Why don't bad games like this come out for Steam/PSN/XBLA? I mean sure, those platforms have bad games too, but not like this. Whatever those companies are doing to keep the trash out, Nintendo seriously needs to consider copying them.

Steam is still curated, I think, but I'm pretty sure the barrier to entry for PSN/XBL is simply getting a dev kit (you can self-publish on Xbone, right?). With the Web Framework on Wii U pretty much anyone can make a game.

It's only a handful of "terrible" games, if you don't like them don't buy them

You still need a dev kit for web framework I believe

I'm not a fan of TD games as most of them feel and play the same with a few exceptions, your game might be that exception. I assure you a demo would help me make the decision of buying it or not.

As for Wooden Sensey, I thought it always looked terrible on Steam and seeing people hyped about it here made me feel sad for the terrible state of the Wii U. (I don't think it was even mentioned in the steam thread)

Maybe he's gonna pay the royalties?

Maybe he is. First he'd have to approach each of them to be cleared to use them. This would involve showing what the game is, as the copyright holder usually wants to know if it's something they would want to be associated with. Then he'd have to negotiate a price. Judging by the pieces used this would not be cheap.
Alternatively just release it and hope no one notices. But if they do at any point in the future (and there are people out there whose job is to look for copyright infringements) then prepare for lawsuits.

For every Shovel Knight, there are 10 the letters, blok drop us, and IQ tests.

It's depressing.
Those are relatively new, and until then it's been pretty good on the Wii U eshop. Armillo, nano assault, teslagrand that just came out, the fall, master reboot (which although could use more polish, it's fairly neat), and much more. It's still not on that level yet. Hopefully Nintendo adjusts its policies before more trash floods the eshop.
Block Drop U's dev is actually a cool guy and his games (BDU included) are pretty decent for its price. I just finished talking to him and he apparently was doing an experiment where he made a "bad" game on purpose (the flappy bird clone) while interacting a lot with the miiverse community to see if he could get better sales than with his good games. It apparently worked really well.
and thankfully he says he doesn't plan on doing it again for the meanwhile
I found that pretty funny, if it's less than a quid I'll buy it
I don't think we should give any of these guys money less they tell their friends or word spreads and they make a lot more junk to flood the eshop

Yeah, I'm likely to do a demo for my game (ZaciSa's Last Stand).

In your case I think a demo is a must.

I mean, yours is a fun game, but there's nothing noticeable about it. Neither the name, the logo or the videos on the eshop do a good job of selling the game (or even telling what is it about).

Probably I wouldn't give it a chance if you didn't post about it on GAF

¬_¬ Let's hope the "i'll buy this because it looks so awful" crowd doesn't find about it

Japan's eShop releases next week
Wii U
Mach Rider (Famicom) - ¥514
Super Chinese World(Super Famicom) - ¥823
F-Zero: GP Legend (GBA) -¥702

3DS
Touch Battle Ninja(Silver Star) - ¥500
Tangram Style (Arc System Works)- ¥500

Same here, hopefully you'll have a demo out when the game releases over here.
Also, anectodal but I know of a few people who straight up skipped it because of the name.
Honestly I can't say ZaciSa's Last Stand is a name that entices me to check out what kind of game it is, I know I wouldn't if not for Gulatica being a fellow gaffer.

Would you consider changing the title for the Euro release? I honestly think you should, something a bit more catchy can't hurt... although I can see why, probably for sentimental reasons, you wouldn't be thrilled in changing the name you chose in the first place

I agree with this. Tower defense games aren't that niche, so I think the biggest turn-off is the name. I don't even know how to pronounce ZaciSa's, and I imagine others feel the same way.

I am very curious what the sales numbers for games like The Letter, IQ Test, and some of these similar games look like? Anyone have any guesses?

Are they selling enough copies where it's worth the time of just making shovelware for a quick buck?

Don't get me wrong, there are some awesome cheap games on the eShop worth the price of admission, but I feel like those are created by people who are genuinely trying to make a fun game. But the people putting out questionable games for a quick buck will go away once they realize they will sell at most a few hundred copies of a game for $3, right?

I assume that most of them are selling well. Look at RCMADIAX, he has a new game released/announced every few months, and his price's started at $2, but now he is dedicated to the $1 price point, and this makes his games even more tempting to the casual buyer.

Hmm, what would be a better name for the game?

