Microsoft Q1: 2.4 M 360+XBO shipped

10M sold was announced on the 12th of August during Gamescom.

So they were probably around 9.9 mill in the beginning with August...that leaves roughly 5 months -including holidays- to reach 8m, from which 2m was done in 2 months....my bet is PS4 will end up around 16.5-17m. They don't really have a heavy hitter for the holidays..

  • Whole division made $2.45B Revenue, $479M gross margin.
  • Surface revenue $908M -> Xbox Revenue $1.5B.
  • Xbox revenue up 54% yoy
  • Surface gross margin was positive.
  • "Xbox platform gross margin impacted by mix shift to next generation consoles"
*Surface and Xbox are in the same division
Microsoft hates to give anything away.

Only thing you can really tell is that the Xbox One is selling at a worse (negative???) margin as compared with the 360. (which we already knew, of course).

Looking at 7.5 now on xbox and a guess of 12.5 on ps4 (sold to retailers), i could see Xbox shrinking the gap with their strong holiday lineup by perhaps 1-2 milllion...but still Ps4 with huge lead coming out of the holidays

you mean other then GTA5, COD and AC5 ? Because each and everyone of these will move a fuckton of ps4's.

As in I don't get it ;-) Especially on here ....

Never gonna happen, I predict XB1 will never outship PS4 in any Q of its life. Even with the stronger holiday line up they stand a chance to match in US/UK but Europe is so far in Sony's favour it'll give them a huge advantage.

LOL they'll outsell the ps4 by 1-2 million over the holidays? are you insane?

in order to shrink the gap by 2 million, the one has to sell 1 million consoles more then ps4 per month for the next two months.

maybe 12.

I can't see the ps4 selling 7-8 million consoles between October and December. I'll say 4-5 more

Even with Destiny, PS4 only sold 500k in NA, in September, 4-5m more means 1.5m every month, judging from PS4's holiday line up it is very unlikely unless EU pull off a 1m/month crazy move or Sony did something crazy marketing wise.

Imo GTA,COD and AC will sell gangbusters for them in europe.
Retailers will do bundles for all of them like they did with Fifa.

500k in US only.

Damn ninja edit.

Do you mean that Xbox will outsell the PS4 by 1-2 million, or just sell 1-2 million? It sounds like you mean the first by suggesting that they'll shrink the gap, but I can't possibly think of a scenario where Microsoft sells 1-2 million sales more the PS4 (at least this holiday). America provides the best opportunity, but I really doubt they could pull off

HAHAHAHA, how the hell did you come to that conclusion?

In my estimated...

~7.3m Xbones shipped

Can be lower or higher but definitively lower than 7.6m.

PS. Last figure was < 5.8m (based in the 84m 360 shipments announce).

I think I'm one of the more optimistic people on the board when it comes to xbox november/december, and I think the absolute best case scenario is that MCC/COD put the XB1 over the PS4 by 700k. Even that is VERY optimistic and relies on a killer holiday bundle (and for sony to do nothing).

Ever since that annoucement, the only figures we know for sure are:
~700k in the US
~94k in Japan

Likely another 800k at the very least (probably higher than that since US+Japan was less than half the 10M sales in August) from the rest of the world.

So Surface had a break-even quarter faster than it took Xbox to accomplish the same thing.

Sweet!

Taken on its own, it's seems that the Xbone is stabilising and probably won't be following the WiiU down the drain.

Of course, it's still getting utterly wrecked by the PS4's sales, and I would expect that to continue in the short to medium term. The PS4 seems to have successfully captured the Madden/FIFA audience, and the Destiny deal proved to be smart. I expect the PS4 version of Call of Duty Advanced Warfare to outsell the Xbone version.

The problem MS have is that if they outsell Sony by a decent margin in the US it will mean next to nothing in the worldwide numbers because the rest is so much in Sonys corner.

For them to shrink the gap by 1 to 2 million they would have to out sell the PS4 by that much in the next 2 months. now tell me how you see that happening?

