The Legend of Zelda Wii-U Shown at Nintendo Digital Event ["2015"]

"Bogus and superficial"...?
I already explained my reasons, namely stemming from seeing each character as a character. I also stated that I wouldn't like it if any of the mainstays were drastically altered, so I'm not sure why you keep harping on Link.

And I also said they would be free to do it though, and make any changed they want because it's "not the same person". It just wouldn't seem like the same character to me. Like if in the next Mario game he was a tall, skinny, woman or something. I'd buy and play it, but I'd be like "Hmm.....ok."
If Mario were literally reincarnated between each entry with lore, narrative and world design seeing significant skakeups with each release then that analogy there might make more sense

Why are some calling the setting futuristic? Its not at all futuristic and just like some have said already, mechanical enemies have been in 3D zelda games before... And personally, I fkn love Links design. Its pretty much perfect.

So Zelda is a girl in this game?

On a more serious note, I'm definitely looking forward to a non-linear 3D Zelda game. Maybe you just start with the bow and you get a sword later into the game.

... but is it 1080p / 60 fps?

Just kidding, it looks good! But every new Zelda since Majora's Mask haven't been for me. I wonder if this may take me back.

Because it assumes change is inherently bad. Why is it a good reason?

Even with the more androgynous incarnations of the character? Hyrule Warrior's Link could be a girl at first glance at the artwork. What about that design relies on him being a guy?

Was the masculine looking OoT Sheik ruined in Super SMash Bros Brawl when they gave Sheik (Zelda in disguise) a more feminine figure?

I don't know man, Hyrule Warrior's Link still looks like a guy at first glance and I don't think OoT Sheik was every super masculine looking, which is why the character worked so well.

The teaser looked stunning, the art style and the graphics were amazing, can't wait for 2015 and this game to come.

And it's funny seeing so many people being confused about link and if it's a girl or a boy, I blame Game Trailers and Mike Damiani lol.

He looks very effeminate but this image convinced me he's still a guy:

But I know people will continue arguing about it until we have confirmation, but my money is on Link still being a dude, just a more younger and effeminate one.

idk, for me in that pic it looks like link has wide hips.

Nintendo has my interest here. This could be a Wii U seller to me along with smash bros if handled well, but even then it's hard to justify an entire console purchase for only 2 games I care about.

That said I wouldn't be surprised if I did pony up for one to play this. The look for Link is fantastic and I would LOVE if they steer clear of the standard green tunic look. Let's shake things up!

Wait a second...

I hadn't even though about this, but is this Kid Link or "Adult Link"

Initially I was assuming adult but when he jumped off the horse he looked a bit shorter and smaller than "typical" adult link.

Who knows. Kid Link would be interesting to have again...

no, it's obv the dudes with the hats in the background screaming because they're being blasted with lasers

it might even be those horned goats making that noise

that sure as hell doesn't sound like a protag voice, hamming it up with a Wilhelm-esque OOOOOUUU

Are you implying that the scream at 0:11 in this vid:

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tUFFVATu9Lg

does not sound similar to this one at 0:04 (when he jumps the fence):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1aGPkbRKfgU

Maybe I'm getting deaf

I'm gonna be real ... IDK.
My heart is telling me that that looks like "tomboy" proportions ... and that Link even moves like a girl ... and that new ponytail aint helping me out much.

What I DO find interesting is the hints of "Ganon's race/ culture" in the design.

Saw someone bring this up on tumblr but I thought it was BS till I googled OoT Ganon.

The design on the arm wraps and even wut tiny bit of the cloak I can see looks like the patterns on his light cloth.

Am I just seeing shit? Maybe, could be that that's just a normal pattern in the series and I just didn't notice.

As for Gender ... IDK, need a voice at least.
Oh, also noticed that Epona has a black mane now instead of iit's normal white color ...

If I ever post something in Japanese which I don't understand, please BAN me.
I can't wait until Nintendo uploads the video and in the description it says "Link is back" or something like that.

It started when the sentiment became "a boy shouldn't be like this, make Link a girl".

That's almost textbook-like sexism.

Here's one of the first posts in this thread that mention "girl"
Link can be a feminine-looking dude. Look at his Hyrule Warriors incarnation.

Anyway no boobs, and I don't see them making Link a girl anyway.

There's no "a boy shouldn't look like this" posts going by the search I did.

There's this post though, suggesting the user suspects a shitstorm to start from such a discussion:

don't even fucking start

This one mentions a friend who's against the idea of Link being a girl:

I have a friend who's upset with the prospect that Link might be a girl, and that it's not Link if it's not a male.

F him though, game looks great. :)

And then came other posts from people who are against Link being a girl for some reason.

I draw the line at art shifts because, like I said, they aren't changing the established traits of the characters. Yes, they may look different, but I can still immediately tell who Link is when I see his character. It's one of the reasons the Twilight Princess reveal worked so well. When we saw that Link riding up on horseback for the first time, we immediately knew who it was.

And that could be achieved with a girl Link still. Link already appears effeminate, could wear the same garb and use the same weapons.

Nothing about a girl Link prevents the game from being a Zelda game (and I'll still play it because Zelda is my favorite series), but I think that's one of the reasons why Link shouldn't be a girl. If sexuality doesn't matter in Zelda and the gender of the main character doesn't ultimately mean anything, why go against 28 years of history and established character traits just to say "Oh hey, by the way, Link's a girl now"?

You haven't provided any reasons why Nintendo should stick with 28 years of (this one aspect of) history. If there's no good reason to be against Link being a boy or being against Link being a girl, then you saying he shouldn't be a girl doesn't make sense. You contradict your point. Not sure how the first sentence of this quote leads to "that's why Link shouldn't be a girl"

re-read the thread and you'll only see people saying "Link shouldn't be a girl." No one's saying he shouldn't be a boy. That's why people are discussing this.