I am not a very creative person, so I probably cannot recommend a good name. All I know about your game is that it is a tower defense game in space. If it were me, I would call it something like "Space Base", because you are defending a base in space.

I have to admit my shame, restarting Fore Emblem on Casual mode. Just don't have the time to play it properly

Do not listen to the people who go on about how that is not the real experience. I see them save-spamming and reloading over and over! No need for that bs. Enjoy the game, it would be a shame not to!
I had a blast with it on casual, and I finished it after sinking about 80 hours into it. "Casual" mode, whatever. Loved the game for being beginner friendly!

Honestly I played it on Classic and I somewhat regretted it because I'd make myself restart, etc. I'd say put it on hard (since at least that's more of a challenge), but "Casual" is probably a great experience and less stressful.

Even if you're a restarter, I would still choose Casual. Just for those odd instances where you get hit by an unlikely crit near the end of a map. I think there's plenty of merit to wanting to keep a clean sheet during the mission, but shit like that just plain sucks.

For those of you who downloaded the Wooden Sen'SeY demo, how many of you ended up purchasing it afterwards? How would you say the demo helped or didn't help you purchase the game?

I had no intention of buying Wooden Sen'SeY regardless, but the demo got me to at least try it. Turns out it was a little better than I thought, but I really don't need another sidescrolling platformer. It at least raised awareness in a flooded category. It will probably enjoy some better eShop visibility for a while too since they often change up the image used to represent the Demo section.

I also admit I haven't tried your game either. Even watching the vid, I'm not sure I understand it. Goofy name and gameplay images are pretty abstract. I'm not saying a demo would make your sales skyrocket, but if your game is good, a short demo helps. If your game isn't so hot, a demo wouldn't help much. And if you add too much content to a demo, there's not enough reason to buy...

Heh. That was my thinking. If I'm just going to be restarting every time someone dies , I may as well just play on Casual. Got a baby due in a few days, I don't need more stress, lol

GulAtiCa, let me say this:

I've not played your game, but I've seen a lot of screenshots and to be frank, I have no idea what's happening in any of them--I see a bunch of circles and other simple shapes that don't seem to represent anything in particular, I can't tell what it is that the player is supposed to be doing or how they might do it... I mean, I know it's a tower defense game but I still can't parse what's going on, so I can't even imagine what it looks like to someone who's just stumbled over your game without having read a review or seen any of your posts.

(I can't watch any trailers right now, but the first one I saw on google is almost 4 minutes long, which already sets off a few alarm bells.)

As for the name... maybe "Doodle Defense: ZaciSa's Last Stand" or something? The word "defense" has semiotic value and will immediately communicate a lot of things about the game and how it plays, and the "doodle" part helps to contextualise the visual style as a deliberate aesthetic choice rather than just "programmer art" or whatever (even if that's exactly what it is!). "Doodle" might be a little too whimsical, I just like alliteration.

I'm just spitballing here, so feel free to criticise and/or ignore anything I've said. I enjoy reading your posts about the game and your experiences, so I hope I can help you out a little.

I never said anything because I didn't want to come off too harshly, but add me to the list of people completely befuddled by Zacisa's Last Stand after reading about it and watching the trailer.

Time to chime in on ZaciSa's Last Stand..

I think the basic game is rather good, although it took me a while to warm up to it. I do think you might consider the following changes:

1) Add some alternate themes.
I know you said you weren't an artist, but, in all honestly, the game looks rather ugly and off-putting at first glance. I see the "sketchy" look you were going for, but perhaps an alternate "glowy,", Tron/Geometry Wars theme might be a nice change? Perhaps 2-3 alternate graphics packs... nothing that splashy, but perhaps a "vector" theme, an "8-bit" theme...
Actually, now that I think about it, a vector theme + some sort of "techno-esque" music might work well for a theme pack AND a new trailer.

2) Get a catchier name.
Keep ZaciSa's Last Stand as a subtitle, but give it a more direct title... maybe something like "DEEP SPACE DEFENSE: ZaciSa's Last Stand" or something like that.

3) Offer a "TURBO" speed mode
Even when the game is on FAST mode, early levels take FAR too long to complete. Maybe I don't micromanage enough...

3) Add another mode.
This is a wild idea, and I have no clue how to implement it, but I feel like the game needs either another mode OR a better form of escalation, or something like that. Perhaps a few different forms of enemies? Some SORT of inter-system interaction...

