Polytron Hacked?

Wow this guy gets so much hate for some reason. Seems like he is the indie whipping boy because he created an amazing game, and then has a few bad twitter comments which suddenly invalidates all his work and effort.

I often wonder what is the point of even trying to make games anymore, you rely on being out there and interacting with your community and the minute someone objects to your opinion you get huge waves of hate.

I guess that what it must be like being a celebrity, but no one deserves there entire life's work destroyed like this.

If he had not in the past , i imagine this will definitely stop him from making another fez (which is such a shame).

Hope it works out ok for Phil and know that 99 percent of gamers don't think like this particular asshole.

People lacking empathy for others, even if they don't know them, aren't people I'd like to know.

This isnt a great way to look at things, I definately wouldn't love reading this if I did know them personally. Be a little human about it, it sucks for this to happen and he didnt deserve it, you know that, or atleast should.

You guys aren't following the conservation. I was talking to another poster, whom mentioned he couldn't feel empathy for Phil because he's was an arrogant a hole, using their words.

I retorted mentioning, that how can you feel about someone like without knowing them. I never understood that. I personally feel bad for Phil in this situation.

It's not really supposed to be anything.
Well I mean without going off topic, I consider it a form of entertainment and at its best or worst I believe it could be considered a hobby. I just think that this is the wrong reaction and it's definitely the wrong way to handle any issues they may have with Phil Fish or at large.

is it bad that i have no empathy for Phil fish in this matter

I don't know if anyone deserves this. I may have a real hard time feeling particularly sorry for this guy after he bullied a fellow dev into silence over possible sexual harassment, but if your goal is to fight back against someone's odious behavior you usually won't accomplish that by performing criminal acts against them, in fact it will probably backfire AND you'll end up in legal trouble.

Why not? It's a stupid reaction blaming all gamers when it's only a few that pull this kind of crap

When your ideals fail to catch up and change your reality, you become embittered with the world as a whole. Stronger the beliefs, the stronger the resentment.

Anyway, false flags are very likely imaginary, but then so is the idea that these are 4chan raids. Both sides are looking for a formidable opponent to explain their setbacks.

After this week, I really can't blame them.

Same here. I don't think it's right to blame gamers for this, but c'mon. We've all seen the threads about social issues in games, and we all know the trajectory they take towards the eventual lock. This isn't new stuff. This is the shittiest action on top of a week filled with people everywhere spewing shit, on top of all the threads that become nothing but toxic.

I'm so glad I quit 4chan years ago, and I'm pretty much done with reddit too. If it weren't for GAF i'd be done with gaming communities for good.

Bunch of disgusting manchildren.

I've heard about the .zip file...apparently, it's all legitimate.

Tax returns, financial statements, invoices, contracts, expense documents, government documents, personal information, bank accounts, sales data, Sony / Microsoft / Steam QA + certification files / contracts...

OH MY GOD.

Someone needs to contact the authorities immediately.

OMFG a dude on twitter is posting screen caps of the files.

It's legit, so so so legit.

He's showing revenue shares from Microsoft with identification numbers, payment history, royalty information.

Bank statements, tax records with social security numbers. (or whatever the canadian equivalent is)

There's even invoices from Newegg for SSD's....

So all those documents/information, were present on what location?
.Polytroncorporation's Website?
.Phil's personal emails?

Either case, people should be wary of their stuff on the internet (including keeping stuff in personal emails or personal domains).

While these criminals might only be few in number, we do need to do our part to quell this rising movement against those that would dare to bring up uncomfortable issues in gaming. Anyone who's looked into the replies of any twitter message by Zoe knows that they are not that small in number, and it's our responsibility to counterbalance against the puerile hatred.

And for anyone still using the term "SJW" unironically, cut it out. Like, right now. Seriously.

Nah let them continue using that term. At least that way you can easily and quickly weed out the idiots.

I'm kind of surprised, really, as I find it ironic. I always thought that the people who usually get riled up at the existence of these so-called "SJWs" would be for free speech and against the censorship of dissenting opinions.

Oh please.

How many people on Reddit, NeoGaf, IGN, and 4chan make up the current, and relevant, gaming population? When you say gamers, what you're also saying is consumers. Casting venom at people willy nilly will solve absolutely nothing.

Yeah, talk about another thing going on that is pretty much unjustifiable. It doesn't matter how many people are evil as fuck, if you have open contempt for your whole audience because of it, you don't deserve your job. I feel the same way about Phil Fish, someone who fucking hates their fans as much as he does doesn't deserve a paycheck. However he definitely does not deserve a dox including fucking bank info.

phil is abrasive on twitter,
but always comes across really cool in person/live streams.

And being a jerk on social media is not a reason to have someone attempt to actively ruin your life

This sucks for Phil. To think that it wasn't one of his unjustifiable outbursts but actually one of his most just that did it. I don't blame him for cancelling Fez II at all.

I'm really tempted to download it just to analyze the sales numbers. Would that be wrong, in a purely academic sense?

Eh. There are subreddits that are great, the Souls community on Reddit is great, so many hilarious videos posted daily. Same with 4chan, /v/ can be a pretty cool place. There's no need to judge entire communities based on the actions of individuals who may or may not be a part of them.

It would be like saying GAF is shit because we've had some bad eggs in the basket. Something you DO see in communities as well, like some extended internet based group think.

