LittleBigPlanet 3 will be targeting 1080p/60fps on the PS4

I can see the word "targeting" becoming an overused term this generation. It already annoys me.

While you're at it, could you make it less floaty?

They HAVE tightened the jumping mechanic up slightly but they can't tighten it too much or it would break a lot of user created levels. You could always use animations from the other three characters to make Sackboy jump slightly differently. Small Toggle looks to jump more quickly and a greater distance for instance.

This is the bare minimum that's expected....

While I agree it should be standard this gen...1080p/60FPS is literally the maximum possible resolution and framerate of most TVs. It's really hard to call it a bare minimum. I mean, supersampling would be nice but...SMAA is more practical.

Platforming physics will still be ass, though .

I'll never understand why people who has no interest in a game will go into a thread to shit post or be "concerned". I probably won't even get the game, but I at least know some details about the game from E3 and a thread on here where one of the developers gave some detailed information on the changes to the controls.

Go read the impressions from people who played the game or that E3 LBP3 thread.

Looking forward to this one. I was hoping it would be LBP3D, as in, 3D world builder. But it looks like MM is making that too so I guess its OK.

I know! I'm used to Mario and I think Mario is the best platform game ever and every platformer should look and feel like Mario in every single way. Oh look another NSMB game thats exactly like the game I played 20 years ago. YES!!!

Considering what they are giving us I would hope so. I have owned every version of the game but I may skip this one. I don't see the additions of new characters as something interesting enough to validate the purchase.

Honest question: is "targeting" going to be the new key term for developers this gen? Seen that word pop up in a couple of thread titles now...

It's what they say during development when they're not there yet. It's being honest. IT's something Sony devs seem to say a lot - Sony likes that open dev PR>

Arne mentioned that Sony wants them to use it in order to avoid backlash if there wind up being occasional drops. It still means that they are working to make a 60fps game, I think it's just something the legal department insists on. I see no reason why LBP3 wouldn't be able to easily hit that on PS4.

LBP3 @ 60fps would be glorious. They should prioritize that over 1080p.
I would think they will prioritize both and modify graphical complexity and effects to reach these benchmarks.

This isn't the sort of game you want to be dealing with framerate drops in. Should hopefully be a solid(or near enough) 60fps.

Going by what Arne said in one of the TLOU's threads, it's just a term to avoid legal issues. Apparently Sony doesn't want their studios saying that any of their games will have locked 60FPS, understanding that it will never be consistent.

So that's why.
Makes sense though.

they have to say "targeting" because if they say locked 60fps and there's even one dip to 59FPS they will get torn apart.

I'm actually more interested in this game now that it may be 60fps

I'd hope so, it's a cross-gen game.

As is Assassins Creed, Destiny, Metal Gear Solid, COD, and a host of other sub 1080p, sub 30 fps, or 900p now 1080p later/unpatched games. Cross gen doesn't mean auto 1080p 60fps. But in this case its MM and it's PS4, so you right, dawg. you right.

Targetting 60 also allows them to do what they should do.

I'd rather they aim for 60 and hit it 99% of the time, than optimize to make the game run 60FPS 100% of the time (which means they would have to optimize for the rare times the frame rate drops to ensure locked 60)...

I'll wait for the new-gen only LBP, then. Hope they let us make things without sackboys easier that time around. I don't like them sackboys.

I think being 'cross gen' is a bit misunderstood in some cases. Some people seem to treat it like its a last-gen game just ported up to new hardware with a mere higher resolution or something. But many cross-gen games are actually built for next-gen as the priority but are then scaled down for older hardware, sometimes even by a different team altogether.

I'm not saying that's the case here, but it seemed like you were under the impression that cross-gen means something it doesn't.

Anyways, really great news. The more 60fps, the merrier. I want people to get accustomed to it to where everybody complains when they don't get it! :p

The thing is, if they're developing it with the intention of it being a cross-generation game - I don't think it matters as much which will be the lead platform and which way porting goes (up or down).

What matters is that they'll have a baseline experience that will be the same across both platforms, it's rare that you'd see in instances like these that a simultaneously releasing current gen version will be a significantly different experience on the more powerful console than the less powerful one.

The core design of the game will remain the same across both platforms - and that is why, most of the time it is not surprising and to be expected a cross generation game is just a better performing and looking version of the last gen. That's why it's expected, not because of up/down porting. Of course, it being cross-generation isn't the only factor, they could have easily done a lot more graphically that had them sacrificing framerate - but I just left that as a given, due to the fact that it's just a LittleBigPlanet sequel.