4) High score table.
There needs to be some way to see other scores compared against your own.

5) Wacky Concept Time: Mii Mode
I don't know what the rules are like regarding this, but it would be fun if your bases were represented by Miis, or something like that. It's silly, but might add some polish -- I noticed some budget Wii games supported Miis, so I assume it's possible on the Wii U indie stuff, but I really have no idea.

In any event, you basic game is good, but I kind of want there to be -more- to the game... and somewhat wish the difficulty scaled a bit differently. I might just not be good enough -- I tend to get to level 20, and then sort of stall out. I'd like it to get wackier and crazier over time...

Oh!

6) Buy new base points?
Perhaps you could enable the ability to either MOVE or ADD base spots.

If he's got any sense he should cover (rerecord) the tunes himself or get someone to do it for him so he'd only be liable for writing royalties on the music and I don't think he'd need clearance

day 1
Nintendo, QUALITY CONTROL.

Anyway, I've set the final preparations for pairing off all my Fire Emblem Awakening characters. My favorite match-ups got made and my not so favorite people got paired up with their best leftovers. Whoever can guess who I left out in the cold can get an Internet cookie or something.

Yeah, you still need a dev kit for Wii U even with NWF. That's the worrying thing, these games are selling well enough to cover that cost. Good for them, but I do worry that the indie scene on Wii U will be dead and ignored by the time I release!

It's not as if the Wii U is getting iOS levels of shovelware every day, it's more like two or three lazy games a month. You'll be fine.

Yeah, I hope you're right. It's just scary because other devs are showing off new projects in the Developer area and many of them are just these quick cashgrabs. There's a torrent on the way...

this quality control meme (pun intended) is bullshit to me.
for years I've heard critics about too harsh policies from Nintendo, and I agree. If ONE thing was managed in the right way about the Wii U is the new open approach to other developers, that started too late, and only towards indie developers, but that's THE right thing they did. Putting censorship on developers would simply be a wrong thing to do, imho. Will some bad game sell? Yes. Will some good game not sell? Yes. That happens, in the competitive market. It's marketing, you know. It's part of the commercial process. If someone is able to find the "right" tool to attract people, even fooling them about the quality of their product, it's not Nintendo fault. If someone will be burnt, will not trust the developer anymore. Faking that's Nintendo fault is bullshit. Those interested in quality games have the "tools" and "skills" to recognize them, imho, without the censoring seal of quality. A game is crap? Say it: on Miiverse, voting with stars, on forums. A game is great? SAY IT. On Miiverse, on forums, voting on the eshop.

Btw, I've exploited the cross-discount for Steamworld Dig on Wii U, double dip after the 3DS release I've got months ago.
and you know what? The game is gorgeous on the Wii U.
I'm rating it 4/5 stars on the eshop.
I'm spreading the appreciation on Miiverse community.
And here on GAF.

There are so few demos on the Wii U eshop that I will download and play any game that has a demo by default, just to try something new. If I like the game, I'll buy it. I actually think it should be compulsory for ALL games to have a demo on the eShop, either that or timed play. It would help consumers and it would help developers.

The Birthday Skeleton
I totally agree with Aostia here. It's not like you can't find the good indie games because of the shovelware. Nintendo is promoting a lot of the good indie games on front page usually and gives more visibility to them by including them in their videos, Nintendo Directs etc. The market should be the filter here, not Nintendo.

5-6 times? Posting in dead threads is boring. I post about other games too, I just haven't had time to play them is all. Still bummed about the limited avatar customization in Pokémon X, not digging the Dark World music in ALBW, stuck on OoT, not liking Layton, leisurely strolling through Bravely Default because I've already pieced together the twist and giving SMT4 a small break. Probably missing a game in there somewhere. I'm not buying another 3DS game for a long long time. Basically until I can get Persona Q for $25.

Considering demos can often put off more people than they attract (even to top quality games sometimes) compulsory demos are a terrible thing, it should be the choice of true developers whether to do one

I was slightly curious about the game but I had some doubts and the demo confirmed them.
But even without a demo, I would have read reviews and watch more footage and my conclusion would have been the same.

You mean because they are not sufficient to show off the true nature of the game?
Maybe it's just me then because I can tell within 5 or 10 mins of playing pretty much any game from basic Indie title to full blown AAA blockbuster whether I am going to like it or not.
