Also, the US isn't the only civilized country in the world, and you don't see Ebola breaking out there.

Except transmission of basically anything isn't that easy or everyone would already be dead of many things.

based on a general idea? Because this is how it spread. This is one of the many reasons we have immune systems. Because things often get into our systems via mucous membranes. Tell schools with viral pink eye ravaging through the yard that its ok to have them rubbing their eyes during contact with others. It happens.

People were washing dead bodies with their hands, and often sleeping with them as the ceremonial process dictated. Sure, sure, some had open cuts. Not all. But most agencies warn of contact to broken skin, as well as your membranes. Its not as if it needs to be downplayed the threat of getting ebola sweat or mucous into your eye/mouth subconsciously.

Ebola is spread directly, human-to-human, by secretions such as saliva, sweat, but also by blood and feces. It can be spread directly by a break in the skin or mucous membranes or indirectly after touching your nose, mouth or eyes after having contact with the virus.

Goodbye, tipping threads, threads about gun control and the end of Genderless Dystopia in the US. I'll miss it all.

This disease makes me dislike the people who never cover their mouths when they sneeze, even more so when you use public transport like myself, people just don't care, and then there are some who do "cover" their mouths but they only re-direct it elsewhere because they don't fully cover their mouths. I get so annoyed when i see people like that, i've often told them to cover their mouths properly when sneezing... i'm sure i didn't come off as a polite guy, but i don't care... be mindful of others.

seriously, countries (and maybe even neighboring countries) affected by this disease should have all transport in and out cut off. ebola is too dangerous to screw around with

In? No. I mean what about international help. But out, it should be extremely regulated, yes.

I assumed that shutting down airports would be a given. Do they not realize that this is no joke or have "it'll NEVER happen to me" syndrome?? Just wait till the poop hits the fan and people here will have the symptoms. THEN people will take notice. (I guess no one seems to care until these things hit a first world country?)

i'd say at this point the only thing that should be allowed in is help, and the things bringing that help in should be heavily screened before being let back out.

I don't mean to alarm you but you have dogs on your face

Why? If you sneeze into your hand then you spread it to everything you touch. If anything, sneeze and cough onto your upper arm/shoulder or something.

People are more afraid of being wrong and embarrassed than they are of being wrong and starting a pandemic.

What about the water vapour from just breathing normally, holy shit. Being near anyone infected is a huge risk without a bio suit. Death by diarrhoea has got to be one of the worst.

Diarrhoea isn't what kills you, generally. The ebola virus targets the cells of the blood specifically, so you end up with severe haemorrhaging, which you see with blood coming out of nearly every oriface, and then generally the organs fail due to all the damage to the cells of the blood (cause the virus destroys the cells during its replication process), which causes death

My microbiologist lecturer spent a bit going through it yesterday.

Holy shit. Time to stock up on the hand sanitizer, full body condoms and avoid crowded places. Taking the stairs at work starting tomorrow to avoid elevators full of potential carriers,.

Wish that were possible here. The building is brand new and they decided that having doors into the stairwells on the first floow was a bad idea so you can only exit via the stairs, not enter. You can go up and down from 2 to 14 but 1? Nope. Gotta get on that elevator.

Very possible it's airborne right now and officials are scared to inform the public.

They're just damning everyone if that were the case. The best defense against a potential pandemic is knowledge. Withholding vital information such as that is a great way to kill a fuck-ton of people.

Simple solution, sneeze into the inside elbow. No hands are involved that way.

on the bright side, ebola kills its victim too quickly for it to spread widely

This applies to central africa, where it kills entire villages without any outside contact.

An outbreak at a US airport or major metropolitan area? It'll spread like wildfire.
