Sega Saturn Appreciation and Emulation Thread

okay, one more time and i swear i'll stop asking: what are the differences between US & JP saturn bomberman again? i know the language barrier in menus/story mode and like, 2 multiplayer maps was it? also which version/cover should i be looking for if settling for JP?

If you dont mind me asking, how much did he win them for?

$93 and $112 respectively. Both had the inserts and sticker, with the more expensive one having a visible flaw with the manual. Both also more then I wanted to pay, but I'm sure the game will climb up even higher soon.

The JP version is missing Netlink support and has 27 multiplayer stages instead of 36.

I was watching them too. Really kicking myself for passing on a complete one (with sticker) and guide for $85 a few months ago. One of the biggest blunders o' my life. I did pick up a complete Shining Force 3 for $70 recently.

The second release of the JP Saturn Bomberman (called Saturn Bomberman for SegaNet) restores the additional 9 stages from the NA version according to this. http://segaage.com/forum/messageview.cfm?catid=45&threadid=120239

...a gaffer just sold me a disc only version of Burning Rangers for $30 last night, i'm still pretty hyped about it!

Do NOT get JP Saturn Bomberman for Seganet. You'll only be able to play the caravan mode on the disc. I learned this the hard way!

If it's the same version I'm thinking of, then it's missing the Story Mode, though. And I'm not even sure if the versus mode can be played offline in that version. Someone in this thread owned a copy and could probably confirm. I know it's come up before. EDIT: Well there you go.

Order of release:
JPN release - no online play, 27 VS stages
PAL release - all JPN content plus 9 extra VS stages
USA release - all PAL content plus Netlink compatibility
JPN SegaNet release - all Battle/Master content from USA version with SegaNet support, but no Story Mode

Someone could try their luck with the Satakore re-release, but I'd wager that it's identical to the first Japanese release.

Nice breakdown. Thanks for the info!

So it's either PAL or American, depending on if you want the Netlink or not.

Can you even use Netlink today?
I know it's at least somewhat functional since it supports direct-dial. You don't have to connect to a server or anything.

US Netlink games are still playable because the US Netlink uses direct dial. Japanese Netlink or Xband games are not because they have to dial in to a server.

I've never played Final Fight - Revenge on Saturn, or the Saturn-based ST-V coin-op arcade machine-- And the ST-V arcade version isn't yet working in MAME from what I can tell.

So what's the ideal Saturn emulator to use on Windows 7 x64 that'll run one or the other versions, and isn't too much of a pain in the ass to set up ?

I know FF Revenge didn't set the video game industry on fire, but it's gotta be better than Final Fight: Streetwise on PS2.

Edit: Nevermind. I don't think I'll bother finding a way to play Final Fight Revenge
-All this time I had thought it was a 3D polygon beat 'em up, that just wasn't very good. I didn't realize it's just a one-on-one VS fighting game.

yeah i just came across the Diehard Gamefan review of that Final Fight game, and damn even the Saturn Defense Force camp couldn't say anything nice about it

ah thanks for this! hmmm since story mode would've been in japanese either way, the 2nd JP version might be the way to go for more maps.

PAL one does sound great but i recall it being pricey as well

On top of it not being a beat em up, its also probably the worst game capcom released on the saturn.

It.is a very expensive turd only for collectors.

It's too bad the original Final Fight was not included on one of the Capcom Generation discs for Saturn & PS1.

Better yet, FFCD should''ve been remade on Saturn with arcade assets plus more and better intro, ending and cut scenes.

on the same note, I would have much preferred a Saturn port of Revenge of Death Adder over Golden Axe The Duel

Same here.

Playing Revenge of Death Adder along with 3 other people in the arcades was so much fun, like doing the same with Dungeons & Dragons Tower of Doom or Shadow over Mystara.

I remember crowds around a machine at the Cyber Station arcade in Niles, Illinois at Golf Mill. What a great game.

Everything besides the Caravan/Master mode is locked behind the Japanese Seganet servers which are dead in that release. You won't get access to any of the other content besides Caravan/Master Mode. Don't bother with the Seganet version.

I've had a couple problems emulating Enemy Zero. I was fine for a while, but then got to a point where a scientist says, "You look a bit dazed," which I got stuck on loop on and can never get passed. I accidentally when trying emulator things deleted my save file, but upgraded the emulator, and now when I play the game, it randomly crashes on cutscenes.

Any advice for best settings for the emulator for a game like Enemy Zero?

Today was a good day for me. Got a clean bill of health from my doctor so I wanted to celebrate by getting some games. I intended on buying a dedicated Super Nintendo so I could start a SNES/SFC collection but the merchant didn't have a system. Instead, he was categorizing six Saturn games. Three of them were crappy sports titles but three were not. I got these three for $15 total.

