IGN Rumor: Nintendo Revealing New Hardware at E3 [Up: MCV + Videogamer]

If they're revealing hardware and it's not a revision, I bet on smartwatch. Or were wearables later in the schedule they outlined?

The schedule was to avoid wearables altogether and 'leapfrog' to 'non-wearables', whatever those turn out to be.
goddamit Steve.

But apparently Iwata dreamed up Nintendo's new direction less than 4 months ago so there' probably nothing to show for it yet.

I know now what the QoL is. It's a smart fridge that won't let you get the food out unless you're in the fit parameters you set for yourself. Or, it might provide you with a salad if you do 20 push-ups.

For handheld devices, yes. Though mobile architecture will probably swallow all others in the future.

Nintendo has tried their hardest with the 3DS, They did an XL unit, they did a $130 unit, they threw games out left and right, they did tons of bundles and deals. With all that it is still trending downward yoy. They need to replace it while they still have momentum, not when they have no momentum.

Thankfully, you're not a business man. That's... some bad investment advice.

Virtual Boy 2?

lol.
Wait.
Nintendo opened up an R&D department with some of their revenue.
Facebook wants VR to be accessible to all ages.
Nintendo wants their tech to be accessible to all ages.
Nintendo wants innovative tech in their consoles.
VR is pretty innovative.
Tomadachi Life had Miis dancing around a Virtual Boy chanting "All hail the Virtual Boy!"
Miis are used in Miiverse Nintendo's take on a social networking.

Nintendo to make Virtual Boy 2 with an unprecedented partnership with Facebook?

I bet this made somebody's heart stop lol.

OT: I wouldn't expect anything more than another handheld revision.

That's the million dollar question. Nobody knows.
My bet is a nano chip injected directly into the eye. You can't wear it if it's on the inside!

It's obviously a companion robotic flying pet. It will track distance walked. Record your pulse through the day. Play music. And give encouragement in Mario's voice.

I'd like a WiiU rebrand, different name, same hardware and compatibility, with or without a new cheaper gamepad. The wii brand is long dead and buried, they need to get away from it.

That would be a good way to rekindle interest without having to redo the whole pipeline. But then Iwata is unpredictable. Though I highly doubt they'd announce anything as major as brand new hardware when they wont even do a live stage.

No, it isn't. It's solid advice on how to not lose all their momentum AGAIN. It's super likely that the 3DS's successor will be released in 2015. The 3DS is winding down, they've already done everything. By the end of 2015 is will probably be selling less than 100k a month in the US.

Again, why? To sell them to whom? (I'm ignoring the improbability of the price and the imposibility of having a decent 1st party launch line up in such a short ammount of time)

You both have a point but pubs don't look at one criteria only. There is a cost/benefit analysis involving both hardware and userbase. If the Wii U had similar architecture similar to PS4 and X1 there is no doubt it would have better third party support, as the games would be more efficient to port, how much so? Probably not much of a difference because the audience is not there but there would be some kind of difference. It's not a one size fits all kind of answer, each publisher has a different criteria on what audience they need to sell their games and how much the hardware factors into it.

The example of the Gamecube was brought up with the mini discs. GTA III was ported to the PC using CD-ROM which has a smaller capacity. It didn't matter the storage size or power of the console, Rockstar was publishing the game on PS2 regardless and wasn't for the GameCube at all.

If the Wii U had similar architecture, yes. But we're talking now about a hypothetical console to be launched now (in short time), with PS4 and Xbone just launched and with almost no 3rd party support for Wii U.

A revision. IIRC DS Lite was announced through a press release. Nintendo 64, Nintendo DS, Wii, Nintendo 3DS, Wii U were revealed at an E3 press conference. Nintendo Gameboy Advance and Nintendo Gamecube were both revealed at a Kyoto (Spaceworld?) press conference.

And also hardware. Is this where some of the "confusion" in this thread is coming from? I'd say the example of the 3DS XL more or less disproves the entire "but new hardware would mean a live press conference" notion.

So a day after their Mario Kart 8 announcement with some great bundles to try and stir things up for Wii U, IGN talks about a rumour of new hardware for Nintendo in E3?

Not sure if it was moneyhat or Nintendo's ninjas are not that scary anymore... but there's no better way to cool off any enthusiasm consumers could have with that MK Direct.

i dont believe it but hope they announce a new console. more powerful than wiiu, pro controller as standard (0 gimmicks ninty please) and backward compatibility with wiiu

Hohohoho.

If Nintendo reveals a successor to the Wii U, they will have essentially fucked over everyone who pitied them enough to buy the Wii U and enjoy the few fun games it's gathered over the past couple of years.

Luckily, the rumor isn't for a new console.

new hardware huh?

ok.

probably an announcement of an announcement.

...

i don't buy it... it's clear the Wii U is far gone and the DS is looking a bit old now thanks to these mobile companies coming in with their yearly cycles... but this... ehhh... maybe.

I thought these companies spend like 4 years researching and developing each console. I would doubt Nintendo has had enough time since the Wii U release to develop a new console to the point they could show it. I'm very skeptical, but I would be very pleasantly surprised if it turned out to be true.
