Buying things you don't need just because they're cheap is always exciting. :p

It is. The inner hunter-gatherer needs to be sated.

We are the people who never levels up their pokémons besides the main party, we just collect them and send to someone's PC.

We are the people who stocks all the potions up to x99 and never sue them.

We are the people who collect all the loot and can't run because they are encumbered.

I never played pokeman, but the other two fit me to a T. You should see my Breezehome in Skyrim. Good lord.

it is mystery to me too, I have so many games I want to play, and no time to play them, still, I'm awaiting sale for some unfathomable reason. (><)

Same. I can't wait for it to start. Tomorrow, right?

The past Winter sale was my very first Steam sale ever. It was pure feels overload. Outrageous prices, great games everywhere, giveaways go wild as well; I even got lost in the midst of chaos and missed quite a lot of (amazing) deals for games that I had no idea even existed.

I'm already getting prep'd for this one, even though my body and wallet won't ever be ready.

The first Steam sale is always the best Steam sale. You're just chasing the dragon after that.

I can't remember how this goes. Should I craft badges or sell cards? I'm at level 52 and i don't want to "improve" my profile but I don't want to miss out on any deals that may be had from crafting. I kinda just want to sell to avoid the annoyance.

I also like the Community Voting part but my votes never win...! They always aim for the biggest discount no matter how often that game goes on sale. Borderlands 2, Magicka, Garry's Mod are a few examples.

It's all Steamgaf's fault, before joining or lurking I had a lot of self control when a Steam sale was around. For example, in the Autumn sale I only bought Tropico 4, Rogue Legacy and Age of Empires II HD. Since I joined this damned community I became a reckless Steam hoarder

JaseC

Wait until the sale begins as items may replace sale cards as a crafting reward. You're not gaining anything by crafting now -- if you really want a sale badge it'd be far cheaper to just buy the cards themselves after you've exhausted your sale funds and voting opportunities as opposed to earning them through crafting.

If you care about none of the above, then, sure, go right ahead and sell now.

Edit: Impulsive purchasing habits vindicated:

I quite like the way things get during sale times. Very similar to how SteamGAF usually operates but amplified because we're getting more eyes on the thread than usual. People want suggestions for games to look out for, in-depth recommendations, validation for buying Yet Another $2.50 Throwaway Game that they will never look at nor play.

We scream WAIT FOR THE DAILIES and yet still more souls fall to the temptation early, lessons being learned in real time with the sound of cash registers in musique concrète for the backing soundtrack.

Yet more people asking "who the fuck is that in JaseC/Panda/ClassyPenguin(miss you bro)/etc's avatar" and the glut of off-the-wall responses to said question.

All of us screaming at our screens at our respective 4AM timezones just dying for the voting to roll over and see if we need to stay up another hour, only for god damn mother fucking shitlording Borderlands 2 to win the vote yet again.

The immense generosity even in the quietest moments. We're all Dupy for at least a day.

I don't buy a whole lot during the sales as my library is already fairly fat but I enjoy the community and spectacle of it all. SteamGAF's my home thread on GAF and it makes me happy to see some strangers poke their heads in sometimes and get a taste for what makes this place great. Sales tend to put those head-stickings into overdrive. I still enjoy the sales but for a different reason than most.

Completely agree. SteamGAF gets me to buy things i'm not even remotely interested in all the time.

It's just dawned on me that the next couple of weeks is going to bring the old "when's the sale starting/ending?", "oh X is in sale for so much should I buy it now or wait?" And "why haven't the deals changed over? You suck Valve!" string of posts. I think due to the volume Steam threads get to these days that shit is going to give me an aneurism

Oh well what with the WC and all that I could do with a GAFcation. See you on the flip side SteamGAF and you know where I am if you want to hear me whittle on.

my favorites are the "LOL ONLY 33% DAILY VALVE SUCKS" posts 30 seconds into the new deals, while they are still switching over

Lets make Steam bingo cards for this. Whenever someone completes a card, they have to buy a game and have a drink.

Will we pass out drunk or go broke first?

How do you guys deal with the guilt when you bough too many?

What is this 'guilt' you speak of?

and you just explained why I stay the shit out of the sale threads. It's impossible to keep up with and 95% of the posts contain the useless crap you mentioned above.

just realised I never got the 2 DLC for Saints Row 4, I need to fix that. 66% on them at gamersgate, and I bet Steam wont have 75% this sale yet...hmmm

Valve as a company controlling the platform worries me.

Valve's arrogant response to the exploit is rather disquieting, especially in the wake of Heartbleed.

Edit: More people should play Zero Gear and get those achievements. I don't like that game clogging up my "Rarest achievements" showcase.

By the glory of Gaben, this exploit sounds apocalyptic - especially in the dawn of the Summer Sale.

Eh, well, I don't know.
I mean, I had the same reaction of yours as soon as I read the dev post, but then I realized that actually things are a bit different.

If I understood correctly, the issue here is that Valve allows javascript in Community Announcements, that AFAIK are "managed" directly by devs.

Now, I understand that allowing javascript to tons of people is never a good idea, but those same people are also the ones who release games for us to download.
And, you know, doing so they have way more "power" to hurt us than posting some javascript in their posts.

So, if Valve trusts them to release potential viruses to us, I guess they just trust them with full posting privileges too.

This said, I think Valve totally overreacted here, because it's clear the ETS2 dev did what he did in good faith, trying to warn Valve of this issue after months since he just told them about it and they didn't do shit (and I guess the reason they didn't is what I said before).

If any one of those dev accounts are compromised then it becomes a real problem though. Now that people know about the exploit the dev accounts are an extremely inviting target.

Yeah, but if a dev account is compromised, the "hacker" or whatever could both post some javascript hidden in a Community Announcements, and, like, patching one of the dev games with a full fledged virus...

So, again, if Valve is "forced" to trust devs with their games, why shouldn't they trust them with blogging privileges?

EDIT

Unless I misunderstand what happened, isn't that black hat or at the very least gray hat behavior on the part of the developer, to not let Valve know about the issue discreetly? Versus doing it very openly and making it known to any possibly malicious person?

As it seems, the dev privately notified Valve months ago, with no answers.

He did let them know discretely months ago. They declined to fix it because it is purportedly not a bug. This was responsible disclosure.

Well, I would assume that a person would only need access to a developer's account, not that they would need to be a developer for Steam themselves. After Heartbleed, which compromised Steam itself, they should have taken steps to fix the issue.

By punishing the ETS2 developer for revealing it, Valve was aware that the exploit could be abused. But they chose not to act, because it is easier to use security through obscurity than to actually fix the problem.

Valve's response of "We trust the developers" seems arrogant, because it suggests that Valve's judgment in accepting developers is perfect. We know that's not the case, and all we need to do to reaffirm this is take a look at the handful of games pulled from Steam for being scams or misleading.
