galaxy over galaxy 2 is bizarre.

galaxy being "fresher", since it was the unveiling of the concept and not the refining of it is the only reasoning I can really think of behind it.

Yeah it's odd, especially as the text in the countdown says "Super Mario Galaxy 2 provides a whole sky full of such worlds as Nintendo once more displays a magic touch that elevates this to the pinnacle of Mario’s 3D adventures".

That said although SMG2 would be my GotG it can never match the impact SMG had so I can kind of understand them giving the nod to the later (although not the gap between them).

Galaxy 2 may be the better game but Rosalina's storybook is the little extra that makes an amazing game into something astonishing.

Good list. There's some I would have moved around (GTA V would be MUCH lower for example), but they had a solid top 10, and I'm happy to see portal 2 get the recognition it deserves, because back in 2011 people seemed to forget about it by GOTY time.

I personally adored Galaxy, mainly because it was probably the only Wii game that actually looked next-gen to me. How Nintendo was able to make that game look as good as it did has convinced me that EAD Tokyo has magic powers.

Plus, it was the true sequel to 64. It got rid of the gimmicks of Sunshine and only including platforming that revolutionized everything. It was definitely the high watermark of the Wii, and showed why Nintendo makes the best first-party games in the industry.

Portal 2 at #2 is the biggest wtf for me.

The co-op is alright, but the single player is just walking through corridors with a radioplay in the background. It wasn't a good puzzle game.

I think Halo should have been in the top 20, other than that, it's a pretty decent top 20. I would say Bioshock would be top 3, take portal 2 to 4th or so. It's tough to make lists though, so I'm not complaining.

If portal 2>portal then certainly SMG2>SMG. I mean, sure SMG was the one that really set the slate but 2 was superior in almost every way. I think Portal 1 is better than the sequel but if we are going with ''bigger and better>the original that came up with the concept'' then SMG2 should be the number 1 on the list. Yeah you're right, it should be higher*, when people look back at the last generation Wii Sports will surely be one of the first games to come mind.

It hit at a lot of points in IGN's "innovation, influence, longevity, excellence, and uniqueness" criteria, hell it's influence alone would earn it a place in the top 20, it's still being felt today with things like the recent kinnect situation.

*Said for a minimal amount of comic and dramatic effect, not seriously.
