Mahouka 21

Annoyed with how the Leo x Erika training was handled, but the dat ass scene kinda made up for it.

Thoroughly pleased with how they handled the Miki x Mizuki moment.

Especially with how big (Or to be more accurate slightly bigger) Madhouse made her funbags.

Isn't this approaching the end of the series, what's it doing with a fanservice episode this late? Normally there would be some kind of climax about now.

Et tu Jexhius-senpai?

Et tu?

More fool you all for being manipulated by such a simple writing strategy. Slaine, like every character in Aldnoah.Zero, is a poorly written cut-out of a human being. The only difference with Slaine is that he's kind of supposed to be a decent guy that the audience are supposed to emphasise with because he has to go through some troubles. That's fine, by itself, but when it becomes blatantly clear that Slaine's suffers again and again not for plot or thematic reasons but simply to make the audience upset, then I say that I won't be fooled by such shallow manipulations.

SAO II Episode 8

A super powerful sniper gun with a silencer. Not OP at all. Nope.

First 70% was totally boring, at least it got somewhat interesting near the end.

sniper rifles are too large and unweildy. Watch how Chaika has to set up her magic gun in the midst of chaos.

Sure, when Monogatari is good it's worth discussing! Sadly SHAFT haven't put any effort in to the direction department since Bakemonogatari.

It's not like I'm going to go out and spend money on the series or I'm enjoying the show, they're just doing enough for me to not drop it just yet. If we start going into what directors and writers do to manipulate the audience then many shows would fall victim.

A good writer obviously wants to manipulate their readers/viewers into having some sort of emotional outcome. The big thing though is how heavy handed or subtle they can be while doing so. Neither is necessarily good or bad but it falls under personal preference to an extent. It all boils down to execution.

I think
showing Hime-sama and Inaho talking about birds and having Hime-sama all cheerful and then immediately cutting to Slaine being tortured is probably a bit heavy handed

Should start in the next episode or the one after.

You should be more concerned with your own ship than some other ones.

There's nothing wrong with engendering to produce an emotion in the audience of your work, after all, that's how it's supposed to work. We're supposed to feel emotionally moved by the story. There's just a difference between being really heavy handed and being subtle.

Subtletly is the outlier though. I don't care but the amount of shows that use the easy technique of getting the audience sad by having a really emotional song in the background is amazing.

Bake was a very strong start but S2 is much better than Nise or maybe that is just because of more Senjougahara.

I stopped with S2 at some point in the Hachikuji story but if the season overall features a lot of Senjougahara I guess that'll make it at least worth watching it through.

Per the usual, we're foolish for not listening to wonzo about this short stuff as it airs. In fact, the short format might be the only criticism I'd offer about this as I'd imagine it adversely affected perception of what the show was capable of as well as any desire to check it out as it went on. If anything, a longer format encapsulating everything would have probably resulted in higher visibility for folks here.

That said, even knowing the central premise and reveal of the show, so much still caught me off guard. I would have never really thought a short form anime would successfully manage to maintain the dark and dramatic tone present. Sure, there's some comedic elements but, by and large, it's a drama throughout with the occasional foray into something slightly adventurous. I'd have not really considered this would work all that well but this show demonstrated it can with the right material and in the right hands..

Wow holy shit at that asspull.
That power just comes out of nowhere
. I'm really mixed on this episode as I feel the Salty Dog stuff should have been long resolved and this whole arc just is stupid. The whole Salty Dog stuff is mindblowingly stupid.

I did like how the end scenes in the episode were handled but again I feel so much of this arc should have come sooner. The major problem with this show is the pacing. It just feels like everything is dragging its heels.

Happiness Charge Precure! 29

Cure of the Week is Yayoi, who, I should remind you, is the best. Aspiring manga artist, tokusatsu fangirl and unspeakably cute. That's enough about her, though.

Blue and Mirage's backstory was finally clarified.
Everyone probably guessed it by now, but Mirage was the miko in that one episode, and because Blue thought he couldn't return her love, that broke her heart and drove her to find a god that would encourage her revenge fantasies, leading to where we are now with the world being in danger.
For all its European trappings, the dance Hime was doing there was one of the more traditionally Japanese things I've seen from this franchise. It feels like the story's really picking up.

Next time:
Evil Lovely Doppelganger. I love an evil twin story.

Asspulls the episode. And the ending was groan-worthy.

Glad to see the scub cannon back in action.

And fuck Salty Dog too. Like seriously. It's just ruining the show week after week and actually feels like it's a tacked on conflict, especially given the poor resolution this episode.

Ojamajo Doremi Na-i-sho 7-11
Continues to be excellent. 7&8 were like above average 'regular' Doremi episodes, and then the past three were stellar. Especially 9, which probably has to be given the award for most sakuga episode in the entire franchise bar the movies.

Na-i-sho really feels like delivery time though, with all these potential top5-tier episodes packed so tightly. 2 more!

Is this the same mangaka as Hi Score Girl?

Has Boku no Pico guy done anything besides Boku No Pico?

If not, who in their right minds thought "hey let's get Urobuchi to write some episodes, then push him aside to let the guy who made Boku No Pico take a crack at it!"? Especially with a new studio filled with talent where their first work is key.