How do you arrive at that? (Just curious)
We have a estimate the last quarter shipment due the 360 reaching 84m near E3... so to 360 reach 84m Xbone can do at max 5.8m.

Xbone last quarter: < 5.8m

* It is lower than that because 84m was at early June... the final shipment was end of June... if they shipped more .2m 360 in June then you have Xbone at 5.6m.

Now you get this number 2.4m and split between the consoles... 360 did 1.2m last year so I believe that the drop in 360 shipment was ~30% (based in the 84m yet that hinted to a dropped of 30% in last quarter).... 30% is ~900k from 1.2m... so ~1.5m for Xbone this quarter.

Xbone this quarter: ~7.3m

I can be a bit lower or a bit higher but it is less than 7.6m... or we can start to think 360 shipped close to nothing.

PS. I think for estimate I can use ~7.5m just fine.

That's all MS care/will aim for now tho, even if they say in interviews "We want to win WW" it's all lip service, they know it's an impossible feat now.

Their aims will be to overtake PS4 in the US and UK (no saying that'll be easy but it's within reach) build up their first party and try and claw as much profit in the tail end of the gen and then start all over again.

12.5M for the PS4 is likely to be a fairly accurate sold through figure, not just shipped.

Why would you think it's 30%? The drop in Q1 shipments was over 40%, and the drop YOY increases in Q3 (look at last years drops each Q) compared to Q1/Q2. No way 360 was at 900k when it sold 800k this Q1 (last year Q3 sold les than Q1).

Also, like I said in a previous post, it's likely last Q's 1.1m was 50/50, you're even saying this yourself. That's not a 30% drop that's a 50%~ drop.

Hmm judging by the average YOY decline for 360 shipments, I'd peg Q1 shipments of 360 around 750k or so, which would put Q1 shipments of XB1 around 1.65M and the likely shipped total of XB1 cumulatively around 7.4M. Seems decent although I suppose they launched in a number of new territories so it's not too suprising

NPD Q1 - 270k~, Q3 - 180k~

I'd expect a bit more of a drop over Q1's shipments.

Pretty unexciting numbers, less than 2m XB1s shipped in a quarter with a significant shipment overhead because of the launches in many new markets including Japan which probably got its lifetime shipment ^^''

Ummmmmm you know to close the gap you have to sell more than the PS4 right? And you are thinking 3-4 million more?

There is no way that Microsoft can pull it back. But I sure as hell love the Microsoft that is pulling back consumers. Outside of the Wii U they are delivering the best exclusives for me.

360 shipped over 84m at end of May... the previous Q it was at 83.7m... that means it shipped at least 300k but the word was over so I will use 400k... it had June yet to ship that means at least 500k... my personal estimate is 600k.

But you are right... it dropped 40% and not 30%... 1m to 600k... that means this quarter my personal estimate now is 700k instead 900k.

2.4m - 700k = 1.7m

5.8m + 1.7m = < 7.5m

Well it is in line my first prediction but now it is more at the 7.5m range than 7.3m.

The Jl-Sp shipped # of 2.4 mil combined units along with PS4's great month with Destiny has to be a good sign for the consoles market in general though, right? Even though it's 360 + XB1? Second highest shipped units in last decade essentially behind 2010-11 and crushes most years in that window.

Yeah, thats probably what they'll do but i think its the wrong decision.

If they decide to make another console they can't ignore almost every market, at some point investors will want to see growth and ignoring Europe and Asia could kill the Xbox brand in these countries(for future consoles).
They gained a lot of ground in europe with the 360 and lost almost everything this gen because they just focused on the US and to a lesser extent the UK market.
They need to invest in european markets by making good and diversive games and increase their visibility (Its almost non existent here in Germany in the meantime it feels like sony has a new add every 2 weeks).

Don't disagree with any of your estimates, just at how you arrived at the 360 figure. Personally taking a milestone in the middle of a Q doesn't help to figure out anything.

I still stand by the 50% down and 50/50 last Q, so a similar fashion this Q.

7.5m is a good round figure tho. Defo has to be above WiiU surely?
