What is NEOTOKYO?
It is an FPS that takes place in a cyberpunk setting, heavily inspired by the series called Ghost in the Shell. Aesthetics range from urban city to lab/factory to old Japanese architecture. The game is a former source mod that is now available to anyone with Steam.

Just give me the OST!
http://ghostiq.com/neotokyo/
Streaming and full FLAC zip download provided in there which is already slow so I'm not going to direct link, it's completely free or you can give the artist Ed Harrison the cash for it in BUYING it HERE. The OST does not play in the game, I don't know why exactly.

So what is the gameplay like in NEOTOKYO?
The game play is somewhere between Day of Defeat Source along with game play tactics like Rainbow Six/SWAT.

What type of game modes are there?
Capture the Ghost
(TDM did exist in some form at some point but Capture the Ghost can end up being the same thing easily)

How many maps are there?
The game comes with around 20 or more.

How many and what kind of weapons is there?
Around 20 weapons including grenades, machine guns, rifles, and pistols.

What do i need to play?
Steam, download the game completely free, no extras, it's actually legit FREE.

Why does it look old?
The game was originally released 8 years ago for UT2004 before the Source upgrade was released in 2009. It was made by more or less 5 people.

Weapons & XP system
Weapon types include standard weapons such as pistols, sub machine guns, shotgun, heavy machine guns, assault rifles, semi-automatic rifles, long range scoped rifles. The game has a limited number of weapons you can choose upon joining a game or starting a new map. Think of it like gathering cash in Counter Strike except the value cannot go down. All 3 classes have mostly the same weapons available eventually but unlock in different order, I say mostly because only the Assault class can choose the final 3 unlocked weapons. XP is gathered by kills, assists, surviving or capturing the ghost yourself. The better you play, the more weapon choices will you have.

Game mode
The aim is to capture the Ghost and deliver it to the extraction point which is at the enemy starting zone, kind of like reverse CTF with 1 flag. The Ghost spawn varies, sometimes close to one team or somewhere between the two. Picking up the Ghost means dropping your primary weapon and prevents sprinting however equipping it in your hand grants the ability to see opponents locations through solid walls on the HUD up to 40m away, you can't fire your secondary while doing so and changing between the Ghost to another weapons means it takes several seconds to reinitialise the Ghost HUD functions when you swap back, so voice chat can become your biggest threat to the enemy team. The ghost is an instant delivery when you reach the destination. The game is round based so victory is declared for a team if they eliminate the entire enemy team before time runs out.

Tactical or rush?
Defining how NEOTOKYO is best played is difficult. Different maps will mean vastly different approaches, one popular map in particular allows one team to drop into the other team's spawn right right after spawning by jumping from a rooftop. A large share provide many routes and the the class differences can make it a guessing game to where the lines will be drawn or how they're fought for or whether you've exposed your flank. A good player will make more informed decisions but can still lose the gamble.

Squad system
The game uses a squad system for those who want to take things further or just play with friends using a simple HUD function. Pressing the F5 to F9 keys will assign you to squad Alpha, Bravo etc. Players in your squad appear listed at the top left of the screen and appear with a 5 squared symbol on screen as opposed to the standard 4 square for teammates outside your squad. Most people are just there to have fun and ignore the squad system so don't worry if you're a beginner, it's mostly useful for playing with people you know.

BUY the OST

(Post suggestions if you have any. Can't think of a witty title myself right now, maybe something concerning the game being free, catches the eye.)

Ask me about the GAF Notebook
Take your time and learn the maps. Use your death time wisely to scout out the map and see the ways other players are taking. Situational awareness is as important as reflexes in this game.

Also don't let anyone talk you into such and such class or wep is the best. All are equally viable. You just need to experiment and find what works best for you and your play style.

Slow and steady can do you wonders in this game vs just running crazy (even if you see other experienced players doing this).

Nice OT. Been a long time for me, but it was certainly one of the better mods of the source mod era.

