DKC1 screwed over on "IGN Plays"

The gaming press knows a lot less about games or even how to play them than you might think.

It's a little jarring when you first notice it.

DKC1 is hardly the pinnacle of platforming but unless a lot of those guys at IGN in the mid 2000's have left, it's ironic for a game they've called overrated pretty regularly during that lull period the franchise went through they don't seem to have much clue how to play it.

If it's not the same guys then it could just be they've simply never played it. Isn't their current Let's Play lineup just meant to be 125 different Nintendo games to cover their history? Seems like they'd eventually hit a game nobody in that group cares about or has played, and I guess DKC was that game in this instance.

Watching Jontron play DKC and DKC2 on Game Grumps was far more painful, and that was somebody who was a self-professed die hard fan of the series.

I love DKC series. The music, atmosphere, and graphics are all super advanced for the time it released. I have a VHS video of DKC1. Not sure how i got it, but i remember you had to mail away for it. It shows the making of, some secrets, and it was awesome. Still have that VHS, just no VHS player.
Edit: Found it, thank god for the internet!

I feel you OP. DKC was the first game I ever owned. Hearing about these IGN guys flub at honouring a important part of my childhood sounds terrible.

Talk about an overreaction...

did you watch the video?

If you're going to record playing something as some kind of historical tribute, do two minutes of research. Look at a controls screen, something.

The entire video can literally be summed up as "I don't know, whatever."

Stuff like one guy asking the other guy what makes DKC different from a Mario game, and the other answering with "the difference is, it's not Mario."

I don't even have fond memories of this game (I've never played more than a few levels of it), but the video is basically worthless.

This isnt an overreaction, and good ign was found out on this. How you gonna do a lets play remembering games and you pick a game you dont know shit about? Ign a bunch of poser ass folks and just there tryna act like they know stuff. They aint no better than gamestop they dont know shit unless its on their freshly printed script.

The people saying "who cares if they don't know about this game" are not understanding the argument. Like others have said a quick google before would tell you the controls and plot and when it was made. Making a tribute video with two people who have barely, if ever, played it is pretty ridiculous. It's their job to be up on this just like how sports journalists not around in the 80s or earlier have to research facts and statistics from bygone eras.

I agree with the OP. They are supposedly paying homage to Nintendo and these classics, that they themselves picked. As journalists they should have interesting and relevant information to share while showing the game. Yeah, so not everyone knows everything off the top of their head, ok, but that's why you do freaking research before acting like an ass in public.

It's like some movie reviewer decides to say, celebrate Alien 35th anniversary and jsut talks about how he doesn't care about the movie at all and it looks dated or some shit. Acting like an ignorant teenager is not the way to promote your website.

That said, I guess no one should waste time watching IGN vidoes, even though I saw a pretty good one about the original Castlevania once.

It's the factual facts they kept getting wrong that irked me the most not so much that they weren't passionate enough. Stuff as simple as getting the launch year wrong and knowing you can't fling Diddy (they also got his name wrong once) is something would've taken them 60 seconds on google.

The fact that whoever was playing it was allergic to the Y button (run/roll/grab) was icing on the s*** cake.

Probably to used to modern games and what not and can't deal with challenge or a game where you figure out how to play instead of having a forced tutorial.

Reminds of that sonic was never any good vid where the guy didn't even know to spin dash.

Not worth getting worked up about it though.

Wow, that was really bad.

"So what's different from this game then say a Mario game?"

"You're Donkey number one"

Something tells me these guys are the donkey.

If the old DKC games are anything like Returns, then I think I'll pass.
Well obviously Returns has a lot of DKC in it but I'd take DKC1 or 2 any day of the week over Returns. They have better music, better level design, and aren't cheap as all hell like Returns was. Those multiple mine cart levels and that cave one with the rocket barrel avoiding bats, ceilings, rocks and a giant bat was the absolute bane of my existence.

I haven't played Tropical Freeze but out of all the others, including DK64, I'd say DKC2 is by far the best Donkey Kong game ever made and one of the best platformers ever made. Right up there with Super Mario 3 and Yoshi's Island.

You really should play Tropical Freeze. It's as good as DKC2 in my opinion, and one of the best platformers ever made.

The game is overrated but it's history is a big deal. I can't believe how much they got wrong.

oh, agreed - however anyone feels about DKC, it was a huge deal historically. I guess i'm just not really minding this so much since my bar for IGN is fairly low anyway.

I'd say even better than DKC2, and I place DKC2 on a pretty high pedestal.

Maybe slightly worse music, though bringing Wise back was hugely appreciated. <3

OP makes a good point. And many of you will see that after watching the vid (and checking out other IGN Plays vids for context). This DKC IGN Plays vid is pretty poor.

