My PS4 is noisy, yours?

I thought my ps4 was very loud (about desktop level noise, and a lot more when pushing pixels), until I heard my buddy's ps4.
try to imagine the loudest 360 you ever saw on a 4 hour hardcore session. then triple that. and mix it with some hairdryer sound.

mine is still very loud compared to my xbone, i can live with that, but I have also learned that other people may be right to complain in a much higher tone, and not exaggerate.

Yes, mine has become quite loud as well. Fortunately, the distance I play from and the volume of the game keep it from being noticeable while I'm playing a game for the most part. But it is surprisingly loud.

Louder than this? This is the best example video for "loud" that i could find, mainly no talking over the ps4's noise. Mine, playing the same game, was not as loud as that, but mine does get loud and i don't like the slight hum the fans make outside of the normal whooshiness.

I'm extremely insecure with how much f2p mobile games are encroaching on Nintendo
It's not really too noisy but it sure does warm my room up. Never liked that since 360/PS3 dropped but it is what it is.

My friend got a loud one, sent it back and the new one is quiet. Sounded like a leaf blower after a little while of gaming.

I would call Sony while its still under warranty.

I feel like mine is the opposite of most people who are reporting loud fan noise during gaming:

The fan on mine briefly makes a bit of noise when the console is initially booting up or a game disc has been inserted, and then goes really quiet when a game is being played.

I think that's how it's suppose to work (?)

Wait, I thought the fan turns off completely during standby, so it should virtually produce no noise.

Try turning off the usb charging function during standby. Worked for me. Of course it's a bit cumbersome since my controllers now aren't always charged.

Mine are definitely loud. In practically every game the fans kick up to an audible level. My gaming PC runs quieter than my PS4. I can't wait til I'm out of warranty so I can tear that thing apart though. If it's anything like my launch PS3, the thermal paste was so badly applied that it was begging to be replaced.

Yeah, mine is a bit noisy too. Coming from a very quiet slim (v1) ps3, that's one of the first things I noticed. I'd say it's as loud as my 360s, which is audible but a lot less than my old 360.

I'll try disabling USB during standby, as I intend to buy the official cradle charger anyway.

Mine is nearly silent, except for the ~30 seconds after booting (the disc being read?) and the ~30 seconds after going into standby (during which it make an awful whining noise).

Nice fix. This made mine completely silent, and USB charging hadn't been working anyway so yay...

Marvel

could never
Super quiet.

I did notice it gets nosier if I have it vertical though, that's weird. But it's horizontal 95% of the time.

Never noticed my PS4 get loud. Been playing TLoU and don't hear it at all. It is sitting on top of my entertainment center able to breath sitting flat.

Yep, I have a jet engine too. The fans are waaaayyy louder than the disk drive and run constantly loud after about 3 mins from boot up.

If it cooks itself, hopefully it does it before the 3 year extended warranty runs out.

Telling you guys to swap your PS4's while you can. Mine was loud as hell then it broke and I got a new one. Wayyyy quieter.

I wouldn't be surprised if the reason it broke had something to do with the loudness. Maybe it wasn't venting properly.

my gaming pc is quieter under load than my ps4. but ye every so often it revs up like a jet engine when gaming like every 5 mins, but then it quiets down.

My rig too is much quieter than the PS4 lol. The Xbox One is quieter too. It's really bad. Not as bad as engine jet 360 levels but it's not that far depending on the games :(

this is not loud. try to imagine what I wrote.
and his ps4 is brand new, since he went and bought it right after playing destiny alpha on mine.

Are some of you mistaking the vibration noise from PS4 during disc drive spinning up vs the actual fans? Sometimes the disc drive spinning can cause noise because of the pads under the PS4 aren't well placed.

It was mega loud for me until I adjusted the placement and the noise went away. I don't recall the fans ever getting loud enough during any games to be heard like a "jet engine". It only happened from the disc drive causing the vibrations originally.

Yea, for some reason my TLOU is making the disc drive really loud.
All other game discs are fine but as soon as I put TLOU in, it goes nuts with loud vibrations until it stops reading the disc. Very odd.

It happened with TLOU and Wolfenstein TNO with me. It appears the drive is spinning pretty hard during large installs from the disc. That's what I think is happening.

if your having issues, just send it back to Sony. My PS4 is louder than my Xbone but not as bad as some here have had.

It does it even when the game is installed though.
I just put the disc in today after installing it yesterday and its more louder when it reads the disc.

