Forgot all about Always Sometimes Monsters

So Transistor is fantastic. I enjoyed Bastion but I'm enjoying Transistor even more. The art design and atmosphere is wonderful, the story is mysterious and compelling. But the gameplay is the best part. Just so satisfying and strategic. It plays nothing like Bastion. Real time, you're able to hold your own but vulnerable. Turn mode is a different story. Some of the reviews said it perfectly, the game has a puzzle-like vibe. Positioning, what's the best ability to use, which enemies to prioritize, how to best utilize your limited action/energy, making sure you don't find yourself exposed at the end of a turn. Refining your abilities thanks to incredibly deep function system, mixing and matching new skills and finding your favorites. I'm almost two hours in and I'm enjoying the game immensely, even if it's pretty laggy for me

By laggy do you mean the framerate is low?

By laggy do you mean the framerate is low?
Well not all my specs meet the minimum requirements so yeah, the framerate is poor for me. Just about playable but a low framerate

Edit: had to check online since I don't know much about computers. So lag is used for server and network issues and framerate issues is due to hardware. Now I know the proper terminology. So yes, low framerate

Teleglitch got updated with a new game mode!
Arena Mode:
The Arena mode is an entirely new game feature developed for this patch. There are a total of 36 arenas divided into four chapters. Each chapter can be unlocked by completing the normal campaign (chapter 1 accessible by default).

In the arenas, the player will face hordes of enemies in a randomized level layout. To aid the player, each arena chapter has six different predetermined weapon sets with varying strengths and weaknesses. Each arena have one of the following three objectives: kill all enemy waves, survive a certain amount of time, or kill a specific enemy type.

The arenas will be an excellent training ground for new players and additional content for the few players who have already completed the normal campaign.

Always Sometimes Monsters got a 9/10 from Eurogamer
http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2014-05-21-always-sometimes-monsters-review
Always Sometimes Monsters isn't the first game to get clever with morality. It's not the first game that's had a few grey areas. It also isn't about either of those. It's about perspective. It's about empathy. It's about who we are and why we do what we do. That narrative is one of contradiction and hypocrisy, because that's what real people are about.

Someone also started a thread last year, I just bumped it so if you want to post impressions there or something:
Always Sometimes Monsters - an unconventional RPG about life

Slip - The mechanics are a mix between Ikaruga and BIT.TRIP Runner. You run through a level and need to change colors to absorb or avoid the obstacles and "fight" a boss at the end of the level, it may sound cool but there are other elements in the game that doesn't make it enjoyable for me. Let me start with the artstyle, I don't have a problem with voxels but the game isn't coherent with it, the main character (albeit looking like the amazon mascot), the levels and the overworld are made of voxels, then you have Steve the alien that wanna kill being done in a different way as the bosses.

I picked up Stick it to the Man! for $5 on Steam and got to check it out just now. I'm really digging the humor and artstyle, it feels a lot like Psychonauts. After an accident the main character gains the ability to read minds and use telekinesis. It's basically a point and click adventure game with some platforming elements. I'm only about 30 minutes in, so I'll post more impressions later.

Have only read positive things, as well. Will pick up on WiiU soon, Gamepad seems perfect for it.

I second this opinion. I got it when it released on PS3 and it exceeded all expectations. It's laugh-out-loud funny from the second it starts, often poking fun at itself and gaming tropes. The world and art style are quirky and beautiful, much like Psychonauts. It's clear that it was influential as there is a Two-Headed Baby easter egg. I really loved the Mr. Copy checkpoint system too.

The little I read about it was bad actually. Although I think that was mostly a John Walker review, so that's to be expected to some extent. I generally like Ryan North so I'm curious.

Thank you for your impression, when the game launched I did read and I remember it getting mixed opinions.

I was going to pass on Always Sometimes Monsters but the Steam comments are just fascinating. Some people's playthrough are over in minutes, an hour, some people have played 5 hours and haven't reached the "end". A few are saying the game is 10 hours.

