Dolphin - Emulating Wii and Gamecube Games

Hey, new to the whole dolphin thing. I tried ripping my copy of Xenolade but I ended up with two files. Tried combining them using altap salamander but didn't get a useful file.

Edit: got it to work now

What sound settings are people using? I've been having a couple of issues with Xenoblade but I never noticed them before. The only difference is that I'm playing it now after formatting my PC. Maybe my drivers are messed up ¯\(°_o)/¯

What are your settings and specs?

4670k @ 4ghz and a 7970.

Too lazy to take a screenshot of all my settings, but I've tried every combination imaginable and still end up dipping to 40fps and lower on certain stages. No other game seems to have performance problems this severe.

Let me guess, your sound is stuttering but the game is running smooth? Cause that's the issue I got. I used to play the game no problem but now the sound stutters and if I set the fps to audio in the settings then the gameplay stutters cause then it goes into 25fps. Super annoying

What build are you using? You should have zero issues emulating the game aside from the shader caching frame drops.

Looks like you're using an ancient build. The option to limit the FPS to Audio was removed a long time ago for several reasons. Get the latest build and try again.

If you're still having issues you're probably not getting a perfect 30/25FPS and you'll hear stuttering.

You should not be having issues. I mentioned a few posts back I have Brawl running full speed on a stock A10-5800K, and your machine is far more powerful. Are you on the latest build? Dial back internal resolution if you've set it very high. Turn down AA if you are super sampling. Make sure you are using HLE for audio.

Are your drops replicable? I get stuttering when loading new stages or objects for the first time.

If all else fails, skip EFB access and enable OpenMP texture decoder.

EDIT: NVM I got it fixed thanks to another gaffer :)

I've never really taken note of Open MP Texture Decoder before (which is why I didn't test it when I said I tested everything lol), but I turned that on and everything seems to be running perfectly. Thanks!

Assuming your PC has PCIE slots (most pcs from the past 7 years do) it should be fine.

I just got the GTX750. Now, how do I know if I don't need anything else? I don't have much money left incase I need anything.

Will my PSU be enough for the GTX? I mean, I havr never upgraded or installed anything for a computer before. I'm hoping I won't need anything else, otherwise I will need to return it.

Anyone got Dolphin to work with Oculus DK2?

You need to use a custom build. Dolphin doesn't support the Oculus Rift natively.

Well the requirements for the card say that it requires a 300 W PSU so you should hopefully be just barely okay.

I got it working. In the near future I'll buy a better PSU for my computer.

Brawl works 100% at max settings for me. Sonic Colors does not, however. Dunno if I'm still not strong enough, or that game is just too demanding and what not. Oh well, happy that Brawl works. :)

Thanks again Alo81 and PGamer!

Edit: Brawl seems to slow down depwnding on the stage even on 1v1 and also slow down on 4players. Dunno if there are other ways to help speed it up and what not. I mean Brawl is the main game I want running butter smooth. :)

I am using the custom build. The image I get in the Rift is bad: it's upside down, zoomed in. With most games it doesn't display anything after the splash screens, there's also weird colors, or it's just black&white-ish.

What version of Dolphin are you using? Try the latest development build if you aren't already. It's supposed to be noticeably faster than 4.0.2.

It was mainly doing it when I went into menus so it wasn't too bad, just a bit annoying. Thankfully it seems to have gotten a bit better. Like someone else said, you might want to try a newer version of Dolphin because the newer ones don't let you set the FPS.

Latest build is pretty great compared to the one I downloaded back a month ago (Rev numbers in screenshots).

A very significant speed-up. Using DSP LLE in both.

I don't know if it's been mentioned, but anyone on an nvidia card should:

nvidia control panel -> manage 3D settings -> program settings -> (whatever directory you put it in) dolphin.exe -> power management mode -> prefer maximum performance

If you don't do this, nvidia's power management will throttle the crap out of the card while you are trying to run the emulator. Once you do this, the emulator will run as best it can on your nvidia card. Just keep in mind that your card's power management will be disabled while the program is running. If you forget to close the program your video card will be using it's maximum idle power the entire time even if you aren't actually running a game.

This Fiora gal seems to be working miracles ,according to these updates.
Amazing stuff as usual.

Yeah, some of the devs have mentioned that the gpu emulation is actually holding many processors back more then the cpu emulation at this point barring a few cpu intensive games (meaning the gc/wii gpu emulation done on your cpu, not the load handled by your video card).

No kidding, huge boosts:

This month, the story can't be anything else but CPU optimizations and fixes, after Fiora decided that if the code is in the JIT, she will make it faster. Nothing is safe from her. Since the end of July, Dolphin's JIT CPU core has seen a 26% performance boost in the Dolphin Benchmark. That is not a typo.

God damn those performance gains sound good. I'm excited to update to the latest build and test it out. Maybe I'll finally lock full 60fps in Super Mario Galaxy!

It's unfortunately not really possible to solidly lock games at 60 unless you have played through them before a couple times. The emu generates a shader cache on the fly as you play and this often leads to minor stuttering. On repeat plays you can have a very smooth experience though. If you update to a new revision it flushes the cache to prevent errors.

I wish they just summarize the changes with performance boosts or regressions in a pat h notes style list. Then have the big technical explanations for those that want to read. I'm guessing most games are running faster now? I saw talk of performance boosts and regressions. Glad that Skyward Sword issue got fixed.

You can actually just go through the download section and view individual revisions. It lists who made the change and what the change was. If you click on the revision number, you can check the actual code changes and look at a log of the developers discussing the revision before they approved the pull request.

