Players who have purchased the Origin Island Expansion Pack cannot connect in multiplayer with players who have not purchased it. Multiplayer connection will only be possible with other owners of the Expansion Pack. The Expansion Pack needs to be activated in-game after purchase, and this can only occur once the main story has been completed.

Mode details below!

Online said:
Enjoy co-op play and explore the furthest reaches of Reveria with friends, either online or via local wireless. Even better, online multiplayer has its own chat feature that lets you send messages to other players as you explore the realm together!

As well as getting experience alongside your buddies, you can use the in-game Exchange Box to trade certain items. What’s useless to you may be just the thing they’re after!

Activate Link Mode at the Castele Guild Office and, when mates on your friend list are playing Fantasy Life at the same time, you’ll be able to send messages.

It’s a great way to swap hints and tips! On top of that, Link Mode has a notification setting that’ll communicate your Fantasy Life achievements, and lets you Applaud the landmarks reached by your friends too.

Wait, so if you get Origin Island, you cannot play with those that didn't at all? Or only Origin Island?
If the former, that sounds really bad.

I still think it's extremely lousy of Nintendo or Level-5 (whichever is to blame) to not include this in the base game as it was in the updated Japanese version which came out in 2013!

That's a bit, man, that's kinda weird.

Wait, like after I buy the DLC I can't connect with ANYONE who doesn't have it? That's really awful

Exactly the reason I canceled my preorder as this sort of stuff really bothers me. Cutting content then charging extra for it is not cool

And splitting the MP pool on top of that! Classy.

Wait so this is the DLC that is supposedly "gated" despite being included with the Japanese release of Fantasy Life Link? I thought it was supposed to be $20 (could've sworn people were saying that), but $7.99 doesn't seem so bad.

It really is bad if it actually splits the playerbase like that

There is no cut content. There were two versions of this game. One without any online MP and then Fantasy Life Link! which this localized version is based off of. Our out of the box version supports online multiplayer for everyone but the extra content from the Link! version that in Japan came as an entirely separate retail package is 7GBP/8EUR DLC. Spinning that as "cut content" just doesn't work.

Well they did hold back all the LINK content except MP to sell it to us as dlc, that is a fact. whether you call that cut out or not doesn't really matter. It was content that was done a long time ago and they simply choose not to include it in the base game.

See that's the problem. We're basically getting Fantasy Life Link only they cut the Origin island that was including in the Japanese version for the english release for some stupid reason.

Think about what happened with Bravely Default. We didn't get the original version but the updated for the Sequel version which included a bunch of refinements that made it a better overall game.

Part of the benefit of being made to wait a really long time for localization for these is that we end up getting the complete package out of the box. Well until now anyhow.

This change nothing because the Japanese version which contained that extra content is 50$ in Japan.

On amazon.com the game only is 39,99$ + 7.99$ DLC = 47.98$

So your whining is pointless because you're not been charged more than the Japanese version full version of Fantasy Life Link.
The bright side of this deal is that you will pay less than the Jaoanese version if the extra content doesn't interest you.

they added content to the base game, actually. and we are paying less than those japanese that got the double version.
btw, day one for the game. I don't think I'll buy the dlc, due to the already good amount of contents

I don't care if it's was more expensive in Japan at launch or not. They are an entirely different market then here and it's not really a surprise given how lots of games in general are more expensive there. Doesn't mean that price would fly over here especially considering it's over a year later then when Japan got the updated version let alone the original.

This is like if Namco brought over Tales of Graces F but cut out the F chapter and made us pay extra for it. That sort of thing is simply not acceptable for me.

If this really is splitting the multiplayer base, there is absolutely no way I can support this.
It was one of my most hyped E3 games too..

Even taking the localization aside, the fact that other people had to pay more for it but got the product earlier doesn't mean we deserve to get it cheaper, it's rather nice that we get to have it like that sometimes but that doesn't mean it's an obligation of them. I think this is most certainly related to the stigma that DLC has, this would probably be better received if the game was $45 but included everything.

If I jump on this I'll get the DLC no doubt. But it's weird you have to first play the whole game to even activate it and the fact that you can't play with people who don't have the expansion is even more dumb. Couldn't they just programme it in a way that you can only not play the DLC bit with people who don't have it? I mean I can play any random shooter with friends without having all the map packs. It makes no sense to me.

Oh, that's not too bad considering I'll have to buy it twice, but I'll wait until we both complete the story.

Haha I was thinking the exact same thing, I have two on pre-order right now. I guess £15 if we both play all the way to completion and want more isn't bad.

Will buy at $.99 cents on iOS, right?

The wording seems like a mistake, I'm certain it means you can't do the DLC unless the other person also has the DLC purchased. Otherwise that would be very strange to suddenly lock you out of being able to play with people who only have the vanilla game.

Still considering whether or not I should buy an extra 3DS to play with my girlfriend. If only the new 3DS came out on release day.

Far too expensive for content that's been cut from the Japanese release

I can't think of any reason for it to be DLC, if they didn't want it in the base game, should have localized sooner

Anyone want to look at the JP site/wikis to see how it worked in Japan?

The original JP version didn't have multiplayer so it's not the same.

The Origin Island DLC isn't just a new area, it's new features like equipment and items that you can bring online in the non-DLC parts of the game. That's probably why people with the DLC can't play with those that don't have it.

God, why did they feel the need to split the game up like this?

Mostly this. And what you say makes sense yeah, it's more than just a new area to explore. It would have been so much easier to just localise the whole package. Could have even raised the suggested retail price by five euros or whatever if they so desperately want to make more money. But splitting your userbase is always a terrible idea imo.
