Playstation TV Thread: Vita Who?

It won't help. I posted a video early in the thread where I have a PS4 and PSTV connected to monitors side by side. The DS4 was connected to the PSTV and remote playing which still displays everything on the PS4. I could play games just fine when watching the PS4's screen, but not on to the PSTV.

So the lag is purely in the video encoding/decoding process. Since the Vita's remote play works much better for most people, it has to be something with the decoding of the image, or maybe a laggy HDMI encoder chip, while the Vita has a faster display chip.

I have the exact same lag on my Vita and have since launch. I could even play perfectly using the Vita if I looked at the TV just like the PSTV with the Dual Shock. Apparently others don't? Maybe I just haven't noticed the actual discussion, but it seems like there are widely different experiences being had here.

Perhaps it's lag your TV is adding to the process?

Yeah I actually figured that before I even set it up and instead hooked it up to an HDMI on my ASUS gaming monitor with some absurdly low latency. But it is always a good point for people to think of if there are having strange laggyness.

No really noticeable lag for me using wireless although I did notice that the quality of picture was downgraded.

For me, there are two reasons which justify this $99 purchase.

#1 Remote Play - works perfectly for me (wired setup for both PS4 & PSTV). Connection is more stable than my Vita and best of all it allows the use of dualshock4

#2 Vita on TV - playing Sword Art Online, Persona 4 and Dragon Crown on the big screen is great, and it's easy transferring save files from my Vita when I reach home using PS+ cloud service.

What I'm not happy with is the library compatibility issue which many have rightly pointed out. No excuse there, Sony really fucked up in that area. Other than that though, I'm really enjoying my experience with it so far.

My main problem I have with people is things either have to be a 0 or 10. I would rate it about a 7 myself mainly missing points for a bad menu system, some key games not having a patch to work, and some compatible PSOne games not working. I think 8/10 of my library works on it.

I think in my case the frustration stems from spending frankly most of my PS4 gaming time playing via remote play on Vita and expecting the same or better experience with the added Ethernet jack. I'm still not sure what the problem is but with everything wireless within arms reach there is still something not working as well as the famously bad Vita wifi chip. Wired seems to help with dropouts but not much for latency. I would just assume I'm crazy, but it seems to be a pretty common issue. Maybe like is the case with framerate some of it has to do with being on a larger display and being more noticable but I'm not convinced. And this is all been used on a high end PC gaming specific high-response monitor. I don't dare hook it up to my normal TV at this point if I want to convince myself not to ship it back.

The only thing I can guess could be the issue, like others have suggested is something to do with converting the signal to 720/1080i within the PSTV. Perhaps because of cheap upscaling hardware there is a decent amount of lag introduced in the process? For fun I wired them through a gigabit switch in the same room with no measurable difference so thats all I've got left.

I have always found remote play to be good enough on Vita, but pretty close to the fine line. PSTV crosses into being something you notice the whole time and compensate for in a way that just isn't fun while playing.

I realize people have different tolerances for this kind of thing and for many it will be fine. But I have been left annoyed. The apps would have been great but I expected Sony to drop the ball on them. And compatibility isn't great, but ditto. The one thing I never expected was some bizarre regression in the one feature I figured would no doubt be at least on par with my Vita.

And to answer an earlier post, I'm pretty sure the PSTV connects the controllers via bluetooth even when they are plugged in and charging. Other than sending a quick authorization so that you can sync them. Having them use another protocol and direct connect would require extra firmware mods and maybe even hardware that wasn't onboard the Vita and I'm sure as hell sure Sony wouldn't invest in that when they can just beam it all over the existing connection and treat it like a dump-charging port.

Already had Persona 4 Golden, so that was a no brainer... looks darn great. Actually playing it, as my relationship with the Persona games is around buying them because I love the art, setting, concept...but barely playing them.

Got Akiba's Trip too and it also oooks great. Fun game too, the whole targeting areas to remove clothes is fun.

Spookys stream looks pretty good. I mean, it's paused right now but it was running pretty well.