Manx TT and STCC were complete down to the warranty cards and in the case of STCC the Netlink tournament playing times flyer. Both discs were in pristine condition.

I was warned by the merchant that Daytona was an empty case but I didn't care because I needed a case to replace my horrible condition Saturn Bomberman box. It was scratch to high hell with residue I could never remove on the front, and hairline cracks in the back.

Cleaned the Daytona case with Windex and tranferred the SBM contents to the replacement case. Looks much better.

I took some time to compare Tomb raider, between the PAL optimised Saturn and the DOS version in DOSBox. What I was interested in was comparing the screen size and the speed. While the PAL optimised has more vertical space and can show more scenery, it definitely runs much slower than the DOS version. I made Lara run in a straight line on the same map and she definitely has a faster pace in DOS.

Interestingly they have the same aspect ration in windowed 320x200 (widescreen-ish ratio on modern screens). Switching to 60Hz on the Saturn makes a taller and thinner Lara, equivalent to the 320x200 stretched to 4:3 as intended on old VGA monitors. [edit] pressing F1 goes into "hi-res" mode of 640x480, where the screen estate and aspect ratio is identical to PAL Saturn. So there's that.

In conclusion, Tomb raider on Saturn is PAL optimised in terms of screen size only: we don't have black bars anymore. However the speed is not corrected and the PAL version runs slower than the original. Switching the Saturn game to NTSC is not recommended as the pictures stretches downwards only instead of stretching both up and down as usual.

It was developed by brits, initially as an exclusive Saturn game, yet they completely failed to make a product fitted to their original market. I read here and there how European-developed games could have a correct speed in PAL and play too fast in NTSC, well, this is definitely not the case here. Disappointed.

Do I need to play through Shining Force and Shining Force II before playing Shining Force III? Will I be missing out on a lot plot-wise? It doesn't seem so but I figured I'd check.

I'll start up either that or Dark Savior while I wait for some other stuff to get here I think.

You might want to play Shining the Holy Ark, as it's a direct prequel to Shining force III.

Oh wow, I've had both for years and never realized lol. I don't know if I'm feeling a dungeon crawler right now but that's good to know!

Yeah.

Shining Force II & Shining Wisdom both kind of lead into Holy Ark.

holy crap, this is all news to me!
i kinda gave up on II with the #$@%ing Kraken battle, so i'm just about to finish Book 1 of Shining Force CD (which i assume ties in somehow? i forget, might be a Gaiden but it's an enjoyable one so far), guess i'll hit up Wisdom, then Holy Ark (the one that looks like a return to Shining in the Darkness) all before SF III?

at least (i think) chapters 2 & 3 of SF III are finally translated, no?

While we're at it, in the Darkness leads into Shining Force [1], which leads into Shining Force CD. Dunno if it's related to Shining Force II, though.

I think I had it backwards, actually. Mephisto, the villain of Shining in the Darkness ("Dark Sol" in the English version), is the son of Darksol (different character obv.) and Mishaela (the villains of Shining Force).

Can you even use Netlink today?

The North American release was significantly delayed to include support for the very different NetLink modem, a 28k modem released for the SEGA Saturn in North America that used direct-dial technology to connect players directly to one another as opposed to a server-based system. As with all NetLink games players dial one another directly over telephone lines and as such battle 'online' with surprisingly little lag time; and as with all NetLink games it remains as such 'online forever', outlasting all other console-based online Bomberman titles including Bomberman Online for the Saturn's successor, the SEGA Dreamcast.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Saturn_Bomberman

It is the Bomberman of the Forever.

Hey guys, if anyone is interested, I just found an unused universal modchip for the Saturn in my PC motherboard box.

I'll sell it for £15 inc shipping. UK only, but I may be able to ship to the US.

Got no use for it.

I just received it this morning! Thank you very much. It's now installed and working perfectly, although I scared myself stupidly. After the installation it played a backup without any problem, but when I moved the console back to its shelf and tried an original game, it wasn't detected as a Saturn game! It turns out I forgot to isolate the chip from the metallic plate it's resting on. Silly mistake, after some ducktape the console is working flawlessly again.

Wouldn't that murder your phone bill?

I have a method of connecting 56k modems to a broadband router using a phone line simulator.

Me and a buddy actually played a few saturn games online a year ago this way. It requires a specific phone line simulator and router. I have like 10 spare routers if anybody is actually interested in this going down, I bought them in bulk.

That's interesting. I didn't realize there was a workaround.
