The Legend of Zelda Wii-U Shown at Nintendo Digital Event ["2015"]

I have, you're just ignoring them or not finding them acceptable. At this point, I'm just running around in circles, you're just running around in circles, we aren't getting anywhere. I guess we'll agree to disagree.

And yes, I would prefer a new IP with a main character who's a girl instead of swapping the genders of two established characters and calling it a day. If that's unacceptable to you, I guess I'm sorry.

If a female Link is unacceptable to you, I guess I'm sorry as well.

People are acting as if Link looked like that boy or girl from Jurassic Park.

Good to see that the realism advocates are out in force all over the internet as usual...sigh.

Zelda has always been stylised and always will be. Twilight Princess and the WiiU tech demo whilst darker in tone were still stylised. If you think they were striving for realism or that they were in some way more realistic looking than this, I don't even know were to begin.

Wait a second...

I hadn't even though about this, but is this Kid Link or "Adult Link"

Initially I was assuming adult but when he jumped off the horse he looked a bit shorter and smaller than "typical" adult link.

Who knows. Kid Link would be interesting to have again...

looks like a younger teen Link, younger than SS and TP teen Link possibly.

People voiced a distate for androgynous looking characters and then some said Link shouldn't be a gir

Other people recognize that saying Link has to be a guy doesn't make sense. Then the discussion happened.

The main discussion isn't really about some "Chico is Quiet" conspiracy nonsense.

Gotcha.

The teaser looked stunning, the art style and the graphics were amazing, can't wait for 2015 and this game to come.

And it's funny seeing so many people being confused about link and if it's a girl or a boy, I blame Game Trailers and Mike Damiani lol.

He looks very effeminate but this image convinced me he's still a guy:

But I know people will continue arguing about it until we have confirmation, but my money is on Link still being a dude, just a more younger and effeminate one.
It looks like a part of Zelda's chest overlaps the belt.

JUST listen to that scream when the monster appears, it's a male Link shouting to his horse!
I think that's the people on the country side. And I still don't see how you can get gender out of a shout?

I call the character Zelda, because I have faith Nintendo has respect for their characters and wouldn't do a gender swap, when Zelda is more than formidable enough to have a game made about her.

Not a big fan of pseudo pastel/cell shading, the E3 2011 WiiU Zelda - while limited on partial and physics effects looked much clearer and more realistic, It's like Nintendo want to make a darker more gritty Zelda by showing tech demo's at the start of each console release but then soften up for the actual release because god forbid if they don't cater to all audiences.

Don't get me wrong, the E3 2014 footage isn't bad, it's just more of the same art style, Ninetendo are just playing it safe yet again which is a real shame.

At least we can fill in this now:

This absolutely floored me. My expectations were high but this went beyond. And it's just a tiny little teaser. I need more of this Nintendo. Much much more!

I don't think it has anything to do with audiences, tbh. This is just way stronger and eye-catching. 'Realistic' is always a tad more generic imo.

If Mario were literally reincarnated between each entry with lore, narrative and world design seeing significant skakeups with each release then that analogy there might make more sense
Maybe because I don't really care about the Zelda timeline is why it does make sense to me.

If Mario creators chose to shackled by the timeline stuff too, then people would probably be asking the same thing of Mario games right now. Like where do the rpgs fit in, the 2d games, the 3d games, why is Bowser bad and sometimes good, etc. And why can't each "Mario" reincarnation be this or that. Kinda glad they didnt do that...

I guess I see the Zelda the same way. In which Mario is just Mario and Link it just Link. Whether it's Paper Mario, 2D, M&L Mario, it's just Mario at root. So it'd be weird if he suddenly had a huge change.

And Link is just Link to me, whether it's 2D, 3D, Hyrule Warriors, whatever. The timeline stuff isn't really for me so it's Nintendo's Link to me. So again, it'd be weird if Nintendo's Link changed.

Even with different graphics, from Paper Mario to Toon Link, it's still just Link and Mario to me. At the base of it I don't see either of them as different people in each game.

But this discussion is getting kind of pointless now...

I'm assuming it's asking too much for the final game to have the IQ of the press shots. That said, I really hope they target 1080; with such a large draw distance, it would look pretty jaggy and/or muddy at 720, even with good AA.

Nintendo always makes me speechless one way or another. This time all I have is a smile on my face and a warm feeling overtaken me. Here's to another adventure!

A Ghibli-esque, open-world Zelda with a possibly female protagonist sounds pretty much perfect on paper. Let's hope it holds up when we get to play it in 2016.

Looks like this might be the only game I buy on Wii U to play in single-player. Hoping for good IQ.

