Splatoon and Sunset Overdrive are the most important games this generation

This is EDI itself the most hyperbolic thread this generation.

Also, original poster appears to have completely missed Plants Versus Zombies Garden Warfare, which is an utterly amazing team based shooter that is also insane and completely different in style and direction to other FPSs out there.

I agree with you about PvZGW.

sunset overdrive, while potentially awesome, looks like a mishmash of your popular, over-the-top action games such as ratchet and clank, dead rising, infamous, jet-set radio, etc. nothing i have seen demonstrates novelty.

Have to agree with this, minus the potentially awesome. It looks really derivative rather than original. Even the enemies look like rejects from Resistance 3.

There's tons of games where you're competing to paint over an area before someone else. I don't see how adding a reticle to it makes it somehow more important.
Tons? Well I must be really uninformed then?
Besides, it's not really the "paint an area to win" idea that makes Splatoon great, its what you can do with the squid mechanics, the movement, hiding, dodging, etc...

rofl? Most important games of a gen? No, we are only a year in right now. Splatoon is doing some new things, SO is not.

SO looks interesting, but Insomniac hasn't delivered a great experience since Crack in Time. I do like the art direction, but am afraid it's a rental at best. Never thought I'd lose faith in Insomniac, but I have.

Splatoon feels a lot more creative to me, and will likely have more lasting power.

Splatoon? Sure I guess

Sunset Overdrive? Nah, it looks good but I don't see how it could be important.

And how does Splatoon look important? Looks like an Xbox 360-era downloadable game to me. I don't see how either of these games is all that important to anyone other than the folks making them. They both look like a lot of fun though.

Hyperbolic statement imo. SO is definitely my most anticipated release this year (I knew what to expect from FH2) and from what I've played, it won't let me down, but it won't be one of the most important games this gen. It will be great fun though and that's all that matters to me..

How well they will actually turn out is anyone's guess since they are not out yet but depending on how successful they are, it could have serious implications for this generation. Why do I think this? The answer is 2 fold:

1) Creativity
Both Splatoon and Sunset Overdrive seem to fall into familiar territory with their respective genres but both games breathe new life into it either by unconventional travel methods, unconventional weaponry or in the case of Splatoon making the goal NOT to kill the other player but to claim the majority of the map.

2) Art direction
These games are rich with style and both are not afraid at all to be colorful. This is nothing new for Nintendo but the fps genre for them is. For Sunset Overdrive this game is bold enough to have color and style whereas most other third person shooters are some spectrum of brown.

So, the first person and third person shooter genres I believe could seriously use some shaking up and I think these games are the ones to do it. If these fail we could be hiding behind brown waist high objects or running through yet another military campaign for a long, long time.

I haven't seen anything new out of Splatoon that I haven't seen in other third person shooters.

Unless you think THPS Graffiti mode turned into a TPS is new

Rime fits those criteria too, so why isn't it on your list, OP?

I have a hunch

Probably because Rime is pretty far from release date.
That being said, I have to agree with you. Rime + Ori and the Blind Forest are way more exciting than Bloodborne and Halo 5 for me.

I know not everybody is gonna agree with this thread, but I definitely do.
Yeah, see games that strive for realism are fine by me. However, I grown a bit bored of them. While Bloodborne and Witcher 3 will be good games, they do not excite me because they are going for realism. I get way more excited for games that go outside of reality like Saints Row and Blood Dragon.

I don't have interested in either of them, nor in Garden Warfare, but I'm very glad they exist. They are all games that try to do something different in the genre, which I can only applaud.

If we talk industry relevance Destiny seems to be very important. Not because it is a high quality game but because it proved that always online games are accepted by the console market.
The next two important games I would name are Battleborn and The Order 1886. Again quality aside, these two games will show if the market accepts the MOBA model on a AAA level and if the classic high budget single player game is still viable.

Been colourful or graphics are not important to me. What is the most important is gameplay that both games seem lack of it.

They look like Sega games from some crazy alternate universe where Dreamcast won the console war. In short, they both look really fuckin' cool!

I dont think we can discuss 'most imoportant game this generation' until MGSV, Bloodborne, SmashU, Bayonetta 2, The Witcher 3, ZeldaU, Uncharted 4 and Halo 5 are out and have had time to impact the market. So far Destiny seems like the most important/impactful even though I feel its a crap game.

Seems all devs have to do is take a generic genere and add some colour to get "oooh much creative , so different" responses.

Splatoon looks to be genuinely trying something different , but is releasing on a dead platform, it won't influence the industry any more than the other Nintendo franchises.

SO has a nice art style , but it doesn't deviate that far from your standard open world formula.

Nothing about SO looks very innovative. The art style has been done before (is still cool) and the gameplay is throwback to PS2-era if anything.

Splatoon looks like a fun mini-game. Hopefully it's more robust than it looks because it would be great if it took off. Highly unlikely given the userbase though.

I thought Wolfenstein already took that mantle?

I think both games will be great but I wouldn't predict huge sales for either one, necessarily. And other publishers/developers generally copy other games when they're successful financially.

it also proved that devs can release incomplete games as long as they're fun and have "hooks".

Sunset would be way more important to GAF of it wasn't XB1 exclusive.

Sunset Overdrive would be 'mediocre shit' on Gaf if it wasn't for COLORS. Because people get blinded by shitty gameplay if it's colorful around here. Like how some people hold reverence for PoP 2008.

I respectfully disagree.

For one, this is the first I have heard of splatoon, and I am on GAF multiple times a day. Which doesn't bode well for the average gamer.

And I also don't know anyone outside of GAF who knows much if anything about Sunset Overdrive.

For two, yes, they look creative and fun, and unlike most other games we are playing right now. But that doesn't make them neccisarily more important. It also doesn't mean we should want more more more of it. There was a time when games about Modern Warfare were a blip on the radar compared to games about WWII and Scifi shooters. 8 years later and we are starting to see some scifi shooters make a return, but WWII is still long dead. I want my Brothers in Arms HH sequel dammit!

Only as far as consoles go, indie gaming lives in a parallel universe where amazing things happen regardless of the sales outcome of these two titles.

It is kind of important for Nintendo since this is their attempt at the popular online shooter category. The hope is that they can establish this franchise as a once per gen thing like Smash and Kart, especially since Nintendo needs to expand their online multiplayer games library. It would be cool to have my go to racer, fighter and shooter on a Nintendo system. I love the concept.

Splatoon, maybe.

Sunset Overdrive, most likely not.

how about we have this thread after they release and not embarrass ourselves

I agree on Splatoon, not Sunset Overdrive. Sunset Overdrive is just a nice style on top of an old idea. Splatoon is just new (to me, anyways).

Destiny was supposedly the most important. Halo will next year because it will prove whether the series still has legs. Crackdown will the next year because it will prove or disprove cloud assisted gaming. Shenmue III will be the next year because it will prove that all the internet hype is a bunch of people who have never played it and will not buy it because the design has aged horribly. The next year Destiny 2 will be the most important because it will prove whether bungie still knows how to make games with stories.