Wow, I thought a game's performance improving over time was just my imagination. Had no idea.

I'm using the stable version of 4.0.2 x64 version.
"Stable" versions are typically largely outdated and not really any more "stable" than any typical daily release. Sometimes even less, in fact, as they occasionally have bugs that were already fixed weeks or months before in some dev builds.

Does anybody knows why isn't my TAB key working? the button to toggle frame limit I mean. I used it all the time to go fast through loading scenes and such but I updated my dolphin version for a Super Mario Galaxy music fix and I can't get it to work anymore..

It could simply be that your PC isn't powerful enough to speed past the area.

Try testing it out on a game which has lower performance costs.

I could do it before I updated dolphin on SMG, but I tried on Paper Mario and I couldn't do it either.

Does anyone have FPS drops (it's more of a sudden pause or stutter) with the Wind Waker HD Texture Mod? Game runs fine without it, but when I put Texture Cache Accuracy over to Safe I'll have slow downs. Using the latest Dolphin, will try an older version when I can.

With a 2500k@4.4Ghz & 280x 3GB.

Those using a DS4 controller for wiimote pointer support: how are you going about setting up your controller to do so? I can't get the touch pad mapped properly.

I started using Dolphin again last night, decided I wanted tonplay Xenoblade in HD with the texture pack. Took a couple of hours and I have to use an 'old' build but...my god. How ddi in play this on the Wii? It's a night andnday difference!

I wonder if I can get Mario Galaxy working ...probably not. I don't think my PC is beefy enough haha. I'm surprised it's handling Xenoblade, to be fair.

Such a great emulator.

Xenoblade's HD pack made me keep texture cacheing to fast. Is there a particular reason it needs to be safe for that one?

Ok I fixed this thing, now, does anybody have issues with toggle frame limit when going full screen? SMG runs at 90fps when I play the button, but then I go full screen and the TAB button to toggle frame limit doesn't work anymore, jesus

It's normal to get that stutter from texture packs. It's caused by Dolphin loading in the new textures. It needs to be set to safe because Hypatia (the person making the wonderful Wind Waker texture pack) has it set to safe while they're dumping the textures.

Try enabling Borderless window in the last graphics tab. That should probably fix it.

Those using a DS4 controller for wiimote pointer support: how are you going about setting up your controller to do so? I can't get the touch pad mapped properly.

I just mapped the pointer to my mouse and used DS4Windows J2K as my DS4 driver/program since it comes with good mouse (slide) settings. I'm sure there are other DS4 programs that work as well.

I could be wrong, but here's what I think I did in Dolphin: I set my device to Xinput Gamepad, then opened up IR (Up/Down/Left/Right) with right click and set the device there as my keyboard. You should be able to scroll down and use this Cursor information: Up: Cursor Y-. Down: Cursor Y+. Left: Cursor X-. Right: Cursor X+. That should be it. I just adjusted the slide of my touchpad (in the DS4 program) so it felt okay in Galaxy, and that was about it.

If you're trying to play something like Galaxy 2, I do recommend adding a few extra mapped buttons. For instance, I have the B button set as a face button, but I also have it set to right trigger. You can do this by right clicking the button and clicking on "OR" and detecting another button press. It would look like this: `XInput/0/Gamepad:Trigger R` | `XInput/0/Gamepad:Button B`. It's useful for when you have your thumb on the touchpad and need to shoot something.

So yeah, I think that's it. For anyone else reading: This isn't a replacement for the Wiimote, it's just useful in games like Galaxy where you sometimes may need to use a cursor, and don't want to bother with a Wiimote or your mouse.

Sorry if I'm off with any of this information. It's been a while since I set it all up.

That sounds exciting... has anyone tried Last Story on the latest builds? Curious if a 3.2ghz mobile i7 is finally enough for full speed

I just tested the game on my i5 760 OC to 3.8Ghz and it is running at 30 fps. Central plaza before was impossible to get it running full speed and right now its running perfectly with some occasional dips to 24, the lowest I have seen. Amazing job by the dolphin team.

Keep in mind that borderless windowed will give worse performance so if framerate is ever an issue disable borderless windowed and restart emulation.

Yeah I read that in the description but I haven't noticed a performance hit, I'll stay like this until It gives me issues.

By the way, is it possible to use the Dualshock 4 motion sensors in Dolphin? It would work wonders in Super Mario Galaxy, I can't get through some segments that require tilting, keyboard doesn't cut it.

Thank you so much. I just right-clicked on the IR mapping buttons, selected Dinput/KB+M for all of the inputs, and mapped them all to cursors. Thanks again.

Just tired this for the first time with F-Zero GX and have a few question. Is it possible to get the game running at a solid 60fps (or do i need 75fps)?, as at the moment the game isnt that smooth. Have noticed black boxes appearing over the UI on the menus can this be cleared up at all? Can someone chime in with what settings i need.

Also what is this frame limiter i have seen mentioned, thanks

Are you running the Oculus Rift build or vanilla Dolphin? You also can't run games at frame rates faster than they were programmed at unless you want everything in the game to be sped up.

Im using the VR build. Ive heard reports that people run the games at 75hz which speed up the games slighly but stops the judder. But at the moment for some reason F-Zero isnt running smoothly and defo not 60hz. The Vanilla Dolphin runs F-Zero flawlessly so my PC is easily up to the task (i7 4.2GHz, 7970 3GB, 16GB RAM). Do you not get these black artifacts on the menu screens then?

Wow thanks for linking that texture pack, do we have some sort of archive/index of available HD texture mods?