Also, this gender discussion is silly. Of course he's male.

This game won't be 1080p on WiiU.

Also, this IS still Nintendo we're talking about here. They're not exactly, like, champions of progressivism or anything. They're very traditional and wary of shaking up formulas.

That includes Zelda. We always hear about how the next one will toss aside all the old conventions... but at the end of the day, it's still Zelda. Which is at least partly why so many people in recent years seem to have grown weary of it.

Nintendo will throw a lot of things to the side but they always keep the core intact. I think that based on their history, expecting or hoping Link will be female is going to set some of you up for disappointment.

Not really. Nintendo were quite clear at the time that the Zelda graphics demo was not necessarily what the next Zelda would look like. It was just a showreel based on the Twilight Princess style.

IMO Zelda should always be a whimsical, colourful adventure, Nintendo now seem to agree.

Exactly, the tech demo looks decent for that room in particular, but Hyrule field would look REALLY generic and bland compared to what we got today

I'd legitimately love a female Link. Nintendo taking those kind of creative risks ala Wind Waker would be a welcome sight.

The trailer itself was some hot shit. Loved the art style.

This. Nintendo will keep it pretty close to the core, if it was not nintendo then maybe, but nintendo? Nope he's male.

At this point I kinda suspect the reason Nintendo keeps using a "realistic" style for tech demos is because they're demos. People tend to judge hardware by how well it evokes the always-elusive dream of photorealism. So the engineering teams that put together their Zelda demos lean in the direction of realistic texture art to show off.

But when they get into the business of making an actual game, different needs arise. And the kind of art they create to flesh out the game world tends towards the fanciful, colorful, and impressionistic. Thus the final game veers back towards an artistic style.

That's exactly how I see things as well.

I like the concept behind this. I always said I wanted Zelda to be a return to form of the very first game, one that focused on a large landmass and emphasized exploration over all. That is exactly what Aonuma was talking about.

I'll wait and see if the execution of the idea is quite what is promised. I mean, I also liked the concept behind Skyward Sword (return to island-esque freeroam from Wind Waker, dungeon design being found in non-dungeon areas in the overworld, etc), but the game itself was marred in execution by horrible pacing and ridiculous "hints".

This art style is way fucking better than the monotone generic style of the tech demo from a few years back. It was graphically nice but, you know, so is this. Zelda works better for me when it has a more cartoony angle. I just think it works and looks fantastic and it's just so much more appealing to me.

What I love about the open world concept is that it's not going to be a huge world for the sake of it, like Elder Scrolls. I think they'll nail it and it seems like we're going to get something that feels like the original but fully realized with modern technology. That entire presentation from Aonuma felt like, hey, we're trying to address everyone's problems with the last few games-- which I thought were terrific and some of the best installments, but I don't speak for everyone.

This game won't be 1080p on WiiU.

Ya I have a feeling it's obviously going to be 720p just hoping for that 60fps goodness. Also, I have no idea what the whole gender discussion is even about Link always looks fairly effeminate. That being said, if they gave players the choice of gender in this game, I think that's something a lot of people would be happy about.

I for one am just praying that every character in the game besides the highly controversial Link is voice acted.

Also, this gender discussion is silly. Of course he's male.

There are two different sex/gender discussions going on. One is what you're talking about, the other is:

I don't understand this discussion. I'm all for a female Link, but Link has always looked feminine. When he was designed for OoT, he was meant to be a character that was more attractive to women. That usually means (at least for anime) a few feminine qualities.

People voiced a distate for androgynous looking characters and then some said Link shouldn't be a girl

Everything looks amazing apart from the fact that Link seems to be getting more androgynous with every game.

What's wrong with that?

I don't really think he looks like a girl, but if for some reason he does I can understand why someone would be upset. Link's a guy. Instead of reestablishing his character and making him into a female character, I would much, much rather they create a new IP around a female hero.

Other people recognize that saying Link has to be a guy doesn't make sense. Then the discussion happened.

The main discussion isn't really about some "Chico is Quiet" conspiracy nonsense.

Absolutely loving the art style. Can't wait to find out more about the game. Nintendo has really impressed me with its showing this year.

I wanted to dominate the living room. Then I took an ESRAM in the knee.
The game most probably will be 720p/30fps, hopefully without significant drops.

People comparing it to Wind Waker HD are being silly.

That looks like the Skyward Sword engine ported to Wii U which probably helped them move more quickly with development than if they built a new engine from the ground up.

It will be great to see what they can do with the expanded resources given how constrained SS felt.

And no sign of an annoying companion so far is the best news out of E3 yet.