I don't know if it was mentioned, but the /V/ thing is a reference to the Quinnspiracy where she (apparently) faked that she hacked & doxxed by "/V/ " (when the correct form would be /v/)

Never could I have imagine gaming would get to this point when I was a kid. Corrupted games journalist, hacking, sex scandals, etc... I really can't see Phil Fish wanting anything to do with the industry after this. Sure he's a dick, but this is fucked beyond belief.

I know for damn sure people will disagree with me. But why would /v/ come out and say this was them? they dont do that. Even on /v/ people are saying its dumb and an obvious attempt to get some ammo against them in the whole situation.

inb4hurdurconspiracytheorist

yeah why would someone from a group that constantly cries that every hack against a person they happen to be hating on is a false flag attack designed to frame them, put a giant "hello i am impersonating someone from from /v/ this is a false flag" sign on their work

Someone had to have gotten into his password manager. Only scenario I can think of where they get pretty much everything.

I hope they get the FBI on the case and whoever did this is caught. Won't seem like such a lark while serving a lengthy term in federal prison.

Is it acceptable? No of course not. Is it reality? Yes, yes it is.

He isn't condoning the behavior, it's just an event that can possibly happen when you end up making yourself a big target for those types of people.

Well, his post seems to imply that something like this should have been expected given his reputation, but seriously, who expects something like this?

The bolded goes without saying. Such things are possible, yes, but this goes way too far. I certainly wouldn't see this coming. Maybe hacking a twitter account or a DDoS attack or something, but not this.

I'd be willing to guess the overlap between these communities is a good amount, despite what they like to say otherwise. Secondly, there is really nothing indicating /v/ actually did it, if the page said "I am Evilore, this is war" would you believe it?

Really feel bad for Phil, hope everything works out as best it can.

This is someone who is making it look like a fake doxxing. And people will continue to claim up and down that it is fake. But no one in their right mind would purposefully leak all that personal info about themselves just to win some internet argument.

It looks they got a lot of their info. Why only hack the Polytron twitter? Why not their personal accounts as well? Something seems fishy.

I honestly do not believe this was even /v/. They dont come out and post in clear view "HEY GUYS /V/ DID THIS!!" that is just dumb. There are some cool subgroups on 4chan also. I always seem to be in the doctor who thread on /tv/

I'm not sure if they are going for the censorship angle as much as they are going for the cold-hearted revenge angle. Not really sure what they are using to justify this revenge, but that seems to be the idea.

Well I mean without going off topic, I consider it a form of entertainment and at its best or worst I believe it could be considered a hobby. I just think that this is the wrong reaction and it's definitely the wrong way to handle any issues they may have with Phil Fish or at large.

It could be considered a hobby, but I think labeling it that intentionally is very misleading. Saying something like "wow my hobby is fucked up" versus "wow this industry is fucked up" mean two completely different things. I might actually make a thread about this just to see what word people prefer as to avoid derailing this one.

If I had to guess, they probably got his onepassword master key.

I reckon they accessed his primary email, either by guessing the password, socially engineering support staff to get the password reset on his primary email, or something along those lines. Another method (if the primary email is a domain account, not a free one like Gmail) is getting access to the domain control panel and redirecting the email to another account you control.

Once you have access to someone's "primary" email account, you start going to websites like 1Password, KeePass, LastPass, Amazon, etc and requesting password resets, and suddenly you have access to the lot.

This is why you need a separate "password reset" email account you only use for password resets, and you never, ever, ever record the details anywhere, not even in a password manager.
Which is why MFA exists and to have it on your primary email account is absolutely vital, and if password management services have MFA, people should use it. It's not necessarily complete safety, but the deterrence factor is huge.

Being a jerk doesn't warrant having every ounce of your personal information put for the world to see. Ughhh... Wonder how Phil is gonna take this. And oh lord when the gaming media wakes up. We're in for a helluva Friday y'all. I hope he can re-stabilize. And I hope he has some cash money to get him through for a while.

This is why I dislike Anon. No accountability and always hiding behind the name, even if they may or may not be part of Anon.

To me, anyone that does stupid shit like this in the name of Anon, is Anon to me. If "Anonymous" would like to get rid of this issue, perhaps they should stop being the problem and come forward with who they are. Then you can claim someone isn't with you.

Easily explainable. They have access to business info, probably a 1password account that multiple people have access to in order to run Polytron.

Journalists are part of that culture too. There are good and bad people apart of any movement or culture.

Absolutely. I think most of the people in this thread would put themselves on the good side, myself included. Anyone out there saying right now "ugh gamers are the worst" doesn't mean "literally all people who play games are the worst". It's just shorthand, and anyone who is going to whine about being lumped in with bad people or being stereotyped is just being pedantic.

There is no organizational structure on 4chan outside moderators and such. Anonymous isn't a name, it is a status. There have been entities called "Anonymous", multiple ones in fact, but they are not necessarily 4chan posters or any more representative than the guy throwing out silly memes or wanting to talk about Fallout.

If it is a fake dox it wouldn't have to be the victim doing it. It could in theory be a game between hackers representing various organizations. I don't have much trouble picturing a bored hacker with a botnet taking down a website, posting a bunch of fake information, and then pretending to be /v/ just to spite /v/, or some crazy inception shit like /v/ pretending to be /v/ to make it look like it isn't /v/ after all.
