Super Smash Bros. for 3DS & Wii U Thread 10: Against the Odds, We Choose to Hype!

The appearances in games that you listed above should be enough. I don't know if Sakurai meant anything more specific, but that didn't stop awesome characters like the Ice Climbers from making the cut.

Exactly. Which is why I still have some hope for something to happen. He meets all of the requirements that Sakurai has set out for characters.

Oh yeah. Also it was approved by Australian Board as well.

Oh really? Niice. That gives him even more of a chance, even if it doesn't increase it greatly. :3

^^Excellent post. The only thing I couldn't stand about Strikers Charged was the single player mode. You had to do something like 10 matches, and around match 8, you entered the elimination round against an absurdly difficult team. If you lost, you were kicked out of the tournament and had to start all over again. For that alone SC is one of the most frustrating games I can think of.

Is someone disputing the excellency of Strikers Charged? For shame.

I'll have you know that I lost to Petey in the Strikers Cup and only cried for twenty minutes.

Thanks. :)

I don't remember much of the single-player because I mainly stuck to co-op. A buddy and I would challenge the world together online. Our main frustration was opponents who used Luigi and steamrolled us with his supersize power.

Speaking of the final match, I barely beat petey on my first try by some insane miracle. The CPU put up a crazy challenge.

Maaaan, I can't believe that things aren't looking great for Takamaru right now. May of last year prior to the game's unveiling, I made a note of which characters I was super, SUPER sure would get in, and they were Takamaru, Little Mac, Palutena, Shulk and Mewtwo. Takamaru just seemed like such a sure thing at the time, given how many cameo appearances he had been making since Brawl, and being in Nintendoland was the kicker. Mewtwo I can look back on and say "oh yeah well I was just riding the 'Newtwo' hype at the time" but damnnnn Takamaru should've been a lock. What happeneddddddd

i mean i know we don't know for sure yet but still

Peach can't help that she's fabulous.

1. These alts need to be in the game.
2. I want a sequel on Wii U.

That single player was absolutely brutal. I think I only made it to Petey once or twice; usually I got steamrollered by Diddy or Waluigi.

But it's been a number of years, so I should dust it off again. Who knows, maybe I'll have an easier time now?
yeah right I'll lose the second match

I felt the same way about those characters (except I was a little bit iffy about Palutena and Shulk at the time), and I still do. I'm pretty confident that we'll see Mewtwo and Takamaru, but as hidden characters. Both of them feel like they would be best suited to being unlockable. Mewtwo already was in his last Smash Bros. appearance, and Takamaru fits perfectly as the unlockable retro character for this game, like Mr. Game & Watch and R.O.B. before him.

OK, done eating and both hands freed. Lemme elaborate on why Strikers is so great.

First, watch this video. It's the FMV opening to the game, which establishes the surprisingly dark and edgy atmosphere. You have brooding thunderstorms, scorched landscapes, exploding turf, driving wind and rain, bloodthirsty crowds, electric fences, and armor-clad warriors beating the shit out of each other, hellfire in their eyes (literally)! They manage to maintain the Mario brand's playful charm while offering up this hard-hitting style that is SO refreshing after the bland homogeneity of just about every other Mario spinoff out there.

And this is maintained all throughout the game, with exceedingly clever stadium venues where, for example, referees watch the game from atop Blooper towers, or cows and tractors go tumbling by, Twister-style, as the game plays out atop a wind-whipped cliff. The loading screens rumble with ominous bass drums meant to evoke thunder, and the menus are depicted in futuristic holograms that make you think you're playing Mario vs. Judge Dredd (which I would totally fucking play, let me tell you).

The gameplay in Strikers is the real deal, too. You really feel each bone-crunching blow. Let me emphasize that phrase: bone-crunching blow. I mean, you're shoulder-checking fools with generous hit-stun, into lightning barriers that then immolate them on the spot, while you steal away with the ball and blast it back and forth between your team, which can consist of any combination of Koopas, Hammer Bros, Dry Bones, Boos, Monty Moles, etc. They all have unique abilities, like Hammer Bros unleashing a flurry of hammers, Monty Moles burrowing to the goal, Boos absorbing the ball and phasing through the other team, etc. And then you have your captain, which can be anyone from Waluigi doing "suck it" crotch chops, to Daisy literally licking her finger and touching her ass and releasing steam. These guys wield superpowers, like Waluigi whipping the ball with a thorny black vine, or Daisy encasing her fist in spiky crystals before punching the ball in a Super Saiyan volley.

Then as the goaltender (Kritter, the Kremling), you point the Wiimote at the screen and tag each incoming ball with pinpoint precision, striking down all that you can during the Charge Shot sequences that can net the enemy multiple points if you're not careful. It takes fast reflexes and is exceedingly satisfying to block every shot. In a hypothetical WiiU sequel, I wouldn't mind them using the GamePad in shield mode for similar purposes.

And man, that's what the Strikers series deserves -- a sequel on WiiU. It's an incredibly fun multiplayer game since it's all on a single screen, like Smash, so it would only benefit from the clarity of HD. You and a buddy can team up in local co-op in Charged and go online together to challenge other teams. I can't stress enough how fun this is (or was, before they shut down online services). Every match is harrowing and intense. Rarely in my experience is it a blowout. I suppose it also helps that there are Mario Kart-style items, but they hardly feel unfair or overpowered compared to how they can sometimes be in the Kart series. They're second fiddle, really, next to the captain powers and abilities of your handpicked team.

