I'll get the ball rolling: (BTW, could be claymation, stopmotion, CGI, etc.)

Grave of the Fireflies.

Such a compelling historical piece from start to finish. It's done by Ghibli so even though the animation might look old-school, it's still gorgeous to look at, with lots of attention to little details. It also has a really genuine story. Just incredibly light-hearted, & super uplifting. Captures some tender childhood moments flawlessly. It's like a warm blanket on a cozy, rainy day.

Spirited Away or Grave of Fireflies. Grave of Fireflies is exceptionally good even with older folks who think cartoons are only for kids. I got my parents and in-laws to watch it and they were both blown away.

Patlabor 2 is probably the best animated movie that would fit in this category. Perhaps Honnêamise, too. With the Kon movies... i feel they should not be experienced in isolation.

That said, EoE is still goat.

I think we watched different films

One day I realized that sadness is just another word for not enough coffee.
I couldn't, in good faith, recommend Millennium Actress because I feel most people would miss its nuances unless they were well versed in Kon's directorial style.

It's definitely not a universal message, unlike, say, The Lion King.

Spirited Away and Wall-E are modern classics for sure, but the correct answer is an eighth of mushrooms and Yellow Submarine.

There's better choices than mine, many great classics and modern movies one could choose, but I'd recommend Ghost in the Shell. A rather short, very atmospheric animated sci-fi movie with an incredible soundtrack.
It's one of the few animes I'd actually recommend as a legitimately great movie.
