Lightning Angel ain't shit

Mantis-Reiter.png

Abilities are Flying, Vigilance, Haste. Creature type is Human Monk.

Lightning Angel is better than this card. The one mana discount isn't worth the loss in toughness :/

Not that I've played Magic at all recently (and so would have the first-hand experience with which to compare), but would there be any explanation for why the cards in this set seem so weak so far? If (as people say) Theros wasn't a particularly powerful set either, is it just that WOTC has misjudged the mark again?

Trying to avoid power creep.

At least if Standard is boring and low-powered (not a sure thing at all with so many cards left to spoil) this set has conveniently made Modern a reasonable amount cheaper.

At least the Fetchlands save it from being the next Kamigawa. There's plenty to be previewed so hopefully they're saving the best for last.
That logic has never worked out for me in the past. I was thinking about grabbing a few boxes of this but... I dunno now.

Champions of Kamigawa is one of the best limited sets they ever made, right up with RoE and Innestrad. This doesn't look close to the goodness that was CHK limited

and this

Are not on equal footing

I'm now confident in saying that Tusker used to be something very different, and had to be killed at the last possible second, and considering last second changes tend to lead to the most broken cards, they made it as safe as humanly possible (to the point where in NWO it should be an uncommon, if not common)

It could even have been something as simple as having built in Lure or text like "target creature blocks it alone this turn, if able", which would have made it pretty good. Or it could've started out as a 6/6. And then it just got nerfed into oblivion for some reason.

I'm picturing something like "we have to have this set final in the morning, we need a new card for this slot before we leave work today, and it's already 3PM".

No IDEA why they are making it a precon deck promo card though.

Ouh I was talking mostly about value and constructed. Kamigawa's limited was amazing.

Sultai Ascension is BGU, during your upkeep look at the top two, you can put either in your GY and put the remainder back on top in any order.

Why is it we seem to be getting more enchantments in the set *after* the enchantment block? I know Rosewater was saying they pushed some of the interesting enchantment stuff further back from Theros but did they push it back into the next set or something?

I assume you mean global enchantments. Theros had tons of auras and enchantment creatures. They purposely held back on global enchantments during Theros block.

Angry Grimace

Two cannibals are eating a clown. One turns to the other and says "does something taste funny to you?"
This just seems like a very low powered set. Like, less powerful than Theros.

I don't get why people on the internet are acting like Empty the Pits is some kind of cool win-con. You basically are never able to cast that card due to the stupid mana requirements, you have to be running a delve deck for it to be good enough to win you the game and you can't cast it more than once thanks to the way Delve works, e.g. your entire deck folds to dissolve.

Urborg makes it castable. Also it is fun to believe.

The other tri-lands, BTW, with full art.

Bivouac?
noun: bivouac; plural noun: bivouacs
1. a temporary camp without tents or cover, used especially by soldiers or mountaineers.

Anyway, Mantis Rider is better than Lightning Angel because it's a guy riding a mantis. Icy Blast seems useful, but really boring as a rare. Savage Knuckleblade is pretty neat. You can cast it for 3 early and attack with it, then return it to your hand if there is a threat, then cast it again hasted. Empty the Pits is a bit boring, but if there really are good ways to fill up your graveyard, it could be effective. Hardened Scales is neat. Sultai Ascendency is really boring, but is also probably more useful than it first seems.

I actually really like this card. I don't think it'd have a place in my cube, but I love mirri's guile and this is kinda a more utility version. Obviously way more mama, but its a cool effect.

What sort of multicolor numbers does the rest of cube GAF have going for their cubes? I have a fair sure of two color spells, but I am not sure I want to introduce any tricolor spells into mine...

Depends on the theme of the cube. In something like a multiplayer/commander cube, 3-color spells are fine since games are likely to go long anyway and there should be plenty of fixing. Otherwise, I personally try to avoid 3-color cards if I can. If I were to add gold cards with more than 2 colors, it'd likely try to keep it to 1 or 2 cards per shard/wedge.

In a normal cube (i.e. not multicolor themed or focused) no more than about 10% (give or take a bit) of all the cards should be multicolor