Strikers Charged is AMAZING. Best Mario spinoff not named "Kart." Depending on my mood, it may even exceed MK.

I read stuff like this and was totally disappointed by the game. Good presentation is about all it's good for. This post is ridiculously exaggerated.

Or, possibly, we have different tastes in games. I had a blast with Charged. And I stand by everything I said.

And really, not much you can call an exaggeration when the scenarios and content I described are literally in the game. I'll leave people who haven't played it to check out videos on YouTube and see for themselves.

Charged is well-worth checking out. It's so refreshing compared to other Mario spinoffs.

I disagree.

Strikers was and is the best Mario sports spinoff ever made and I would buy a sequel day fucking one. Between Strikers and Punch-Out Next Level Games did wonders with the Wii.

Srikers Charged was definitely a close second to Smash for my most played multi-player game on the Wii. A sequel for the Wii U would be just the best thing ever.

Found the crotch chop and the blooper tower in one convenient gif:

EDIT: Erm, never mind about the blooper tower, it's only visible for a splitsecond

I wasn't a fan of either Strikers game aside from the absurdly over-the-top presentation and the cool art. The robots from the first game were cool though.

Mario Super Sluggers and Mario Golf World Tour are my favorite Mario spinoffs <:)

I prefer Super Mario Strikers to Charged mainly for the game speed, since it felt faster than the sequel (though that might have been because it's controller based instead of having silly waggle mechanics).

Still, a new Strikers would be the greatest thing since we're really lacking in arcade sports games. They also need to bring back Mario Sluggers for 3DS at least.

When I think of the "feel" of Charged, I always think of checking people into the fences. Also, back-and-forth volleys supercharging the ball for a blast into the net. Or the AOE of Crystal Smash:

Sorry guys, wish I played the same game you were playing (in all fairness, I never got a chance to play human opponents). I found the controls frustrating, the music repetitive, and just not very fun. I much preferred Mega Man Soccer.

Hopefully but I had a doubt tho.

All you wishy-washy Takamaru supporters should be ashamed. Go all in and stay steadfast in your belief/hype or stay home. *folds arms*

Well there's a good indicator why your mileage varied. I was nearly always playing with other humans, in local and online co-op and versus.

Gotta disagree about the music, though. The sound design in Charged is soooooo good. It's very minimalist, the music only kicking in when the clock's ticking down or one team gets the advantage. Otherwise it's just the din of the crowd, the wailing of vuvuzelas, the sound of storm sirens, of howling wind, pouring rain, crashing thunder... So atmospheric! I like it when a game can make me feel chilly. :)

...and I'd love for Smash to be similarly atmospheric. Give us a Charged stage, Sakurai!

You better believe I'd be down for this; I still want her to get a Luigi costume alt, although I feel that'd get confusing.

And hell yeah to Strikers alts and a Wii U Sequel!

And 1KE is good, Death Note abridge continues when?? ;-;

Never it seems, dude says he gonna work on it but he never does. And started over before, that shit aint never gonna get done. The only one who does consistent abridge work on their team is nowaking, that and pony stuff.

A note of hope for Takamaru:

Mysterious Murasame Castle came out in Europe, didn't it? Maybe Australia, as well? And perhaps it'll come to the U.S. at some point.

That, along with Takamaru's Ninja Castle in the global release that is Nintendo Land, seem to suggest a comeback might be possible.

To be fair, a game celebrating one's love of various Nintendo series will inevitably lead to talk about those series.

Everything comes back to Smash soon enough. It's just something to discuss before the hard analysis of PotD later tonight.

With our VC? It took us a year after everywhere else just to get Mario 3; as much as I'd buy it, and as much as I think it'd sell, we aren't getting Mystery of Murasame Castle on our disappoint VC.

No excuses. Let stick with Smash Bros discussions, if anyone have nothing to says about smash bros, then refrain to post off-topics here please. That's why I felt annoyed when I had to read few pages of off-topic discussions when I woke up in the morning sometime.

What's so appealing about Takamaru? He looks so generic. Granted, Sakurai could give him the Pit treatment and completely redesign him. But I just don't see how he can fit in Smash.

Serious? The guy is a spell-casting ninja samurai, and you think Sakurai would struggle to give him a move-set?

Man, if Takamaru is tough to make a move-set for, imagine how hard it'd be for Wii Fit Trainer!

*Neiteio looks at the roster. WFT disappears from the roster, Back to the Future-style*

Nooooooooooo!

Well naruto abridged wasn't that great in the first place. And then it got worse, and they they stopped, and then one of the guys who did it the vegeta one stopped abridging because of real life. I hear the one that is left is trying to restart that though , if you are interested in that.

This guy has a samurai sword. Samurai is one of the auto correct options for "Sakurai". Takamaru confirmed.

In the NES game he uses mainly a katana and shuriken but also fireballs, an explosive that fills the entire screen with lightning and a cloak that turns him invisible. Enough to base a compelling moveset on.

Takamaru is unique because he's a samurai AND a ninja. He also wields magic. And his Famicon game had awesome music. And a pagoda silhouetted against the full moon with cherry blossoms raining down would be an amazing stage.

He's also one of the Famicon Four, along with Link, Samus and Pit. The gang must be reunited!

He's right though, it's Smash, we're bound to go off-topic and it's fine to talk about something off-topic. It just happens way too often in the thread I think though.

Some protagonists in Smash can be called generic within their own games, but in Smash, they all bring in something unique (okay, maybe not all, but you should get the idea).

Oh, the Famicom Four theory.

I want to believe.
