TLOU Remastered: 30 fps option gives better shadow quality [Up: Comparison GIF in OP]

I leave this thread for ONE day and everyone has lost their fucking minds. Holy shit @ some of these meltdowns.

The game is EXACTLY what it was supposed to be - TLOU at 1080p/60fps. It looks really fucking good. It looks better than the PS3 one. No one is trying to lie to your or steal your money or whatever you think they're doing.

Can't wait for the 29th so this shit can be over with.

Yep some people are really making a drama out of this game treating it as if it was a remake supposed to push the PS4 to the limits. Emmm I guess it's exactly what it was supppsed to be, a remaster.
It's the PS3 game at 1080p and 60fps and extra texture detail and that's it. If it's not good enough and you expected a full remake with U4 like graphics just don't buy it.
I think btw that until people play the game on their TVs the impact of the improvements is being understimated, still keeping in mind that it's a remaster though.

The GIF shows a pretty noticable difference, but I'd still rather play it in 60fps. Honestly if it weren't for that comparrison I'd say that the 60fps shadows still look good. They're a little fuzzy, but whatever.

But then again I'm the same kind of person who doesn't give a shit about resolutions and what not.

I like how the conversation went from "The game must perform like shit and can't hold 60fps!" to "Omg, look! There are a total of 3 shadows missing! pre-order cancelled!"

Something tells me that the people nitpicking this hard had no intention of ever buying the game....

Why is the sunlight from 30fps mode clearer/brighter? Maybe there is a lighting difference too?

Jk I just saw the close up I'm so sorry

But seriously shadows get softer at distances and depending on how direct the light is but obviously the 30fps version has the technically superior shadows.

I'll start with 60fps and test 30fps after a couple of hours.

The problem is that when you turn around to check for enemies as you slowly walk around you can't see shit thanks to the image updating every 32 ms. Doing a spin at a constant rate is the #1 killer for my eyes with 30 fps. I died (metaphorically) in last of us everytime I had to look around.

exactly. the image turns to mush when you move the camera at 30 fps. how anyone can downplay or not notice that fact is beyond me.

Maybe I'm dense, but how do you people even notice this in a game? Like, if you boot up TLOU, you would really notice this? Not that I don't care, I just don't think I'd ever notice in a million years. Guess I'm dumb.

I've gotta say. I'm watching the making of documentary right now, and TLOU was already a ridiculously good looking game. I'm not sure how I feel.

I feel like it got put in exclusively to help photo mode shots.

From the pics ron bato post i would say it does look that clean and his pics don't have the patch .
If want it that sharp use your tv settings lol .

Because those have a sharpening filter applied to them anyways. It still looks amazing
Not saying the PS4 version looks bad but the press release "screens" are still bullshots and very obviously downsampled. They're sharpened and you still can't see any jaggies like there's been in almost all PS4 screenshots. Like on Joel's collar. Also, grass and foliage probably don't look that good in-game.

More discussion from my friend with the game, the tree was moving, not static. Static shadows aren't as noticeably different, I'll be uploading em' in a few minutes.

Makes sense. Dynamic shadows will be noticeably improved but the static shadows are very similar. They didn't rewrite the game to have entirely dynamic lighting.

Game could lack shadows and I'd still play it on 60fps.

Sadly I won't be though cause I'm dirt poor and don't own a PS4 but yeah.

There's still a noticeable difference in these pics, but not nearly as pronounced. In the first comparison, you can barely even tell.

I had to look very closely to see the difference in those new shots a couple posts up. 30fps shadows are slightly softer but it's slight.

Oh great, can't wait to get high and spend the first 30 minutes of my time with the remake flipping back and forward between the 30 and 60 options trying to decide which mode to play it. :/

This is what I was thinking. The tree moving plus more (60) fps may have made the image seem "choppier" in a sense. So it may look better in motion and 30 fps moving shadow may come off better in a still image. Of course the 30 will look better since ND says so but maybe not so drastic a difference when seen in motion as opposed to a still image.

I have no idea what i'm talking about and am ashamed of myself for looking this deep into this.

There's barely any difference in these shots. It's crazy that people who have access to the game only want to pick the unfavorable ones and make it seem like that's how it looks throughout the game

Thanks for the comparisons. Going by that first one I was definitely considering dropping to 30fps but after seeing these, if that difference is representative of the game for most of the time (save for a few rougher spots) I will definitely stick with 60.

Great comparison. Anyone that's willing to give up half the framerate for that, man, I dunno...

Yeah, really the only one of this set that I can really tell much of a difference is the 3rd set of pics, just the shadow on Joel's arm looks a bit more jagged, but I'm not sacrificing framerate for slightly better shadows

That difference is tiny IMO. I can tell, but it's not something that will be noticeable during actual gameplay. Definitely nowhere near enough to sacrifice the smoothness of 60fps.

I'll just play it at 60fps. The shadow thingy is barely noticeable, unless you play games with your face 4 inches from the screen. This is really making a mountain out of a mole hill.
