Mark Rein teases Unreal Tournament comeback, [More Today]

F2P UT99/2k4 similar to Quake Live. 2k4 F2P on Steam. A new UT4. I don't care, anything that might make a new UT community for a while is fine by me. I still jump on 2k4 once a month or so and do some bot matches. Unfortunately in Australia there isn't a single online server with anyone playing.

I can't see this being a major new release in the series. This is too much of an odd way to announce the comeback of such a large franchise. UT is E3 conference bombdrop worthy. My F2P senses are tingling.

Pretty excited for it then, one of my favourite franchises in shooter variety.

So pretty much we don't know what it could be but it could be:
- HD Remake
- UT4
- F2P title

Lots of those older franchises are been announced in ways which go straight to fans/not really big reveals.

As much as I love the franchise, it really isn't.

Especially since it's going to be PC only, so no conference to drop it at.

There must be a catch, but I'm not sure where yet.

The catch is that if it's in any way related to consoles, it's going to be a slow piece of shit like UT3. Older UTs are too fast to play on console, needs to be played on M+KB like Quake.

OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG OMG

Just waking up and seeing this thread, a hell of a way to start my day - all pumped up for some UT madness!!

As most of the fellow gafers in here, I too hope it's a proper UT game. F2P UT99 remake in UE4 sounds a bit optimistic, but I sure will play the sh*t out of it. Altho a proper, good sequel to UT2k4 is more what I'm looking for, especially after the fact, that since UT3 we haven't seen much fast placed shooters... I'm really sick of these realistic FPS... I wan't some Shock Combos, Rocket Launchers, Double wall jumps etc.

And no - Titanfall was a letdown for me... UT all the way!!!

Ten years ago you would be right. But a lot has happened since then.

Please give me an updated UT2k4! That game was my life for a long while.

It better have some Bombing Run, Onslaught, and Invasion, too!

I'm not picky when it comes to what games they draw from. Even though I prefer UT2004 I simply want to dodge around shock comboing people again, but I have no faith in Epic's ability to deliver. In all likelyhood it's either a console focused game or F2P with associated unlock bullshit.

You're right about F2P crap, that would suck...
They mention the 'UE4 dev community' — presumably the work (or bulk of it, at least) isn't going to be done in-house at Epic. As long as this isn't a project handed out to the 'fan' community, at least it'll be finished.

How open he is about the comeback of the series just makes it painfully obvious that it won't be what people want it to be

A remake of UT99 would be like a dream come true. I played this game all the way until 2012. The community was small in the end but it was like a little family.

It pretty much died comletely off in the last two years tho. Also the most active european league with clanbase shut down for good..

So a revival would be just amazing at this point. Would definitely make me get a new pc for sure alone for this game.

I miss it so much :(

If they rerelease UT1 I would like to see the texture effects that were exclusive to 3DFX VooDoo cards.
(Though some curved surfaces ala Quake 3 wouldn't hurt, that game has aged a bit more gracefully than UT)

Assuming for the moment that this will be F2P, a CS:GO-like model (weapon skins) seems more likely to me than a TF2-like model (hats and stuff). Player avatar alterations wouldn't be a good fit for an arena shooter.
Why do you think so? Have you played UT 2004? It had TONS of unique player models and they did not compromise the gameplay.

Edit: Actually there can be issues with sniping heads with certain models. But serious competitive games could just use standard player models.

I hope this is good, wouldn't mind F2P as others have said if it's done well. Were people really not keen on UT3? I didn't mind it, although played the demo so much I burnt out by the time I bought the game so didn't play it for long.

That's exactly what I said in a follow-up post further down the page.

Yeah, I was referring to competitive play. But I suppose it'd be quite easy to implement a tournament mode that disables character model vanity items and forces the use of a default skin.

If its UT4 it will probably suck just like UT3 did and have all the call of duty rank/unlock stuff.

If its F2P it will be full of awful weapon skins/character skins/characters to buy.

I hope its just a port of UT99 or UT2004 in 1080p/60fps for current gen with new netcode and dedicated servers.

Doubt its a remake.

Well, here's the problem. If it's just like UT99/UT2k4 then the audience for that will be relatively small. If it's more like a modern shooter then UT fans will abhor it and the mainstream might not like it anyway. The best they could do is include enough maps and mods to make everyone happy. Make it an a la carte platform rather than an arena shooter with some modern conventions awkwardly thrown in.

I hope they go back to a more colourful aesthetic. I never played UT3, it just looked so dark and black/grey. I loved the brighter scapes of UT2K4...and of course it was a lot of fun.

I hope they go back to the original TOURNAMENT concept instead of the naff story they introduced with UT3.

Been playing some UT3 again for the first time in years, it's not that bad a game outside the sloppy release product and the horrible console-fied menus, though I think the stock maps for the game are a little tight for how powerful the weapons can be vs space available as a personal preference. I do like the game.