Beautiful OP! I absolutely adore this game.

And maybe you can add this to the OP: http://www.cdbaby.com/cd/edharrison
It's a link to a store page where you can purchase the digital version of the AMAZING soundtrack of NEOTOKYO. It's 9.99 on cdbaby and includes Discs 1 and 2. The link in the OP has separate purchases for each disc at $5 each. The cdbaby link ends up being cheaper :)

I recommend purchasing the OST if you enjoy the music. Gotta support Ed Harrison! Sadly, the physical version is out of print (but I have a copy!)

Love the soundtrack (I own a physical copy) and I was so excited for the initial source launch. Game was disappointing though and I haven't played it since (was that 2010 or 2011?). Had some fun in the ut early days though and I definitely don't regret the soundtrack cd purchase. I guess this kinda gameplay just doesn't appeal to me anymore.

Is there a way to play the music in-game?

Some servers have a plugin for it, beyond that not really. 'Rain's server' is the pickup server where the dedicated few stuck around, typing !radio into chat will stream the OST. Not sure about anywhere else, I imagine most of the new servers won't have it.

Awesome game and the soundtrack is magic. Didn't Ed Harrison post a while back that he had a bunch of unreleased tracks that they planned on releasing in the future? I could have swore I read it here but I can't find a link.

Definitely my favourite sourcemod, The art direction in Neotokyo seems so much more competent than most commercial games.

"I only know this as the game that killed Dystopia....damn you neotokyo"

Dystopia is definitely the better game, but I don't think Neotokyo really killed it. Source mods simply never took off. Really, mods in general weren't taking off and it came out during the "dark ages" of PC gaming around 2005-2008 before Steam really picked up...steam. Insurgency, Neotokyo, etc. etc. All had a lot of hype that deflated really quickly.

Insurgency seems to have landed pretty well. Dystopia & Neotokyo not so much.

*Now* After they made a sequel and released it recently. When it came out in 2007? No way.

Great looking thread

Really fond memories of playtesting this back in '08. Glad to see it finally released on Steam after being greenlit more than a year ago. Should get some new active players that stick with it

Glad there's an OT for this. My all time favorite multiplayer FPS mod (not including mods that became standalones.)

Ah, didn't realize the one on the marketplace was some kind of sequel. Out of the three Insurgency is the one I spent the least amount of time with.

I've had the SDK installed for a long time, but I'm unable to uninstall it/remove it from the library list.

Mouse-over LIBRARY in Steam and go down to tools, if that's what the problem is.

It's seriously been 8 years? Holy hell, time really does fly.

I've clarified it was 8 years for UT2004 mod but 5 years for Source mod just in case some people needlessly feel their life is flashing by in the confusion!

Fun game and incredible soundtrack but does anyone else feel like the hit feedback is really low? I can't really tell if my shots are landing on an enemy and I'm not sure if this is a design choice or visual flaw.

Played a couple of matches eairler, and got beat down pretty bad. Will try to play some more tomorrow.

Yeah it seems nonexistent to me. I couldn't tell if I was actually hitting someone.

If you hit them they will give out blood splatters. Blood will also remain on them if they use optic camo making them easier to spot.

That is my favorite part of the soundtrack. Brilliant.

It's odd how such an amazing soundtrack just seems like a sort of afterthought in this game though. It's hidden behind a chat command and then overlaps other music and cuts off abruptly each round. Now that it's on steam I'm hoping they continue to add some more polish

Didn't know about the optic camo blood staying, that's a neat idea.

That piece is actually ingame on the round end for most servers. But yeah the other 2 or so hours are basically wasted.

Honestly I don't think about the hit confirmation stuff. You'll get a feeling for when things are hitting the more you play somehow at least and the only confirmation you need is them dropping like a sack of shit. I use the shotgun a lot, you can tell from a mile away when you tag them with it more often than not.

I should've known better.

The soundtrack is probably my favourite soundtrack for anything ever.