It sounds like the kind of branching narrative game I always wanted. I enjoyed TWD but I never replayed it because it never felt like making new meaningful choices, but rather "Oh, I'll choose that dialogue choice because I chose something different last time"

Any IndieGAF impressions? I'm still on the fence with this game

Hm, that's RPS right? Well, I was talking about user impressions and I have yet to hear from someone that was disappointed with the game (disclaimer: I've stopped reading the Steam threads, mainly talking the game's OT here). Will write up something once I've gotten my hands on it, though.

Alright, I just finished Stick it to the Man, it took me a little under 5 hours. As I said before, the game is a point and click adventure with some platforming. Each of the levels are pretty big, and as you explore more of the level the game provides you with some shortcuts. In order to progress through the levels you have to enter into character thoughts to figure out what they want or what item can provide you. There is no direct combat in the game, but you can enter into enemies' thoughts and steal items that will put them to sleep or distract them.

Like I said in my previous post, I really liked the humor and the art style. The story was simplistic, but the characters and voice acting were top notch. If you're a fan of Psychonauts than I would absolutely recommend this game.

*EDIT* Forgot to mention that it's on sale for $5.09 this week on Steam. http://store.steampowered.com/app/251830/

Endless Legend - Finally had the money to buy it, played it for a little more than an hour and I'm liking it so far, as expected from an alpha build there are some features not yet implemented but the mostly of the core gameplay and mechanics seems to be already implemented. The UI as expected is gorgeous, minimalist and functional I didn't need to much time to figure out the controls partially because the UI feels similar to Endless Space. So far the lore looks rich and each minor faction that I found were different from the previous ones. One mechanic that surprised me are the seasons, when you're in the winter the productions, visibility and movement of your units suffers penalty.

It may not be the deepest 4X game but I'm enjoying it and I hope it comes along nicely.

More Shump is always good.

Arcadecraft is now out on Steam.

It was a long road to get there but very pleased it was released.

Congrats on getting released on Steam.

Has anyone here played Battleblock Theater? It's from the devs of Castle Crashers

Party Animals - ????
worldmap_partyanimals.gif

http://blog.heypartyanimals.com/

Party Animals is an adorable political satire and strategy game about a fictional tropical island that's currently in the grips of election season. You play the role of a quiet mouse bureaucrat who is tired of being a rubber stamp and decides to run for president and shake things up!
On your journey to the Kapitolyo you will raise campaign funds, conduct political sorties, make backroom deals with garrulous goats, and generally test the limits of how far you're willing to go in order to become El Presidente.

OTTTD - $2.99 on IOS, PC version coming soon (IOS, PC)
OTTTD_screenshot__0000s_0003_Layer-17.jpg

Like explosions? Love giant, flying, undead sharks? Then OTTTD is the game for you for you! Alternatively, if you’d like a strategy game that cleverly blends TD & RTS genres for a tactical challenge across an action-packed campaign then OTTTD will scratch that itch.
We describe OTTTD as “Spaceballs meets Starship Troopers” wrapped in a tasty TD game shell. But anyone under 30 has no idea what Spaceballs is (their loss) so we fall back on “It’s an anything-goes TD game that doesn’t take itself seriously.”

I played the console release of battleblock theater from start to finish, not sure if that counts.

I am interested in some impressions as well.

Yes, please, would like to hear your impressions

Alright so here's my though on it.

Its a really fun platformer that isn't frustratingly hard apart from the last level at the end of every chapter since those are time based. Length wise the game can be cleared in 3-4 hours if you're not a completionist and just speedrun through it.

The mechanics it introduced mesh well together and you have alot of freedom in clearing levels (gadgets help ALOT). Speaking of gadgets, they're all pretty useful and after beating the game twice I haven't found any to be overly gimmicky.

The puppet show-esque cutscenes are very enjoyable and the narrator makes the game very entertaining in moments that normally would just have you groan during a level.

I personally found that the best experience was playing coop campaign to fully exploit the game's mechanics although singleplayer campaign is fine and you won't miss out on content or anything if you do it solo.

The level editior is solid so I foresee alot of good levels coming our way with the steam workshop.

4 player multiplayer is great for couch gaming.

