revision.

It is too early for new systems. So that leaves us with a hardware revision that alters development of future games.

Maybe it is a tually is a gamepad-less Wii U revision.

I think I'm going to melt if I see some one say this again. The 3DS is older now than the GBC was when it was replaced by the GBA and the 3DS is almost older than the GBA was when it was replaced by the DS. A 2015 release for the next Nintendo handheld would be perfect.

A cheap revision isn't going to sell the overstock of units that they already have.

look at this fucking thing:

It makes me think of the OG Nintendo DS.

They have to make that shit sleeker and smaller, along with a cheaper revision.

I would love to know if a Wii U purchase is safe, so I guess I have to wait whether I want to or not. I don't want to get one for a final run of games before they launch a new system next year. Surely they would not do that.

if true, who would have thought the xbone would be the least powerful console this gen lol

Even assuming for the sake of argument that Wii U could be salvaged with a price cut, Nintendo is losing money on the system as is. I don't really see how they could cut the price much further without dropping the Game Pad, and Iwata seemed to rule that out pretty definitively at the last investor briefing.

don't ask me for codes
* Color variation - "New hardware" suggests more than that, but maybe that's all there is to this rumor.

* New WiiU SKU - Highly doubt they'll be able to get rid of the gamepad (not that I want them to). It'd require a lot more effort than a Kinectless XB1. Cheaper to manufacture perhaps? Could help, but I'd be afraid what they'd sacrifice - I don't think people want the equivalent of a WiiU Mini.

* WiiU successor - Killing off the WiiU? I don't find it likely; and it seems too soon for them to have anything concrete. Although they could always announce early to get developers on board.

* QoL - Could be anything really. I'm hoping it's R.O.B./Furby/Aibo/Persocom.

* New 3DS SKU - Not sure what they could do. Can they go cheaper than the 2DS?

* 3DS successor - IMO it wouldn't be weird. DS to 3DS was almost 7 years, but GBA to DS only 3+. A 2015 release of the successor would mean a 4 year gap. But with what kind of hardware would they capture audiences with?

* Something Else - Doesn't have to be QoL, or new hardware to replace the WiiU/3DS; but something that stands on its own. Like the little handheld which everybody forgets - the Pokemon Mini.

Frankly I'm hoping for re-release of classic hardware :) NES 2015 BELIEVE

The gamepad is, by far, my least favorite part of the system. Its clunky, has a terrible screen, and serves little to no purpose in the majority of games.

You're wrong BlueRays aren't big enough , they will use HVD, no doubt.

I don't think they need to turn it into a profit as much as they need to save face with the audience

It's going to be a smart phone. And we're all going to cry.

I would buy one :3

... it's "WiiU WiiR" virtual headset and/or the QoL thingy they have been working on with panasonic (or who was it?) some kind of fitness bracelett.. Or something like that..

But really, most unexciting wins the bet: let's welcome 2DS XL to the family!

Edit: First post to GAF, omg! It's nice to be here o/

A Wii U that uses the cloud -- making it 8 times more powerful, perhaps?

Honestly, they should announce a new system that is exactly the same as the Wii U -but does something else like play Blu-rays - and give it a good name. I know to us it seems weird, but there is mass consumer confusion as to what the Wii U is. When I bought mine, my fiancé's 12 year old daughter was over when I set it up.

She suddenly exclaimed, "Wait! The Wii U is a NEW system? I thought it was just a new controller ..."

This is a girl that plays Minecraft, Pokemon, animal crossing, etc -- she isn't into the gamer culture, but she likes games. If she doesn't know, most parents don't.

I hope you said the same thing when Nintendo released the DS in 2004, only 3 years after GBA was released.