I think I'm gonna buy it right now. I'll probably hook it up in the living room so it can be connected via Ethernet and my brother and I can stream via Remote Play while leaving my PS4 in my room.

I dont see it asked much, but I expect all PSP games you can download on a regular Vita are compatible with this right out of the box?

It's the only question I want to know to be honest at the moment.

I'd get one of these right away if Metal Gear Ac!d 1 or 2 ever showed up on the store -_-

Not all. Creature Defense downloads, installs and plays on my Vita, but is not playable on the PSTV.

I think I know the answer, but just to make sure... For those using a DS4, do you have to re-pair every time you want to use it on the other system (PS4 to PSTV and vice-versa)?

I might buy a second controller or the DS3 bundle if that's the case.

My reason for buying a PSTV would be mainly just as PS4 extender/PS4 Remote Play.

Based on the impressions here, I should probably wait is that correct?

My PS4 is hard wired and the PSTV would be wireless (unless I figure out a hard wire solution) and what I have been reading is that the lag would be noticeable unless both devices are hard wired. Is this correct?

So tempted to buy one but these PS4 remote play impressions are holding me back.

Advice?

The total lack of any headphone option is a bummer. I hope they'll eventually patch in either support for their USB wireless headsets, or headphone out on the DS4.

Support of their own pulse headsets would be great (don't see any reason they can't support that with the USB port), or as you said, at least support the DS4 headphone out.

Yep. If you're only using 1 controller between the 2 units, you need to pair them every time.

It's why I just bought an additional DS4 and paired the DS3 on the bundle with the PSPGo.

Got mine in the mail today. Apologies if this has already been asked but it I somehow manage a usb to usb connection to the PC will content manager work or am I stuck with wifi? I suppose LAN is out of the question as well?

Well there may be technical reasons why they can't.

The USB port so far looks like it's only used for pairing and charging controllers, maybe it doesn't actually have the full USB stack exposed to the firmware that would be needed to implement USB audio. The real Vita has no USB host controller (I think??) so maybe the USB port on the PSTV is not fully operational.

As for the DS4 headphone out, that feature may possibly depend on a feature of Bluetooth that the Vita's Bluetooth controller may be too simple/outdated to support. Maybe BT 4.0 or something, I don't know what version of Bluetooth is on the PS4?

ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
Just want to say that I've been playing Corpse Party on my Vita TV + Samsung Smart TV 55" and the music sounds good and very eerie.

The graphics look like shit though.

If anyone is buying this mostly for Remote Play I would say wait or don't buy. The lag is bad and gets worse if anything else happens to be going on at the same time on your home network.

With 75/75 Verizon FIOS and both PS4 and PSTV wired to a gigabit router (even though the PSTV at least is only 100mb nic) I get unplayable lag on Destiny while my wife is on Netflix which is the whole reason I bought the PSTV in the first place. When Netflix isn't playing it isn't horrible but it is bad enough that doing anything other than super casual play is next to impossible, no high level daily or weekly missions/strikes and certainly no Raids.

When in remote okay there is a strange lag/hitch/delay that sometimes is smooth then slows down for a second or two then maybe speeds up again all while never really hitting even 25fps steady.

If you are buying this for remote playing anything other than a casual slow paced game you are going to be disappointed, it's a great concept with terrible execution.

Everyone keeps mentioning their download and upload speeds. This shouldn't matter at all when it comes to in house ps4 to pstv streaming. It's happening over internal wifi (or it should be). You should be able to disconnect your modem from your router and you'd still have a home wifi network that devices can communicate on. It shouldn't matter if you have 1Mbps down or Gigabit down. The stream doesn't talk to your ISP.

Edit - and I'm not saying that this should affect your stream quality. Just that your speed from your ISP does not affect this and you can remove the ISP from your troubleshooting. What you want to be doing is basic wifi troubleshooting (interference, placement, etc)

Mostly been playing Muramasa Rebirth and SK Versus on this, both control great. Took a quick peek at Killzone Mercenary, seems perfect except missing a gyro aiming option (it seems DS3's gyro does NOT emulate the Vita's gyro at all BTW?) and an option for L2/R2 for aiming/shooting.

