Sony Killing the PSP across the board.(Not just Japan Anymore)

Well I guess that leaves me wondering when PSP games will come down from PSN. Better hurry up and buy the ones we want before they're gone.

Seriously I dont know where the hell some of you people come up with shit like this. Considering that a good number of the titles work perfectly fine and for the JPSN for example pretty much ALL the PSP titles Ive downloaded no problems on my Vita. And thats at least a grands worth so far.

By your logic they should take down all the PS1 and whatever meager PS2 titles they got up there too eh?

RIP in peace. Ahead of its time and despite the thing being infested with piracy it did really good even in the late years thanks to great japanese support. Probably the most underrated console of all time.

Also PSP holds the record for the number of single consoles bought by me. I had 2 PSP 3000, 1 E1000 and a PSPGO.

Sony can't let that amazing library go to waste.

I still have my PSP but they should release it all on PSV vis PS Now or PSN.

Also EU still buys the PSP so I'm guessing they will continue shipping there?

You know due to it coming out way later in Europe* it is possible that when shipments do cease Europe will still have had the system on the market for the least amount of time.

While optical drives in handhelds seemed silly and it was dawn of poor battery life handhelds its power in 2005 was fairly unrivaled for a portable and I think it is still decent now. I also think its sleek design forced Nintendo to look at their terrible DS phat design (I refused to buy the system because of that). It is a shame Sony did not seem able to build on the momentum of that.

*-Now this fits in with that point:
Lots of nostalgia today because of those news. Someone I follow on Twitter remembered about Lik-Sang and how Sony Europe sank them in 2005 to prevent importing!

http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/news241006liksang

I absolutely loved my PSP, got a lot of mileage out of it. It's a PSP 1000 from Christmas 2005 and it still works without a problem!
I loved how on their death Lik-sang decided to doss all the Sony Europe employees who had used their services (mainly for importing PSPs).

The PSP was a really fantastic device. It built up its own fantastic library over the years, then the possibilities of emulation were just the icing on the cake.

Calm down, mate, he is just upset. Don't be so hard on him, why couldn't you just say "no worries, they won't take it down ;)" We are all on the same boat here.

::Salutes:: You were a good little handheld PSP. I haven't played you at all in the past 3 years, but you did well on my daily commute. I remember playing Dissida on the train and a girl peaked over my shoulder, squeed, and said "IS THAT A FINAL FANTASY FIGHTING GAME?!?" We went on a date a week later, and a week after that I never saw her again.

Where is this? CeX? I see region 2 hardwares. This is somewhere in Europe?

Im perfectly calm, thats just how I talk and generally respond to things with lack of obvious logic behind it. Hes not the only one here thats going along the incorrect assumption that due to the hardware sales being stopped that suddenly the digital versions will vanish. If I was really pissed off I wouldnt have even bothered to reply.

It was my favored handheld over the DS and I don't regret that. Great little machine compromised by the tech of its day, it's just a shame its successor hasn't really been able to see the same sort of sales.

Bought mine later on the cycle, a 2000, got one because of my friend, who got his first, while I got a DS. Loved the graphics on a portable, always thought it was awesome. Still kicks ass and is in one piece, but the screen is full of dust, and that sucks. I miss the exclusives that the PSP had, like Gran Turismo, God of War, Valkyria Chronicles 2, Grand Theft Auto, etc. I love my Vita but those titles still put the PSP on top of the Vita to me.

I bought a 3000 model back in January, when they were still $100 for a brand new one. Got lucky, I guess, because it wasn't much later that the prices spiked back up into the $150 range. I was there on day 1 back in 2005, but had long sold off my 1000 model & most UMD games, and most anything I bought on PSN I figured I'd play on Vita. However, I'm one of those nostalgic bastards who likes to play games on the hardware it was made for, so I had to track one down before it was too late.

You had a nice, lengthy life with a lot of ebbs and flows, PSP - probably the best launch of any PlayStation console ever (seriously, Lumines, Ridge Racer, Wipeout, even that first Untold Legends was hot shit)... followed up by a drought that makes most other console launches look like an embarrassment of riches - you'll go down in history as one of the few pieces of hardware that actually gave Nintendo something to compete with on the portable front.

So. years ago I used to have a PSP phat. I gave it to my mom to sell and help with her bills. Never got a new one.

Do newer PSP games run correctly on the oldest model? Didnt the newer models uave a mic and more ram? I might try to buy an old used one.

I still think they need a PSV model that has proper L2 R2 buttons and just ditch that stupid useless rear touchpad.