I think it's really a matter of a glass half full/empty kind of thing, only no side is necessarily wrong. I can see why people would be fine with a female Link, I just think it would make a lot more sense to make a new IP with a female character.

Then you don't actually have a problem with Link being a girl, you'd just prefer a new IP.

Now i like to have a wallpaper of that huge overworld

Like I said earlier, I think they may be going for a Link in between kid and adult. Looks between 13 and 15 to me.

Meh. The whole 'see that mountain in the distance, you can climb it' thing has been done so many times before. Hopefully they'll be able to do something interesting with it this time, rather than creating a huge, yet empty and boring world ala Skyrim.

This. I never saw the appeal of big open worlds. I don't mind open world if the worlds AREN'T so big. Smaller for better design rather than miles of padding.

Why are some calling the setting futuristic? Its not at all futuristic and just like some have said already, mechanical enemies have been in 3D zelda games before... And personally, I fkn love Links design. Its pretty much perfect.

I would like to think that a futuristic Hyrule would be like a perfect mesh of technology and nature. It still retains that fantasy vibe, with a lot of greenery and earth tones, while having more natural, clean mesh of technology and futuristic architecture.

Kind of looks like an in between. Link looks to be around 15 or 16.

I don't understand this discussion. I'm all for a female Link, but Link has always looked feminine. When he was designed for OoT, he was meant to be a character that was more attractive to women. That usually means (at least for anime) a few feminine qualities.

Link has always been an androgynous elf. Always.

Also lol at the people saying it's Zelda. It's Link. Link on Epona just like we've seen umpteen times. They had him in a hood and teased us because they always tease us before showing us how he looks with each new iteration.

Yep, in the past few Zelda games he has been rather androgynous just like his bro Marth.

They're just making it much more apparent now.

I still like the traditional green clothes, but I admit I preferred the crawfish pyjamas on Wind Waker.

The outfit he's wearing is possibly an homage to them.

Perhaps the reason he has the equipment he has is that he's already a seasoned pro. Maybe he's toon link grown up? Probably not but you never know.

And that Link is Link, as in male. A little feminine yes, but still a boy.

It's totally confirmation bias, but I'm convinced she's a tomboy girl. That scream at the beginning could definitely have been a reactive NPC. And even that scream, the "aaah" sounds too fearful to be coming from the confident character we saw. It was the NPC.

I have, you're just ignoring them or not finding them acceptable. At this point, I'm just running around in circles, you're just running around in circles, we aren't getting anywhere. I guess we'll agree to disagree.

And yes, I would prefer a new IP with a main character who's a girl instead of swapping the genders of two established characters and calling it a day. If that's unacceptable to you, I guess I'm sorry.

Gahiggidy

My aunt & uncle run a Mom & Pop store, "The Gamecube Hut", and sold 80k WiiU within minutes of opening.
Just noticing the simple, real world sounding piano arrangement, which I just love. Reminds me of silent film soundtracks. Probably not going to be that way in final game. :(

Looks great.

Probably gonna get a Wii U this holiday. Should be enough released and upcoming at that point for me to get consistent use of it.

Looks nice, but a bit choppy. I would have preferred a more realistic style but I am not complaining, I will wait to see more. I wanted to see more open spaces and adventuring.

You haven't provided any good reasons is what I meant. Your reasons (making link identifiable as Link, staying true to 28 years of history) don't require link to be a girl. You go on to admit that there's no good reason to be against Link being a girl. nothing you've said comprehensively shows that Link needs to be a girl.

And yes, I would prefer a new IP with a main character who's a girl instead of swapping the genders of two established characters and calling it a day. If that's unacceptable to you, I guess I'm sorry.[
I've never said that that — or anything — was unacceptable the way you said a girl Link was unacceptable.

I don't understand this discussion. I'm all for a female Link, but Link has always looked feminine. When he was designed for OoT, he was meant to be a character that was more attractive to women. That usually means (at least for anime) a few feminine qualities.

People voiced a distate for androgynous looking characters and then some said Link shouldn't be a girl

Everything looks amazing apart from the fact that Link seems to be getting more androgynous with every game.

What's wrong with that?

I don't really think he looks like a girl, but if for some reason he does I can understand why someone would be upset. Link's a guy. Instead of reestablishing his character and making him into a female character, I would much, much rather they create a new IP around a female hero.

Other people recognize that saying Link has to be a guy doesn't make sense. Then the discussion happened.

The main discussion isn't really about some "Chico is Quiet" conspiracy nonsense.

What is going on here :lol
I actually thought he looked more masculine than the last 3 games.

The main thing I took from the reveal was it reminded me that blue is better than green #keeptheblue

Cia's boobs, Link's gender. The fanbase is on a roll right now.

Anyways...I wanna dance around in the water. And I still want to cut all the grass. I want to touch all the things. @____@

If I had to assume what's going to happen, I'd say that "Link" is just a traveler and everything he finds becomes a visible part of him. So...maybe the "Hero's Tunic" is something you'd have to build up to with exploration and customization. Every player will prolly have a unique looking Link. (Though I really want the hat back) Also maybe each player starts off with a different starting weapon. Aonuma is trying to change the item system right? Looks like we won't be lucky enough to start with a sword. Starting with the bow sounds pretty cool to me. :)

I really don't like the cel-shading on Link's face. I'm getting an awesome Shadow of the Colossus feel mixed with a tacky Jak and Daxter feel. And it is tearing me apart. I hope we see something a bit more "moody" in the caves and dungeons. I also hope this game isn't all about "isolation" I want NPCs who keep me interested in the world with their unique stories.

I was personally hoping for something dark and colorful...like mah avatar. >_>

They need to interview the crap out of Aonuma. o___e