I don't know why some of you are being so mean and mocking the OP. Come on, guys.

2) says he was two when DKC1 launched (he wasn't two. He was 4. How do I know this?)
Damn, I feel SO old. When I was 2, Nintendo was releasing TV-Game

I find it a bit strange to have people who were two young at this time to play those games sharing memories of them...

Making lets-plays to cash in is becoming an increasingly popular trend.

I thought that was the whole point of lets plays these days.

Well It's possible to play games later than they came out. I was born at the very end of the 80s but my first console was still the NES since my family wouldn't buy the latest and greatest (the SNES), but instead buy the last generation console that was being sold out for cheap. So even though I wasn't even born when SMB came out, it is one of my first gaming memories.

tl,dr: IGN sucks?

lol, thanks for the breaking news, chief ;)

Yeah, OP does make a fair point, and I admit my post was fairly crap. I just think IGN gets a rough go around here. It's gigantic and produces a good deal of fluff, but there are some good people there. I'm a big fan of Colin Moriarty, Greg Miller and the podcast people. There are some annoying reporters there, but for a gigantic media megalith it's not so bad. It's not really aimed at the typical GAF member anyway, imo.

You seem to be...overreacting. It's just people who probably haven't played the game in twenty years. I wouldn't have remembered what features were introduced in what game or every bit of info about it either.

This. I mean... Really? A thread for this?

I saw Eriq Martin at a grocery store in Phoenix yesterday. I told him how cool it was to meet him in person and congratulated him on IGN Plays, but I didn't want to be a douche and bother him and ask him for photos or anything.
He said, "Oh, like you're doing now"
I was taken aback, and all I could say was "Huh?" but he kept cutting me off and going "Huh? huh? huh?" and closing his hand shut in front of my face. I walked away and continued with my shopping, and I heard him chuckle as I walked off. When I came to pay for my stuff up front I saw him trying to walk out the doors with like fifteen snickers in his hands without paying.
The girl at the counter was very nice about it and professional, and was like "Sir, you need to pay for those first." At first he kept pretending to be busy and not hear her, but eventually turned back around and brought them to the counter.
When she took one of the snickers and started scanning it multiple times, he stopped her and told her to scan them each individually "to prevent any RFID 'interference'," and then turned around and winked at me. After she scanned each candy bar and put them in a bag and started to say the price, he kept interrupting her by yawning really loudly.

Wow, what a twat. Seriously, this made my blood boil just reading it.

I appreciate it. That's exactly what I was trying to convey.

I'll admit I haven't seen every IGN Plays they have released but none seems to have been as poorly managed and treated as the DKC1.

They already released DKC2 IGN Plays and still had one of the two ignorants from DKC1 but at least they had a new one who was gushing all over DKC2 while the first one (who I assume was the one playing and doing it poorly and still inexplicably allergic to the Y button) just kept saying stuff like "wow I learn something new every day" or "how do you know these things??" when the gusher said the name of que water level song from DKC1 was Aquatic Ambience. It's not like they're not professionals who get paid to know about games right?

A far cry from what I expected as bare minimum but a definitive step up from the atrocious DKC1 IGN Plays.

Opinions? They don't have to like your favorite game. They can discuss whatever they want however they want on their show whether you like it or not. Instead of complaining why not just stop watching and giving them attention?

While it is annoying, I have to agree with this post to some degree. Although, I think they could have done some basic research just to get their facts correct at least.
I remember during E3, they did a really lazy rewind video of the newly released Final Fantasy XV trailer. It was so, so bad-- they even said in the video that they were tired, but it's like, if you are going to be that lazy about it, might as well not do it. Perhaps this might apply to this Let's Play video? I suppose if they aren't even going to put minimal effort to get things right they shouldn't do it.

Is this real? Because wow, what a fucking douche.

Yeah I can see the problem here. If it was a regular let's play it'd be somewhat excusable, but for something that's meant to be a specific celebration of Nintendo classics? Yeah it's pretty disappointing that they can't even get the correct release date

1) one editor states he's "not into Mario games"

I don't really get what's wrong with this, I'm also a fan of DKC while not being into Mario games too :p

I don't really get what's wrong with this, I'm also a fan of DKC while not being into Mario games too :p
That's me not explaining myself clearly. What I meant to say is that after the guy accepts he has never played a DKC before he asks "what's the difference between this and a Mario game?" And the other guy responds "you're donkey as number 1" and at some point the first guy just says he wasn't a Mario fan either and later states how during the time Nintendo was releasing this platformers he was too busy playing Myst and Diablo to care.

Tell me those aren't just the perfect duo to tackle such an homage to honor DKC?
