Mario Kart 8 Sells More Than 1.2 Million Units Worldwide Over First Weekend

It'd have to break about 7m (i.e., beat Double Dash) to not be in the worst 3. I don't see what's wrong with this claim.

Nintendo needs a lot more good multiplayer games on Wii U before it's gonna do that, I think.

Okay I misread that bit but still even saying it is likely it will do under 7m... I just don't know man. Is this what is considered likely these days?

Woohoo nicely done nintendo!

I'm laughing so hard right now.

I think the fact that Nintendo included F-Zero in NintendoLand gives it a much better chance than any other racer at seeing a revival.

The tears that would be shed if the next F-Zero game was an HD remake of GX instead of a fully fledged new game with online multiplayer.

Who am I kidding, NintendoGAF would probably rejoice anyway.

So it sold more than Titanfall?

Well deserved, made me buy the Wii U Deluxe Mario Kart 8 bundle and I am actually having fun with the system while my PS4 and Xbox One collects dust!

It'll probably get bundled at some point so it would depend on what other SW Nintendo comes up with to move units.

Sorry guys, new to the whole gif/webM thing. I'll get better.

Anyways, I hope this sells well for nintendo. Game is extremely fun from what I've played.

Picked up a Wii U today for £100 off a guy who was selling a used one with NSMBU and SM3DW. Got the last copy of MK8 on the way home from GAME and a pro controller.

Deserved, but there are quite a few niggles. The fucking view race button shouldn't be the first option, it should be next race. The rubberbanding at 150cc is just ridiculous. I have started to slow down and stay in 4-6th for the first two laps and then push for the finish line in the last lap with sweet bounty from the boxes. Being in first has never sucked this hard before. It feels like Nintendo tried too hard to force "fun" so that the person in last doesn't feel left out. I don't know how else to explain the continued existence of the blue shell in its current incarnation of completely fucking the first placed player over.

There needs to be a way to disable the gamepad completely. It is uncomfortable and gives me hand ache after a while. Pro controller > *.

Otherwise, really enjoyable, some of the new tracks are great.

Hate that they have butchered RRN64 though, fuck checkpoints.

Wow Polygon. I guess since FMA (from my ass) predictions don't work, its back to tea leaves and rubbing treasure trolls?

It seems like kind of a given that a full-scale new fzero would fail to make its money back. GX HD would be exciting because even if we want a new one horribly, we know it doesn't actually make an ounce of sense for Nintendo to throw away that much money appeasing a tiny niche.

Or at least, I am personally comfortable with admitting when my preferences are niche enough that catering to them is kind of sort of a horrible money-sink.

Mario Kart 7 hasn't even sold 10m, and the franchise sales comparisons between 3DS and Wii U don't really favor Wii U hitting half that. And obviously GameCube was in a much better position than Wii U is today, and Double Dash didn't even hit 7m.

People crapped on me to a similar degree when I predicted that NSMB2 would do well, but bomb by NSMB standards.

@BenKuchera: I love Mario Kart 8: http://t.co/QJAPWP9oWc But saying it's going to outsell previous titles is likely madness.

@BenKuchera: Nintendo needs to sell over 4 million more units of Mario Kart 8 to beat this prediction:

@BenKuchera: @Penryn87 The road to 4 million more sales, when the entire install base of the system is 6 million, is long and hard.

@BenKuchera: @realmemoryman3 I'm lost, which other Mario Kart title did it outsell?
Lol

These sales don't matter if this game is not enticing people to buy a Wii U, after all this game was billed as the "Wii U savior". So far it looks like no one is buying Wii u for this game.

You can put the gamepad to sleep if you press the home button in game and go to control settings

What? How can you say that when there hasn't been any news in hardware sales? Well other than the 666% increase in UK

I REALLY feel like they need to drop the price of the WiiU at E3...I think that, in combination with these stellar MK8 sales AND a kick ass E3 could really start a fire that could start to significantly expand the user base.

20% isn't actually all that ridiculous, games like Halo 3 have done upwards of 35% I believe, Gears of War did around 20% too, and Titanfall XB1

Still very impressive of course. Should see a meaty bump in HW in Japan and Americas!!!

You do realize this is 20%...in 3 DAYS, right? RIGHT?...I don't know what you are on, but that IS ridiculous lol

Well that definitely isn't true because I bought one. Not many is probably a good shout, but no one is a huge exaggeration since Wii U sales rose by 666% in the UK this week.

Good sales.
I bout it. I am enjoying it a lot. I haven't tried the online yet though, I'm trying to get 3 stars on everything first.
With the free game promotion I got Wind Waker.

The MK8 bundle got me to finally get around to investing in a WiiU and a few others I know are going to be getting one as well once they can get their hands on one. Sooooo a little premature on that claim there.

Iwata already basically confirmed no price drop this year.

However, since the loss arising due to the hardware production costs being higher than our trade price was taken into account in the previous fiscal year, you could assume that there will be almost no loss this fiscal year for the sales of the 3.60 million hardware units.

On the bright side, sounds like they've greatly reduced the hardware losses. But since they're trying to balance expenses and revenues, and since Iwata is saying "almost no loss this fiscal year from hardware," sounds like there won't be a price cut until next year at least.

Whether it's likely or not, it shouldn't have even been listed. It looks like bias and that's got no place in "news".

Providing relevant, hand-picked content backlinks is a bad thing now?

Didn't you hear? The Wii U install base is capped at 6 million.

If you double the Wii U install base, you still need significantly more than half of Wii U owners to buy Mario Kart for it to break out of the worst three.

You do know this chart was from the official press release, right?

Haha my bad, for some reason I completely missed that : | feeling kinda dumb. I had tried to look up DD numbers before and had seen Wikipedia say 7 million but it was a questionable source, my bad.

No worries. Nintendo almost never breaks down franchise sales like this, so I'm not surprised you didn't notice/think about it.

When I said "experiences", what I was really referring to was something new. I apologize for the impreciseness.

Mario Kart 8 looks significantly better and, for lack of a better term, "newer", than any other Nintendo title. Hence, in building up hype for launch and beyond, I believe MK8 would have done a much better job than NSMB U which for the most part looked like NSMB Wii in HD.

Part of the problem, as evidenced from sales so far, has been a lack of adoption from the hardcore Nintendo loyalist- those customers I suspect would have been more excited about the system and its future if their first look of the system was MK8 and not 2D Mario.

Dunno. I would think the hardcore Nintendo loyalist knows precisely what the WiiU is, and doesn't need an update on MK graphics to "see the light". Especially since that audience has been repeatingly assuring everyone that graphics don't really matter.

There's still confusion about Wii U being a separate system from the Wii. schuelma's saying that if MK8 came out near launch, hopefully the obvious step up in graphics from the Wii would let people know that you really did need to buy a new system to play this game. The *ahem* "leap" from NSMB Wii to NSMB U was not something that was going to give the same impression to people looking at both games.

Not convinced by this either. The main issue comes from the Wiii____ conundrum mostly, and the fact that Nintendo has originally been showing and advertising this as mostly "the new gamepad". Not the fact that there's updated graphics now.
I'd think people who care enough about graphics/tech wouldn't have been confused past the original announcement.