Native-res 2D looks great on PSTV, and I'm honestly quite impressed with native res 3D. It's really only aliasing that looks any worse, or PSP 3D games (but I mean...they kinda always looked bad). Pixelart seems pretty unmolested too, the Badman games look alright. Wipeout Pure hurts my eyes, but I'm not sure it would look any better with the best scaler in the world.

Quite satisfied with the purchase myself, explicitly bought it for PSP and Vita exclusive games on the TV (strictly speaking I could emulate PSP, but PPSSPP's timing is off too much to do Patapon).

Haven't even tried remote play, I guess I should just to play with it. My PS TV is literally 2 feet from my PS4 though so it's not like I need it myself.

I was mostly posting the fact that I was using a wired connection and have Internet so fast that neither should be the issue (bad routers can certainly stuggle to prioritize traffic across a small network that leads to connection related issues) the issue is squarely with the technology hardware and software solution Sony chose to implement remote play. It is a flawed and technically inferior method.

Soooo... I just played Gods Eater Burst for the first time ever.

I've been missing out.

For anyone who has played it as well as Freedom Wars, are they similar? Looking forward to Freedom Wars on the PSTV.

Oh yeah, I hear you and wasn't directing that straight at you. Just have seen a bunch of people saying "I have ##Mbps this shouldn't be this bad!" And was trying to edumacate;)

Besides shitty remote play, the more time I spend with this thing, the more I love it. Games look great in 720p and everything controls beautifully (except for TxK. How do I use the smarr bomb!?). Gonna sell my Vita and just use this exclusively.

I really want to import one from the states, but not sure if my AU account will work with it...

In the middle of working on some Shadows of Mordor trophies when my wife wanted to watch TV, so I simply went to the bedroom and continued on the PSTV. Such a great option to have now, I'm loving it.

So how many here are fully wired and using remote play? Is it better than Vita ?

I am, and it seems to be, unsurprisingly, much better for me. Granted in the past using my Vita I would occasionally have wifi issues that I am pretty sure were at least partially related to my PS4 being just close enough to trigger direct connection occasionally - I really wish I had noticed that setting on the PS4 when I was was using remote play on my Vita. But regardless, having PSTV and my PS4 wired has made it work beautifully for me (I don't play twitch-heavy action games or anything very often), my only real complaint now is using a DS3 is a bit annoying for PS4 games mainly because of the different feel to the sticks. I'm very used to DS4's already, and I think I'll end up getting another DS4 just for that reason.

I used remote play off and on with Vita and wired PS4 and it was garbage. I used it on PSTV (wireless) and wired PS4 and it was unplayable. However, wired them both today as a test and it played really well. MUCH better than Vita.

Unfortunately, no.

I have tried the following (via downloading to PS3 and then using CM):

Metal Gear Solid Peacewalker
Silent Hill: Shattered Memories
Castlevania: Dracula X

None of these worked.

It's operational enough that keyboards and microphones work.

Remote play has always been hit or miss for me. I don't think it's network, I think it's software. I'll have times I go into Remote Play, it'll tell me twice that the network connection is too slow, 3rd time it'll connect and look as good as Remote Play can be.

Played around with my late arriving PSTV last night; having suspend/resume for PS1 games has been great so far. I no longer have to try and find save points when I want to call it quits for the night in Xenogears.

Was playing Danganronpa this weekend (need to beat it) and love it!

I also last night hooked up my PS TV to another TV and remote played my PS4 on it while doing dungeons in FFXIV. LOVE IT! :D

Swapping memory cards works fine, all I have noticed is I have to turn on and off my alarm in Wake-Up Club to activate it on my Vita after swapping cards.

Grr, Just about the preorder one but I don't know what to do concerning psone classics. I want to use both my EU account for Vita games and a separate US account for psone classics. I just don't want 50hz games. Hmm. Guess I would have to buy two vita memory cards?

if your netflix is messing up with remote play, it seems like your router is causing the issue. Playing Netflix should not have any influence on remote play experience, or anything else that is happening on your network.
