I am glad there is not 3rd party Exclusive rumours for gamescom. 3rd party Exclusive rumours are always weird. I remember when it was rumoured that destiny was going to be a timed exclusive for xbox. Crazy times.

The original contract between Activision and Bungie did have the first game as being a timed 360 exclusive.

What happend to this anyway?
Last time we heard from SOE they still saying 2014 release and most work is done they are tweaking the UI to be console/controller friendly. Honestly this game is one of the reason i bought PS4 am dying to hear anything about it.

TGS is irrelevant, Sony shouldn't be holding back any big guns for that, some Vita stuff at best.

Say huh?

The Japan market is insanely important for any successful console. 20m sales or so just waiting to happen over there if you put enough material on your console that appeals for them. And it is a snowball effect. Get the support of Japan, and get the support of all the Japan developers in the process. Then you get those unique import titles, the exclusives from the studios, the RPG's, etc. Work for localization teams over here in the US, yadda yadda.

Sony should put as much effort into getting the console base excited over there as anything else. They have the attention of the US/EU/UK and now need to really work over there hard in 2015. And then there is China, which lord .. is what 200 million potential customers or something?

Would be great.
Sony need to step their 3rd party exclusive game up anyway.
Microsoft has Ryse, Dead Rising, Titanfall, PvZ, Sunset Overdrive and Scalebound.
Sony only has Deep Down.
take out all those and did ms have for 1st party?

besides, sony has had content exclusives for 3rd parties and timed exclusives for indies. not to mention pvz is already out for ps4. ps4 also has had more retail releases.

Did PS3 even break 10million
What is with this 20 million figure

Japan 21 million (as of October 1, 2008)[1] March 4, 2000 ( PS2 )

PSP hit 19,000,000 in Japan.

original playstation hit 20,000,000, etc.

Think last gen was the first without a console hitting 20m in Japan, or very close to it.

Japan has been handheld dominant for quite a while, but thats changed - just look at PSV sales. Its mobile or 3DS now, and the 3DS will never compare to the DS or GBA.

The original playstation was way too long ago to simply compare the markets and be like, "look 20million potential customers!"

Peoples tastes, the culture, all these things change over such a long period of time. There is barely any demand for home consoles, and just bit for handhelds thanks to Monster Hunter and Pokemon.

True, but I do see there being a market for home consoles, much more so than current sales would indicate.

It's just that too much is still coming out for PS3. Deep Down could help but where is it? And bit of an aside but what is happening to Planetside 2 as well?

Consumers migrate toward whatever it is that has what they want on it. It is a double edged sword really. You have to have the product that attracts the consumers to build a userbase, but to build a userbase you have to haver the product that attracts the consumers.

Sony just has to build a library that is attractive for the consumer over there. When a console is the most popular it has the potential so tell 20m over there, history has shown that be it home console or handheld. Build it and they will come, a wise ghost once said.

Sony really HAS to somehow get Monster Hunter onto the PS4. It has to happen. Would be MASSIVE. They need Dragon Quest back on the console as well. They need the utmost support from the japanese dev. community on all fronts. I think this gen Sony has the highest hopes of getting the support they used to get on the PSX / PS2. The PS4 is easier to develop for, it is very popular and building a large userbase pretty quickly, etc. They will just have to plop down some dough to help with initial development costs and any losses during the initial building of the userbase over in that country. Even MH would likely lose money in Japan right now with only 600K people to sell to.

If by early 2016 there isn't a movement happening, it is all over. But 2014 is a wash, some stuff will come through in 2015, but 2016 we should start getting major titles, announcements of other titles, etc. coming down the pike that could start that hype train that doesnt end until Year 7 that has been traditionally seen. It is all about momentum. Hype builds momentum, solid titles solidify the momentum and a wide range of support guarantees the momentum to carry through an entire generation. Sony had 0 momentum with the PS3, and lose dev support with the horrible architecture of the PS3 and that killed momentum further. They began to build back momentum once 2009 hit, and that momentum began carrying them through to the end of the generation. Sony is lucky the last gen was so damn long, otherwise they would of been in 3rd place by a pretty wide margin if we had new consoles in say 2012 or something.

