Quiet during play, but in standby mode I can hear it while I try to fall asleep.
Wait, I thought the fan turns off completely during standby, so it should virtually produce no noise.

I thought my ps4 was very loud (about desktop level noise, and a lot more when pushing pixels), until I heard my buddy's ps4.
try to imagine the loudest 360 you ever saw on a 4 hour hardcore session. then triple that. and mix it with some hairdryer sound.
mine is still very loud compared to my xbone, i can live with that, but I have also learned that other people may be right to complain in a much higher tone, and not exaggerate.

Try turning off the usb charging function during standby. Worked for me. Of course it's a bit cumbersome since my controllers now aren't always charged.
my gaming pc is quieter under load than my ps4. but ye every so often it revs up like a jet engine when gaming like every 5 mins, but then it quiets down.

Louder than this? This is the best example video for "loud" that i could find, mainly no talking over the ps4's noise. Mine, playing the same game, was not as loud as that, but mine does get loud and i don't like the slight hum the fans make outside of the normal whooshiness.
Are some of you mistaking the vibration noise from PS4 during disc drive spinning up vs the actual fans? Sometimes the disc drive spinning can cause noise because of the pads under the PS4 aren't well placed.
It was mega loud for me until I adjusted the placement and the noise went away. I don't recall the fans ever getting loud enough during any games to be heard like a "jet engine". It only happened from the disc drive causing the vibrations originally.
Yea, for some reason my TLOU is making the disc drive really loud.
All other game discs are fine but as soon as I put TLOU in, it goes nuts with loud vibrations until it stops reading the disc. Very odd.
It happened with TLOU and Wolfenstein TNO with me. It appears the drive is spinning pretty hard during large installs from the disc. That's what I think is happening.
I do but mine is with nba 2k14Transistor makes mine way louder than any other game I have. Anyone experience similar?
It does it even when the game is installed though.
I just put the disc in today after installing it yesterday and its more louder when it reads the disc.
I'd get it swapped with ShopTo but I think as you say, its just the disc and the PS4 reading it as opposed to a problem with the console.
I've got until November to make my mind up.

Mine is loud too but I wonder if it has to do with physical discs vs digital. I buy just about everything physical. Tomb Raider is digital and I don't think I've heard it, but I have it heard it with physical copies of Infamous and the Last of Us. Do people who do mostly digital purchases have the same problem?

easier to hear it in this video. the noise and higher pitched noise is typical for turbine fan designs. theyre good for saving space but crap for noise. Microsoft did good on the cooling solution this time around, sony progressed backwards in that respect.
with a physical disc youll have some additional drive noise until the game is done installing but then there should be no difference.

It seems I'm one of those unlucky people with a loud PS4. On some posts around the net, there are people with inaudible PS4's and there are those with jet engines.
After 10 minutes of Don't Starve, my PS4 becomes loud enough for me to adjust the volume of my TV. It's not in a complete enclosure, it's in a shelf with hopefully sufficient space around, The air around is not hot so I could say the surrounding air flow is not shabby, just the air coming out of the vents is hottish.
Have I got a faulty PS4? Is there a secret menu I can check on the GPU temp or maybe control fan speed?

Nope but I also have yet to put a disk in it.
All digital!
This is actually my video. Since then I have had it replaced with a refurb (still noisy in the same places during games) and then a brand new PS4. The new one, while not as noisy as the refurb, is still louder than I'd like. TLoU for example really gets the fans going.
The main thing I've noticed though is that all the consoles crank the fan up at the same points during games, so I don't understand these people with inaudible consoles? Doesn't seem to make sense.
I heard a lot of people saying their PS4 was like a jet engine playing Last of Us but I haven't heard anything. Seems to stay whisper quiet most of the time. I do have it in a open room with no other console next to plus the temp never really gets above 73-75.
I'm all digital as well.
