New SILENT HILL by Hideo Kojima & Guillermo Del Toro starring Norman Reedus

If I know my Silent Hill like I think I do, then the end of the game it will be revealed that the Norman Reedus character you are playing is the boss the wife slept with that led her husband to kill his entire family.

So the horror is your fault and Silent Hill is making you live through your own hell for the guilt you feel.

The thought of next gen fog fills my heart with a certain joy. I still think about SH2 every single time it is foggy out, and it is my absolute favorite weather condition because of it.

I will never forget the day SH2 came out. When I answered the door for the UPS man that was delivering my copy if the game it was one of the foggiest days I had seen in my entire life. I got to play the game for about an hour and then I had to ride my bike to work through the dense fog. SH is a very special series for me, and this is beyond exciting both in what it is and how it was announced. I honestly was not expecting another Silent Hill, let alone a proper Japanese developed one.

Sometimes lack? ALWAYS lack imo! Wider Japanese horror is just unmatched as well. There is almost nothing scary that has come out of Western cinema for over a decade, and I watch a lot of films.

While arguing what's scary to whom is pointless there *have* been a number of great western horror films in the last decade, especially from Europe. Sure, Hollywood's output is mostly stale and recycled but it's not like asian cinema is somehow above that, considering they've released a shit-ton of Ringu clones all by themselves. With absolutely brilliant gems in between, of course (A Tale of Two Sisters etc.) but still.

I feel like calling it silent hills is a way for them to take a small departure from the tried and true classics of the first 3 and go a very different route in terms of horror. I'm not expecting a return to fashion at all and if anything this teaser just further proves that. I am expecting a great horror experience, I just hope they go back to the unexplored mythos of the town(s?) as well as strong enemy design which is what silent hill is most notorious for.

No cult crap please.

I really hope they move away from the theme of the town making you live through your horrible past.

But that's the basis of the SH lore. Even with the personalized story of James in SH2, it serves as a backdrop to support the "evil" within SH. The one thing I dislike about the post quadrilogy is that they focused too much on reiterating SH2's formula.

Just playing Devil's Advocate here, but why are Reedus and Del Toro even involved?

Isn't this the type of bloat that gets these AAA publishers in trouble? Other than marketing, I don't see what Reedus adds to the product. Historical precedent would lead me to believe that a professional voice actor would lend a better performance anyways.

This teaser looks heavily inspired by silent hill 4. A game which in my opinion was a bit ahead of it's time and under appreciated, particularly the first person apartment exploratory parts. I hope this game gets most of the key Japanese staff back.

Not crazy about the whole known actor being an actual character in the game thing or the Hollywood stuff in general, but if it makes for a better game so be it. But everyone will just see the guy as daryl/character from another iP. The Hollywood stuff does seem a bit....bloated, I think.

I wish I had a ps4 to play this as a diehard silent hill fan myself. I had to learn through streams and announcements. Glad akira is back doing the music and audio engineering, as he should be. Is this game multiplatform?

Kojima's just got a thing for Hollywood.

Kojima loves celebrities and movies so this game is probably his wet dream.

Knew some of GAF would poop all over this. This is honestly the gaming eviqualent of Beyonce releasing her new album in the middle of the night. Best part is, with all the talent involved (it ain't just Kojima and Del Toro), they've got 1-2 years to model this and perfect it. I don't mind armchair gamers giving their 2 cents, but jeez, let's at least wait for more info (most likely today) to come out.

I'm really hoping they can both bring back the old feeling of Silent Hill with its atmosphere and lore while making a solid story with a the right amount twists and turns to keep the players on their toes.

I'm looking at you Kojima.

Help with selling a game that hasn't been good since the early 2000s in the West. Reedus is hugely popular because of The Walking Dead (horror lol) and Del Toro is involved because no one wants SH to be as convoluted as MGS. Plus his names carries Hollywood clout adding to appeal to a wider audience.

At the end we will discover there was no magic to the craziness in Silent Hill, but Nanites that escape from an underground Soviet Era Lab still guarded today by Spetsnaz who are constructing a bipedal robot under the US's nose!

And only a clone of Norman Reedus (voiced by David Haytor) can stop it.

Agreed. Also, Del Toro certainly wasn't involved, because he's the best choice for art direction/story/whatever he's doing in a Silent Hill title, but because he can be used for marketing slogans. Seems like the wrong priorities from the get go. I suspect this might be as generic as ,,Kojima produced'' Castlevania, but who knows. Hopefully there's a trailer soon...

I'm not entirely convinced Kojima and del Toro have the chops to make what I'd consider to be a true, franchise faithful "Silent Hill". Not because I believe they're untalented, but because neither have really demonstrated the kind of visual and thematic style that defines the series. I fucking adore del Toro, but even his best work just isn't Silent Hill, and the same goes for Kojima. That being said, while I'm highly sceptical this will result in a Silent Hill game as I'd expect, I'm confident the two together can at the very least produce a unique, compelling, and unsettling horror experience. And that's ultimately what I'm looking forward to, Silent Hill branding or not.

This is more about getting a competent and talented art director with enough creative power and vision to implement something that is visually consistent with the theme(s) of the actual game, as well as in line with the general principles of the overarching series, than it is about Kojima and Del Toro having the skills and talent to execute visual and thematic style successfully.

Just like Kiefer Sutherland's expensive voice acting in MGS5 resulting in incredibly less dialogue and lines in the script, so will Reedus have very sparse lines in this Silent Hill game.

In terms of Kojima's writing ability and Silent Hill's narrative principle of subtlety and obfuscation, having as few script lines as possible is a good thing.

At the end we will discover there was no magic to the craziness in Silent Hill, but Nanites that escape from an underground Soviet Era Lab still guarded today by Spetsnaz who are constructing a bipedal robot under the US's nose!

Don't forget crotch grabs and fanservice.

I saw someone suggest that the reveal was somehow triggered by streaming on Twitch and would not show up if you just played by yourself. Is that true?

Personally, I don't think much of Kojima or Del Toro, and I feel like on some level this is Del Toro trying to rescue some of his ideas of his cancelled project while Kojima tries to borrow some Hollywood mindshare/legitimacy.

My first reaction was pretty much simply "wtf, no please," but this has been a clever marketing device as it has made me hopeful about the possibilities of the engine. I also think the fact that this is so hard to figure out works to the advantage of it as marketing, because it gets people talking about it.

I'm glad this isn't where they are necessarily taking the final product, but they managed to flip a "fuck no" into wanting to know where they take this, so this was a success in my book.

I just thought, the chances of Steam versions of previous Silent Hill games have gone up a bit.

Kojima said the script was complete way before Kiefer was cast.

Plenty of people streaming it didn't get to the "reveal", so I don't know about that.

In the ending
you get a phone call where a voice tells you that you are "the chosen one" which leads me to think that not everyone can trigger the ending reveal..

In all honesty, there's already enough cult silliness ruining the atmosphere of later SHs to enable any batshit nonsense Kojima could want