Character customization is also nice and varied, not much more to say about the game.
Its great and very enjoyable, I had never been chased by burnt bread shot from a toaster before.

I posted this in the ASM thread:

OK I just beat the game and I think it's pretty great. Tons of replay value here.

There are moments where I had to make a choice and walked away from the computer for a while, had a beer and thought about things. There are moments that made me feel guilty, and sad, and happy.

It's really an interesting experience, and I'm glad I gave it a go. It's buggy. There are game mechanics which suddenly become meaningless, spelling errors, and other small issues that crop up but nothing which breaks the game or ruins the core experience.

Definitely worth it if you like indie titles, especially ones with a story that can go in multiple directions. There are things that happened in the game that I didn't know if I would be able to change or find out more about, NPCs I never talked to and plenty of alternative choices that I didn't make. I think it will take several playthroughs to see everything here.

Right now I'll digest the first one before I go back.

Took around 7 hours to beat the first time round.

I can see how people's playthroughs would end rather quickly as there are a ton of branching paths that might lead to the end.

Also on Steam's webpage it's 8.99, but I bought it through the Steam application itself and it was 7.99.

I played Battleblock Theater for about an hour and so far it's great. The intro cutscene is just hilariously well done and totally sets the tone for the game. It's wacky and silly but the platforming is solid too. Levels aren't that difficult (yet), but they're fun to traverse, the combat is fun, the visuals are vibrant and colorful. I never played Castle Crashers or Alien Hominid but I'll definitely be checking those games out now

Alien Hominid is hard as nails but really good - probably my favourite of their games.

Today I've also played through Javel-ein and Kitsuni.

Kitsuni is a cool idea - and considering it's a ludum dare entry it's got some neat ideas. It's only a few minutes long so it's worth checking out.

Javel-ein, though, is awesome. Really responsive, intelligent design and just really fun to play.

1. Endless Legend
2. Javel-ein
3. The Last Night
4. TIMEframe
5. Wormhunter
6. Kitsuni
7. 0RBITALIS
8. Schein

So I'm a little over 90 minutes into Always Sometime Monsters and I'm really enjoying it. Reminds me of Cart Life, and I'm finding the game oddly compelling. I like narrative games but this is offers an interactive version of a such a mundane, down-to-earth yet engrossing experience that I'm eager to see what happens next.

Compared to something like The Walking Dead, Always Sometimes Monsters feels more organic and open. I wasn't expecting the very RPG vibe of exploring an area, doing "side quests". I like how, while there is technically a timer, it feels like the player dictates the course of the story rather than TWD's very rigid structure.

Hi, I'm part of a dev team called The Working Parts, and we just released our first game on Steam, called They Breathe! I made this post in the Steam thread for May as well, but thought it would make sense to make it here too. Hope it's ok!

The game is an atmospheric, experimental indie title about a frog. It has no on-screen user interface, no dialogues - it's a very 'pure' experience. Don't want to give away too much, since part of the fun is exploring the game on your own. It takes about 30 mins to play through, with a price-point of $1.99/€1.49/£1.49. The game has been available through Xbox Live Indie Games and Desura before, but we've made some improvements to the Steam version and added achievements and cards. And it works great with a 360 controller.

But anyway, after 14+ years of being a NeoGAF member I wanted to give something back to the community.
So I've decided to give away 25 Steam codes for They Breathe in this thread (and 25 codes in the Steam thread for May as well, just to balance things out). Quote to reveal! And would be nice if you pointed out which code you've taken.

Thanks, I took this one. But, if you will, a word of advice: you don't have to do giveaways like this. Next time, just give the keys to Modbot and let the Bot Team take the strain.

Oh, and i don't have to tell you this, but you put 50 keys in this thread, not 25 like you said. A minor nitpick.

Oh, and nice to see people in this thread enjoying Stick it to the Man! I actually worked on that game as well (as a sound designer), along with the game designer and the composer for They Breathe.

Wound up trying a bunch of keys that were already taken so I got locked out for a bit, hopefully there's still an unredeemed key when I regain the ability to redeem codes. :p