Sure the mold will cost more along with physical parts to be incorporated with the design, but for what Sony is trying to do with the device also as a remote play accessory they really should consider it.

Who thought it was a great idea of having a touch pad that you couldnt visibly see in the first place was a good idea, let alone trying to control with the very fingers supporting the handheld unit.

Totally did not think that through and its not like a lot of titles take advantage of it. Trying to use it as a L2 R2 replacement is jank as fuck.

The PSP was great since it was a gaming machine with no real extra bells and whistles on it. Although they should have made the concave analog pad a standard feature since it just blows away the normal one.

Just buy a newer model. No reason to get an older one, esp if you are going used you are just upping your chances for purchasing a unit with higher potential for hardware fatigue due to time since its been released, vs used newer models.

Love the PSP, when it came out it felt so ahead of the GBA and DS, it wasnt even funny.

Still remember playing one of the Tony Hawk titles that came out near released and being floored about how faithful it was.

Also, what an amazing homebrew scene, very exciting times.

No joke - I actually shed a tear when reading this.

I've had the same fat PSP 1000 for almost a decade now and the only thing I can say is that it is by a large margin the best console I've ever hard if counted by hours clocked into it alone. Be it UMD, downloads, roms, homebrew like the perfect port of Cave Story, or PSX classics I've put this thing through hell and it's as reliable now as the day I bought it. Ugh... it's just so damn good.

Are they really going to kill it off without announcing a final sales number? That's irritating.

I normally don't do back ups but just bought that new EU only psp e1001 aka psp street new for €30 could not resist at that price. Too bad it only has a mono speaker and no wireless so no multiplayer games for that. RIP PSP you godlike system.

Yep the PSP has been a great little machine with a MASSIVE library of titles. Well in Japan anyways.

I still remember hording a ton of the official hi-cap batteries when I heard that they were going out of production.

These things, no idea if they became a standard with the later units though.

This also reminds me that I need to get a better battery for my phat. I left it on sleep mode more than once for oh, a few months at a time. Bloody thing won't run for more than 30 minutes unplugged, and forget downloading anything.

So, a new battery for the old one and a 3000 to keep on hand. Memory ain't too pricey either, so there's that.

It had some great games. I still keep an eye out for a cheap PSP Go every now and again as I always wanted one as a one-stop emulation handheld, but they're always really expensive. The main reason I wanted one was because of how uncomfortable the regular PSP is, it's easily one of the most hand-cramping handhelds I've owned, I just gave up using it solely because of that.

PSP sales in Japan (Jan-Apr): 65k
Vita sales in the US (Jan-Apr): 55k

Will Sony discontinue the Vita in North America?

Are they really going to kill it off without announcing a final sales number? That's irritating.

Yeah...

But it's not getting killed worldwide yet. As has been noted, the thread title is inaccurate:

1) PSP is being discontinued in Japan this month and was finished in North America in January.
2) It's still going to be shipped to the rest of the world for the time being.

They should just fold PSP software into Game Archives. Port their PSP emulator to PS3/4 and let you buy and play the games anywhere.

Bought one back in 2009, and haven't regretted it since. Now's a good time to gather up some great games that I missed out on earlier.

R.I.P.

I'm trying to go with least expensive. I don't make much money. haha.

So it survived longer than the DS? Weird.

But, yeah, the console's basically been dead in the US for years now. I sold mine a while ago. It had a good life, but this isn't a surprise or anything, obviously.

Or you could just use your phone/PC with PPSSPP for nearly the same experience (with a controller) *duck duck gooses*

I love the system but the D-pad is pretty bad. :/ Shame Bluetooth pairing didn't happen with it's younger brother. It's crazy that only the Go allows it.

Yeahhhh buddy. That PSP launch was something special.

The Vita also had a ridiculous launch if you think about it, but it wasn't as much of a quantum leap as the PSP was.

Technically there are still also DS releases coming. Mostly DSiWare but every now and and then a new puzzle/shovelware retail release still hits shelves in the west too.

I'm not sure if Nintendo ever made an announcement on ending DS hardware production yet or not though?

The handheld I've spent the most time with is easily the PSP. I've upgraded a few times but the apex for me is the Go.

I'm serious, the PSP Go is ridiculously nice.

With that being the case even more so should consider protecting your financial investment by making a choice with the least amount of potential complications down the road, if that makes sense.

Would be a damned shame if you bought one only to have it break shortly after or some other issue comes up due to the age and use of said item.
