Halo TMCC Full Campaign Preview (H2A runs at 1328 x 1080 native)

Are there any advantages running at this strange res? If it is the same amount of pixels as 900p why not just run at 900p. Marketing?
My guess would be that it has something to do with running the original version at 1920x1080 at the same time while being able to switch back and forth instantly. Maybe scaling horizontally only is better than doing both?

Woah, Halo 4 looks absolutely awesome, even on IGN's player. Not massively surprising given that it was already gorgeous and just was held back by the 360s resolution, framerate, and AA -- but that is still prettier than I expected.

Weird resolution for the H2A campaign and slightly disappointing -- though I imagine a whole slew of technical bottlenecks are present simply trying to keep the original engine underneath. Considering how much better Halo 4 and H2A multiplayer look than the H2A campaign, I'd genuinely be surprised if it was a console limitation.

For those saying it isn't native 1080 because it's running two engines at once, isn't Halo: CE Anniversary running two engines at the same time as well at native 1080? Genuine question here.

Halo CE Anniversary is running Xbox 360 fidelity assets at 1080p with some rendering and lighting improvements. H2A is running higher res textures, geo, characters and animation AND running the OG engine at the same time.

Get rid of the instant switch please.

Yes. This. Who wants to see chunky old Xbox graphics anyway?

no one that's who...

I kept my old school Xbox and Xbox 360... So if I want to see nasty graphics Halo 2, why wouldn't I just go fire one of those up?

People who throw their old consoles away have no right to complain in my totally correct opinion.

As in I don't see an explanation why Halo: CE, 3, and 4 can all hit 1080p but Halo 2 can't. Also rather disappointing I can't shoot Ghost fuel tanks anymore :/

Halo 2 Anniversary is running two engines at the same time.

3 and 4 are one game engine respectively, Halo: CEA is running two game engines but with less intensive properties, so they all reach 1080p60fps.

Does this include Halo 2 classic mode as well, or just Anniversary mode?

edit: nvm, answered on page 1. H2 classic is full 1080p. Good stuff!

The Order is 800p, isn't it? I don't care about the resolution wars nonsense anyway though.
It's 1920x800, which is more total pixels than 900p (1600x900). 800p would be even lower. Because The Order is letterboxed it'll maintain a native scale instead of being upscaled.

it's to bad they included that little snippet about resolution at the end there because there is some solid information in here that is going to be overshadowed.

-in addition to upgrading all the graphics they have also upgraded all the sound effects
-rumble triggers are in except halo 1 and 2s are going to be I included in a patch later.
- forge looks to be in and untouched

This is going to be a great compilation.

This is my guess too. Makes sense.

No, it's a bit goofier than that because it's actually rendering the black bars, so it is technically 1080p, but the actually playable space is 1920x800. It's not scaling anything, though, since it's meant to be in scope ratio, so nothing is going to get stretched.

Regardless of res, I will enjoy it.

How will the title engine work switching from game to game at different res? It's all good because of upscale?

Engine switch is a novelty that nobody will use more than a couple of times. It's a cool feature, but I'm sure as hell not buying this collection to replay Halo 2 with old ass graphics.

So for those of us who don't give two shits about seeing hoe the game looked before get shafted. He's basically saying if we didn't have to accommodate running the old engine we could have hit a true 1080p resolution. I find that pretty lame. You can't tell me a majority of people care about switching back and forth.

Would it be possible to patch in a toggle for people who want to run just H2A at 1920 x 1080? If not, I'll still enjoy the shit out of the game. Just would be nice to have the option for those of us who want to enjoy the first run of H2A in native 1080p, then possible subsequent runs with the ability to toggle old and new.

The instant switch is a trade show feature. No one will be switching after the first hour of their play session. If it is possible to get full 1080p by ditching the instant switch they should. It is an obvious choice.

If the switching thing really is the issue, just drop the switching thing. Include the old version as a separate entity or something.

actually going back to the video Halo 2 looks damn impressive. i wish November would get here already..

Is there a reason why two engines running simultaneously is necessary?

Because they want to give people the option of playing it how it was back in the day or updated to look like a modern release, only way they can do that is by running both, presumably

Wasn't expecting H2A to be running at 1080p, it's good to hear that they came close. Wonder if the multiplayer of H2A do run in 1080p.

I for one am glad that the instant switching exist
Ladies and gentleman. 32MB of ESRAM.
Ladies and gentleman. A shitpost.

Is there a reason they opted for that odd resolution and not 900p?

Someone said above, it seems that because the original engine runs at 1920x1080 and the new one runs at 1328x1080, it's easier to switch from a ****x1080 to a ****x1080 res than a ****x900 to ****x1080.

Can anyone explain why the "instant switch" impacts resolution?

surely the code says:

if (engine == Engine.Old)
{
oldEngine.DrawScene();
}
else
{
newEngine.DrawScene();
}

There's no need to render both in a single frame?!

Is there a reason they opted for that odd resolution and not 900p?

The old engine runs it at 1080p simultaneously with the new engine at 1328x1080 and the versions can be changed on the fly. I'm guessing the switch from one to the other looks better at the new resolution.
