Which do you prefer: Super Mario Galaxy series or Super Mario 3D series?

I've waited a while to ask this question, particularly to wait a bit after the launch of Super Mario 3D World to let it settle in, and avoid biases as best we can.

These games, while having similar elements (obviously, due to both being Mario action games), are quite different. Nintendo itself will revisit the Super Mario Galaxy formula in the future, but it remains to be seen when and how they will approach it. So which formula do you prefer? It'd help for the discussion if you list points on why you like it better, and what you don't like about the other series.

3D series for me. Maybe it's nostalgia for so much throwback. Galaxy series were masterpieces, but the controls never really felt super tight with the remote/nunchuck combo. Definitely a lot of creativity with Galaxy, but 3D series made me feel like a kid again.

Galaxy all the way too :p such brilliant platforming and bettetb graphics/art style than even 3d world IMO which was full of that weird Wii u lighting system.

I prefer Galaxy. The epic scale, no time limit, free exploration. Galaxy even has a handicapped multiplayer mode that my girlfriend (who sucks at platforming) can operate in a fun and engaging way.

3D

The 64/Sunshine/Galaxy series never really felt like Mario to me, even though it was fun. 3D is the natural progression of the 2D series.

3D World is a fantastic game with near perfect platforming, great level design and a fantastic visual look.

But Galaxy is all that (maybe even better) plus more. I'll be interested to see who thinks the opposite.

3D World was a delight to play through, a very high quality and polished platformer. Great game.

But for me Super Mario Galaxy 2 is the best 3D platformer of all time.

3D World definitely. It has the higher quality platforming and tighter level design. Galaxy feels grander and has more spectacle but I feel 3D world is more fun to play.

I enjoyed both. But I prefer the gathering of stars at the end of a level and revisiting it three times or more and accomplishing different platforming objectives to get a different star. The flag pole at the end of the stage and three star coins doesn't do it for me. I want SM64 or SMG style games for my console.

Definitely Galaxy.
I loved 3D Land and World but they were too linear compared to the Galaxy series.

What if it was offered as a launch title for the next Nintendo handheld platform (assuming it is graphically similar to Wii U).
you're assuming too much

64 style > Sunshine >>> Galaxy > 3D imho.
We really need a new Mario in the vein of 64/Sunshine.

This would be a surefire way to make me stop caring about 3D Mario again.

Galaxy, all day. It feels more inspired, creative, and works better as a single player game. Taking away analog control in 3D World was a big deal.

All of those games made by the same team. I think all 4 games are great and on the same tier if you ask me.

I can't decide between 2 sub series.

Both are amazing but Galaxy Series is one step further. One step further than pretty much every single Platform game that exists out there.

Galaxy by a good country mile. It's not even remotely close. Galaxy found a comfortable middle ground between the freedom of earlier 3D Mario and the linearity of 2D Mario. 3D Land/World slid way too close to the 2D side of it and forgot what made 3D Mario good to begin with, making them sit in a weird nebula where they hit the high points of neither 3D Mario nor 2D Mario.

Galaxy is a more groundbreaking, passionate game. Plus it had the energy of the Wii behind it. But it's kind of soured by the collect-a-thon grind issue that's plagued all of the "original" 3D Mario games.

3D is a more focused platformer and a better 3D translation of the "rules" of the Mario universe. But like most of the sequels on Wii U so far it feels like an adaptation more than it feels like its own thing.

I really wish we could get a game that's both passionate and groundbreaking while staying true to what has historically made the series so beloved.

Maybe if galaxy used a proper controller and ran on better hardware. Would love to see a wiiu in carnation, with best of both worlds.

This is a tough one.
I only played the original Galaxy, but I enjoyed 3D World a bit more.
Maybe this is because the whole "floating through space with an annoying sound" really didn't click with me.
They are both fantastic.

Definitely Galaxy, but that didn't stop 3D World from putting a big 'ol dumb smile on my face when I first played it at a Best Buy demo kiosk.

I really hope they make more Galaxies.

or Sunshine 2

I've only completed the first four worlds in 3D World, so my opinion is to be taken with caution. But so far, I'd rank the games like this:

Galaxy 1/2>>>>>3D Land>3D World

The Galaxy games play in their own league, basically.

3D World was fantastic but currently playing through Galaxy 2 for the first time and it's majestic. Hard to differentiate between the two in terms of quality.

ALso, they're both as linear as each other really, people would like you to believe that Galaxy is more like 64 but they're wrong, and I do miss the openness of 64 but these are Mario at his best.

Gameplay in the 3D series is closer to 2D Mario. So if you preffer 2D Mario to 3D Mario, the 3D series would be better (Hah).

Also, the 3D Series have much better art than the Galaxy games, with everything looking like the art from SMB3 or SMW.

I love both.

3DWorld will hold a special place in my heart forever as it was the first game I co-oped with my 4 Year Old daugther. She still plays it frequently.

Galaxy is amazing and I would love to have an HD Port of both on Wii U. Would have been a perfect time about now for it to release. Could have helped maintain the momentum started by MK8 until the Fall lineup starts hitting. Maybe one of these days we will get it!

Honestly neither (though i have not played the wii u 3d game). Last Mario game I really liked was 64.

Definitely Galaxy.
you're assuming too much

What am I assuming? He said he would play it if it were re-released in HD, so I asked if he would do the same for a handheld port.

Besides it's not like they never remade a 3D Mario game 8 years later for the launch of a new handheld platform before.