Why aren't there higher sales for PS3 then?
I think theres a lot of wishful thinking on NeoGAF and the Japanese market. Your statement would indicate that PS3 sales are the upperbound for PS4 sales given that there is less Japanese software on PS4 right now in comparison to PS3. In addition, an increasing number of Japanese developers are forgoing traditional console development for mobile or handheld development resulting in fewer console titles, and very few large "console moving" type titles. You could then conclude PS4 would never reach the sales levels of PS3. The solution it seems to be getting more developers making PS4 games, but how can you justify that as a developer when the market is so much large for mobile? Sony could potentially "lead the charge" but they'd never be able to produce that high of an output and the return on investment is questionable, probably would be hard to justify the financial risk given the development costs associated with video games and the allocation of so much capital to try and heal a market that just doesn't care anymore when there is still high potential for growth in other areas, like the US (compared to the PS3 levels). In addition I believe Sony will increase the focus on other developing nations such as China, India and Brazil in the future leaving less and less capital availalble for any real big initiatives in the Japanese market.

Didn't Verendus say monster hunter was coming back to playstation? Or am I imagining things...
You're imagining things, but...

So is that mysterious Japanese game confirmed or has anything that points to it being a JRPG? Gonna start hoping for another Wild Arms eventually, hopefully, maybe.

Neither of which are JRPGs, but I agree with the point that there's no reason why Sony can't reveal a big JRPG at Gamescom, especially if it's a well known franchise.
I don't see why that distinction matters. What was the last big JRPG announced at TGS anyway? God Eater 2?

Nowadays it's either in-house affairs (like P5 or Tales) or Famitsu.

What about:

Bloodborne?
The Order 1886?
Yakuza Kenshin?
Let it Die?
Rime?
Everybody's Going to the Rapture?
Oddworld: New N Tasty
Grim Fandango
Galak-Z
No Man's Sky
ABZU

There are more too! Those that have been release and those still coming.

Plus, that isn't even getting into the multitude of 1st party games upcoming,

So the 360 isn't successful ?

The distinction matters because Rain and Puppeteer are not Japanese-centric games and so even though they're small PSN titles, they're the type of games that could be revealed at a Gamescom. When it comes to JRPGs though, I don't see Sony making an announcement at Gamescom unless it's a big title. They're not going to spend part of their conference revealing the next Atelier or Nippon Ichi title, even if it's exclusive to PS platforms.

But FFXV and KH3 were given the center stage treatment at E3 last year.

If Sony's RPG is truly the Final Fantasy-esque AAA production it's rumored to be, then it's not at all comparable to Atelier or Nippon Ichi.

All we know about it is that Sony is giving a 30 minute presentation to the press for it. There aren't any other details. I would say that if it's being unveiled at gamescom then there's a good possibility that it's something that they feel is very appealing to the west. Similar to Bloodborne, GT, Puppeteer etc. They unveiled Gravity Rush 2 and Oreshika 2 in Japan.

Exactly, which is why I said there's no reason why Sony can't reveal a big JRPG at Gamescom. I'm just saying I don't see Sony spending time revealing a JRPG on the level of Rain or Puppeteer.

Oh, I misunderstood, because there's no indication that the RPG is not the level of Rain or Puppeteer.

Verendus could tell me I'd need to defecate soon after my morning coffee and I'd still be sceptical about it tbh.

Read some of the posts the guy has made on GAF before and I don't think a single one of his teases/hints ever came to anything.

If Sony actually has a more traditional JRPG in development, then there's no way they're going to unveil it at gamescom. That'll be TGS because they need to have a good showing there given the PS4's current situation in Japan.

Not a problem. I just thought it was strange to use Puppeteer and Rain in response to the other poster about JRPGs when neither was a JRPG. Going with KH3 and/or FFXV at E3 2013 would've been the better answer IMO.

That's because the stuff he's leaked here is years off from being announced. Dude is legit.

EGttR, Order and Bloodborne are all Sony owned IPs.