I'd get it swapped with ShopTo but I think as you say, its just the disc and the PS4 reading it as opposed to a problem with the console.

I've got until November to make my mind up.

Mine is loud too but I wonder if it has to do with physical discs vs digital. I buy just about everything physical. Tomb Raider is digital and I don't think I've heard it, but I have it heard it with physical copies of Infamous and the Last of Us. Do people who do mostly digital purchases have the same problem?

It didn't happen with Wolf after I had it installed. It also stopped after the initial loading from TLOU. I know TLOU always needs to reinstall stuff when you boot the game on PS3 so maybe it's doing something similar on PS4. I only played the prologue so I haven't checked. I'll check this weekend and report back in this thread.

easier to hear it in this video. the noise and higher pitched noise is typical for turbine fan designs. theyre good for saving space but crap for noise. Microsoft did good on the cooling solution this time around, sony progressed backwards in that respect.

with a physical disc youll have some additional drive noise until the game is done installing but then there should be no difference.

This is how my unit sounds when I play a decently demanding game (and it has sounded like this since new). I keep it horizontal and in an open space. Skip to about 35sec in to the video if my link does not work.

This also sound alot like mine. Disc noise can hardly be heard due to fan noise.

I definitely have a significant fan noise level with disc games after 10-15 minutes. Not obnoxious, but definitely higher than I would like.

Called up Somy and initiated replacement. Better to do it while under warranty than having to pay later.

My PS4 is inaudible from my sitting distance of ~6ft away, and I'm very sensitive to sound. Ambient temperature probably makes a big difference yeah? I keep my apartment quite cold year-round.

It's not very loud, it is about as loud as my old PS3 slim after a couple of hours of gameplay. Which isn't really an issue - but I really appreciate how very quiet the Xbox One is and would have liked a larger PS4 with larger fans spinning at a lower RPM.

I'll hopefully get a pretty quiet PS4 when I buy one. My PS3 becomes like a hand dryer, as soon as I start a game.

Mine's generally quiet (other than initial disc spinning) but TLOU's been the only game where I've noticeably heard the fans are on all the time.

A friend has it and I haven't noticed any noisy peaks during our gaming sessions. It seems that XOne is even more quiet, but PS4 is OK too.

Mine is very close to obnoxiously loud. It's out in the open and horizontal, so I doubt there's anything else that I can do. Might call up Sony, but I doubt they would replace it for that. I'm in Norway, and their support goes through a company called Nordisk Film, and every time I've contacted them for help they've been anything from not helpful to total dicks.

I only get jet engine sound when it turns on and off. Yesterday I played Wolfenstein like 7-8 hours straight and no noise. I hope I don´t have this when playing TLOUR.

It seems I'm one of those unlucky people with a loud PS4. On some posts around the net, there are people with inaudible PS4's and there are those with jet engines.

After 10 minutes of Don't Starve, my PS4 becomes loud enough for me to adjust the volume of my TV. It's not in a complete enclosure, it's in a shelf with hopefully sufficient space around, The air around is not hot so I could say the surrounding air flow is not shabby, just the air coming out of the vents is hottish.

Have I got a faulty PS4? Is there a secret menu I can check on the GPU temp or maybe control fan speed?

I have had the same issue with my launch PS4. I had just resigned myself to being "one of the unlucky ones" until last week when my PS4 actually failed. Phoned up Sony, did a restore, still no luck, so Amazon swapped it for a brand new one. It's now considerably quieter. It's not silent by any means, but it doesn't ever seem to go into "hairdryer mode" like the last one did.

This is actually my video. Since then I have had it replaced with a refurb (still noisy in the same places during games) and then a brand new PS4. The new one, while not as noisy as the refurb, is still louder than I'd like. TLoU for example really gets the fans going.

The main thing I've noticed though is that all the consoles crank the fan up at the same points during games, so I don't understand these people with inaudible consoles? Doesn't seem to make sense.

I heard a lot of people saying their PS4 was like a jet engine playing Last of Us but I haven't heard anything. Seems to stay whisper quiet most of the time. I do have it in a open room with no other console next to plus the temp never really gets above 73-75.

Nope but I also have yet to put a disk in it.

All digital!

I'm all digital as well.

Can the noise be reduced with software updates?

I think you would be an ideal candidate to post a vid. Slap TLoU in, get it to the title screen with the volume down and stick your phone/camera near the console and we'll compare. This is important because I'm yet to hear a whisper quiet console so I'm ready to be impressed.
