Microsoft Q4: 1.1M XBO/360 Shipped

I wouldn't use historical sales as a measuring stick because sales for both PS3 and Xbox 360 are winding down to make way for the new boys.

Nope. At least that's what's happening to the 360 in the US according to NPD and to Microsoft's own fiscal reports that doesn't show a plummeting in 360's sales during Q3.

500-600k seems accurate shipments for X1. 700k at most.

Not even close.

Wii U Shipments:

1 month, 14 days: December 31st, 2012: 3.06 million
4 months, 14 days: March 31st, 2013: 3.45 million
7 months, 13 days: June 30th, 2013: 3.61 million
10 months, 13 days: September 30th, 2013: 3.91 million
1 year, 1 month, 14 days: December 31st, 2013: 5.86 million

Xbox One Shipments:

3.9 million LTD worldwide shipped Xbox One consoles - As of December 31st, 2013
5.1 million LTD worldwide shipped Xbox One consoles - As of March 31st, 2014
<6 million LTD worldwide shipped Xbox One consoles - As of June 30th, 2014

What took the Wii U 1 year to achieve, Xbox One achieved it in 7 months.

The difference is that those Nintendo figures are sales, not shipments. Like I've said above, I don't think they've sold more than 4.6m which means that launches aligned Microsoft have only sold around 1m more consoles than Nintendo at the moment.

Price drop for September then.

I think price is still the bigger issue. While $400 is a huge step in the right direction, don't get me wrong, you can still get a system with better multiplatform titles and better hardware for the same amount of money. There's no real value proposition for the Xbone at $400.

No. Both Nintendo and Microsoft report sell-in (shipments) to retailers.

Sony is the console manufacturer that's been reporting sell-through to consumers as PR releases, but even they use sell-in in their financial results meetings.

Psh, Microsoft will be laughing all the way to the bank when the true launch of the Xbox One is achieved with 26 more countries this September. Don't forget DirectX12 is on the way, and that's a game changer, alongside cloud computations. Can't wait to see everyone's jaw drop when the Xbox One outsells the PS4 in Japan. Oh, and don't forget the Chinese market!

It'll be fiiiiine!

Actually, in all seriousness, the new markets will likely make at least some sort of impact.

Like everyone knows, there's no chance Microsoft can reach first, so it's a battle for how well they do in second. They still can do OK with a killer slew of games in America, as long as they keep price parity. And they do have a compelling lineup in the future, so I think it'll be a good second place system. Maybe 50 million by the end? I'm just throwing out a random prediction here, haven't really calculated any projections based on current trajectories or anything :p

Now that the price has dropped and Microsoft is going to have its comparatively impressive Holiday season of games, I think they'll do better going forward. Relatively speaking, anyway. Next year I mean.

This is good news for retailers, fewer and less massive Xbox One piles to pose as safety hazards to customers/employees.

I expect big numbers in Japan this fall.

Here's the thing though: The Xbox One is already regularly available for $350. Right now at Target nationwide a $399 Xbox One comes with a $50 gift card. Deals like this happen all the time. You'd have to be a sucker to pay full price for this thing.

A price drop doesn't work if the unofficial price is already below $399.

Its so obviously rest of Europe/non UK. Which is a gigantic market, second to NA only.

Ive been saying this, i was saying in regards to Wii U a year ago too: The XB1 is invisible here, it garners very little room in major retailers, while PC, PS3 and PS4 garner the most, almost no ads on TV, demo kiosks none to be found.

My trip to German featured more 360 presence than XB1. While PS4 section was as if Sony owned the damn store.

Even the shit early era of PS3 of creepy babies, Spiderman font had some presence. The XB1 does not even have that.

The software charts in Germany show some of this, the local charts here never feature a single XB1 game, not even FIFA on XB1 can climb that chart. Even the Wii U can get Mario Kart 8 up there

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
If Xbox One continue selling that much more in US than the rest of the world, give your welcome to the new N64 / Xbox, sales-wise.

It seems that the only company that is not afraid to show shitty sales is Nintendo. In that sense, kudos to them for their transparency.

Not sure what you do tbh. Maybe best to just dig in for the long haul. Get the games out there to bring people in, and reduce price as time goes on. They've never been up against a strong brand with a strong value proposition head to head like this - there aren't any easy options that don't involve Nadella writing a huge cheque (which they are unlikely to do)

This is their 'prove yourself' generation, like Sony had last gen with PS3. Show us it is worth buying, show us you won't go back on the DRM, show us you won't stop investing in a broad range of quality first party titles after three years.

That's scenario for vegetation which Nintendo chosen for Wii U.

It's time to write that cheque - 100$ price drop before launch in tier 2 countries and big software releases of holidays quarter is probably their last chance.

They have xbox live golden parachute to cover those costs over next few years.

It's time for the LocoCycle bundle.

Could certainly be interesting but this generation has only just started. Hell, I never thought MS would beat the lifetime Wii units but its happening. Such a weird race where the start and middle are way more interesting than the actual end because people just look at new runners instead o the old ones crossing the line.

360 cumulative shipment at end of March 2014: 83.7m
360 cumulative shipment at end of May 2014: Over 84m

360 shipment until end of May 2014: > 0.3m

XB1 shipment at end of June 2014: < 0.8m - [what 360 shipped in June]

XB1 cumulative shipment at end of June 2014: < 5.9m - [what 360 shipped in June]

That doesn't look good.

Sounds to me like they channel stuffed those Kinect SKUs last quarter, and now they're waiting before throwing a load more into stores.
I expect MS will see some good numbers during the holiday season.
Yea, this is what I'm hoping these poor shipment numbers mean, as well. The XB1 is still selling ok in the US, so it's not like sales fell off a cliff. Sounds like they stuffed the channels something fierce earlier in the year to keep up appearances of staying competitive with the PS4.

Allow me to indulge my own stupidity for a moment. In some extreme scenario where Nintendo creates a 199.99 or less sku for the Wii U, and gamers fall in love with their lineup in addition to Smash, is it possible for Nintendo to pass the Xbox One in 2015 or beyond? I'm guessing Halo Collection this year probably prevents any chance of that scenario happening, but a second place Wii U would be something interesting.

Would have thought there'd be a late burst of shipments at the end of the quarter in preparation for the price cut.

Or maybe there was and the early part of the quarter was just nothing.

Or maybe there was just a lot of stock in the channel already.

It's quite possible XBO managed to go below PS3's worst ever quarterly shipment. Maybe.

Microsoft hurt themselves by not pushing anything coming out this summer. Sony had MLB: The Show in May, they marketed Watch Dogs which has worked out well for them, they have The Last of Us Remastered coming out next week which will help move some consoles, and then Destiny between the marketing, exclusive content, and bundle, will do extremely well for them.

Outside of a real price cut, I see a holiday Master Chief Collection bundle, sensibly priced, as being their next opportunity to at least seriously bump sales in the US. If they're smart about it, that could be a real catalyst for the holidays.

Digging in is great, but they need to do more.

I think a combination of digging in for the long haul and being more aggressive in terms of price cuts or bundles is the best move to help stimulate demand.

A £350/$400/400Euro X1 bundled with two games and three months of Gold would be a good start.

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.

Nintendo has not yet reached the price point to be a strong contender as a gamer's second console. GCN sold pretty well as a "me too" console to gamers once the price got down. Wii-U is still a bit too pricey to do it. I think $199 would see it sell really well to possibly end up with GCN numbers.
